One might expect music to be a relevant aspect of such works, yet it is hardly addressed, resulting in a dearth of independent and comprehensive assessments of Ethiopian music scholarship; a rare exception is the 3 volume Ethiopian Chris- tian Liturgical Chant: An Anthology edited by Kay Kaufman Shelemay and Peter Jeffery (1993–1997). Generally speaking, music is one of the most neglected themes in Ethiopian studies, especially as compared to the dominant subjects of history and linguistics. Although some progress in musical studies has recently developed, the existing scholarly literature remains confi ned to limited themes. Beside inadequate attention to various topics there are problems of misconceptions and lack of reciprocity in contemporary scholarship. This paper outlines the evolution of Ethiopian music scholarship and exposes general trends in the exist- ing body of knowledge by using critical works from a variety of disciplines. -

The modern music of Ethiopia has been blended with combination of elements from traditional Ethiopian music and western music which has created a new trend in the music world. -

Missal with Anaphoras and Litanies In Ge’ez and Amharic, decorated manuscript on parchment with musical notation Ethiopia, c. 1850 116 folios on parchment, complete, mostly in numbered gatherings of 8 leaves, ruling and prickings visible throughout, written in black ink in two columns of twenty-two to twenty-four lines in at least two sizes of script (usually 3-4 mm., but 2 mm on ff.109-112) in a number of 19th-century riiqiq hands, with the usual rubrics including opening lines of sections, instructions for the performance of the Mass, and some cantillations, many of the texts include interlinear cantillations or musical notation, with a small number of single• column head-ornaments or hariigs and one large, full-page hariig, f. 1, in red, green and yellow, edges of a number of leaves have been trimmed, and some are repaired, slight staining and traces of rodent damage to some leaves, one leaf is loose. Bound between its original plain wooden boards. Dimensions 185 x 245 mm. Ethiopian manuscripts are remarkable products of a living scribal culture that has survived from the fourth century until today. Their bindings often preserve structures similar to early Christian books from the fourth to the seventh centuries; their tradition of liturgical music is a living example of a system transmitted through oral teaching, with some use of notation. Noteworthy features of this Missal are the musical notation or cantillation marks (melekket or “signs”), two diagrams, and a colorful frontispiece. PROVENANCE 1. There is no colophon giving a precise date of completion; a note on f.108v indicates that the principal text was finished on Tahsas 22nd (December 31st or January 1st), but the year is not mentioned. -

Fisher* In this paper I describe my experience as one of the early members of the Haile Selassie I University (H.S.I.U.), Law Faculty, and share my reflections on developments in the ensuing years. Shortly after graduating from law school, I accepted a Fellowship to work for the government of Tanzania for one year, starting in September 1963. My law school classmate, Steven Lowenstein,' invited me to apply for a teaching post at the newly founded Haile Selassie I University Law School (H.S.I.U.), which was funded by the Ford Foundation.2 Lowenstein was one of the pioneer faculty. In December, 1963 I flew to Addis Ababa for an interview with Dean Paul and faculty members. -

Based on extensive ethnographic research in Ethiopia between 2015 and 2017, this project examines the ways in which repatriated Rastafari use music to transform their Promised Land into a reality amidst various challenges. Since they are denied legal citizenship, Rastafari deploy reggae in creative and strategic ways to gain cultural citizenship and recognition in Ethiopia. This research examines how reggae music operates as a productive mechanism, that is, how human actors use music to produce social and tangible phenomena in the world. Combining theories on music’s productive capabilities with Rastafari ideologies on word-sound, this research further seeks to provide deeper insight into the ways Rastafari effect change through performative arts. I examine how Rastafari mobilize particular discourses that both challenge and reproduce hegemonic systems, creating space for themselves in Ethiopia through music. Rastafari use reggae in strategic ways to insert themselves into the contested national narratives of Ethiopia, and participate in the practice of space-making in Addis Ababa and Shashemene through sound projects. -

INTRODUCTION Certainly, it is a mistake to assume that infl uential works from the foreign scholars marked the beginning of musical research in Ethiopia, discounting the inquiries by Ethiopians into their musical traditions. -
