E D I N B U R G H J O U R N A L O F B O T A N Y 68 (2): 273–296 (2011) 273 Ó Trustees of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (2011) doi:10.1017/S0960428611000102 A FLORISTIC DESCRIPTION OF THE SAN PASTOR SAVANNA, BELIZE, CENTRAL AMERICA J. HICKS1 ,Z.A.GOODWIN1 ,S.G.M.BRIDGEWATER1 ,D.J.HARRIS1 , 2 &P.A.FURLEY3 A vascular plant species list and description is provided for the San Pastor Savanna, an isolated area of savanna within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Belize. Of the 126 species recorded, 28 are new records for the Chiquibul Forest Reserve with one previously unrecorded for the country. The maintenance of the current vegetation classification under the Belize Ecosystems Map for the San Pastor Savanna is supported. The coarse-textured soils are typical for extremely seasonal climates with some evidence of prolonged inundation during wet periods and dry seasons affected by burning. Although clear floristic affinities exist with other local and regional savanna areas, the San Pastor Savanna has some unique features and its flora includes national endemics. Although it is currently protected as part of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve and this status should be maintained, its inaccessible location makes frequent monitoring by the Forest Department problematic. Through providing a source of water and a source of forage for horses, the San Pastor Savanna plays a pivotal role in supporting the illegal Chamaedorea (xate´)palmleafharvestingindustry. This activity has also adversely impacted local wildlife. Like the nearby Mountain Pine Ridge, the San Pastor Savanna has suffered intense pine beetle (Dendroctonus spp.) attack.

  • A New Species of Colletoecema (Rubiaceae) from Southern Cameroon with a Discussion of Relationships Among Basal Rubioideae
BLUMEA 53: 533–547 Published on 31 December 2008 http://dx.doi.org/10.3767/000651908X607495 A NEW SPECIES OF COLLETOECEMA (RUBIACEAE) FROM SOUTHERN CAMEROON WITH A DISCUSSION OF RELATIONSHIPS AMONG BASAL RUBIOIDEAE B. SONKÉ1, S. DESSEIN2, H. TAEDOUMG1, I. GROENINCKX3 & E. ROBBRECHT2 SUMMARY Colletoecema magna, a new species from the Ngovayang Massif (southern Cameroon) is described and illustrated. A comparative morphological study illustrates the similar placentation and fruit anatomy of the novelty and Colletoecema dewevrei, the only other species of the genus. Colletoecema magna essentially differs from C. dewevrei by its sessile flowers and fruits, the corolla tube that is densely hairy above the insertion point of the stamens and the anthers that are included. Further characters that separate the novelty are its larger leaves, more condensed inflorescences, and larger fruits. Its position within Colletoecema is corroborated by atpB-rbcL and rbcL chloroplast sequences. The relationships among the basal lineages of the subfamily Rubioideae, to which Colletoecema belongs, are briefly addressed. Based on our present knowledge, a paleotropical or tropical African origin of the Rubioideae is hypothesized. Key words: Rubioideae, Rubiaceae, Colletoecema, chloroplast DNA, Ngovayang massif. INTRODUCTION Up to now, Colletoecema was known from a single species, i.e. C. dewevrei (De Wild.) E.M.A.Petit, a Guineo-Congolian endemic. The genus was established by Petit (1963) based on ‘Plectronia’ dewevrei (Rubiaceae, Vanguerieae), a species described by De Wildeman (1904). Petit (1963) demonstrated that this species does not belong to the Canthium complex and described a new genus, i.e. Colletoecema. He also showed that the original position in Vanguerieae could not be upheld.

  • High Species Diversity in Fleshy-Fruited Tropical Understory Plants
vol. 157, no. 6 the american naturalist june 2001 High Species Diversity in Fleshy-Fruited Tropical Understory Plants James F. Smith* Department of Biology, Boise State University, Boise, Idaho 83725 increased species diversity is to compare multiple instances in which the trait has evolved. If the trait has resulted in Submitted July 10, 2000; Accepted February 1, 2001 increased species diversity, then clades with the trait should be more diverse than clades lacking the trait. Older clades are more likely to have generated more species; therefore the clades to be compared must be equivalent in age (e.g., abstract: Key innovations may increase the number of taxa in a sister groups). Therefore, accurate phylogenetic assess- clade that possesses the proposed innovation in comparison to its ments are critical in assessing specific characters and their sister group that lacks the trait through either increased speciation effects on species diversity. Recent advancements in phy- or reduced extinction rates. Comparing sister clades across several independent lineages provides statistical support that the trait has logenetic analysis have improved our understanding of increased species diversity. Previous studies have indicated that there evolutionary relationships for many groups, especially may not be a relationship between biotic dispersal and higher species among plants. This improved phylogenetic assessment of diversity, but only a few of these studies specified habit, habitat, or plant relationships has allowed evolutionary biologists to type of disperser. No previous study has specified all of the above examine many traits previously proposed as affecting spe- parameters and used a phylogenetic approach. This article examines cies diversity in a new light.

  • Checklist of the Washington Baltimore Area
Annotated Checklist of the Vascular Plants of the Washington - Baltimore Area Part I Ferns, Fern Allies, Gymnosperms, and Dicotyledons by Stanwyn G. Shetler and Sylvia Stone Orli Department of Botany National Museum of Natural History 2000 Department of Botany, National Museum of Natural History Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC 20560-0166 ii iii PREFACE The better part of a century has elapsed since A. S. Hitchcock and Paul C. Standley published their succinct manual in 1919 for the identification of the vascular flora in the Washington, DC, area. A comparable new manual has long been needed. As with their work, such a manual should be produced through a collaborative effort of the region’s botanists and other experts. The Annotated Checklist is offered as a first step, in the hope that it will spark and facilitate that effort. In preparing this checklist, Shetler has been responsible for the taxonomy and nomenclature and Orli for the database. We have chosen to distribute the first part in preliminary form, so that it can be used, criticized, and revised while it is current and the second part (Monocotyledons) is still in progress. Additions, corrections, and comments are welcome. We hope that our checklist will stimulate a new wave of fieldwork to check on the current status of the local flora relative to what is reported here. When Part II is finished, the two parts will be combined into a single publication. We also maintain a Web site for the Flora of the Washington-Baltimore Area, and the database can be searched there (http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/dcflora).
