One might expect music to be a relevant aspect of such works, yet it is hardly addressed, resulting in a dearth of independent and comprehensive assessments of Ethiopian music scholarship; a rare exception is the 3 volume Ethiopian Chris- tian Liturgical Chant: An Anthology edited by Kay Kaufman Shelemay and Peter Jeffery (1993–1997). Generally speaking, music is one of the most neglected themes in Ethiopian studies, especially as compared to the dominant subjects of history and linguistics. Although some progress in musical studies has recently developed, the existing scholarly literature remains confi ned to limited themes. Beside inadequate attention to various topics there are problems of misconceptions and lack of reciprocity in contemporary scholarship. This paper outlines the evolution of Ethiopian music scholarship and exposes general trends in the exist- ing body of knowledge by using critical works from a variety of disciplines. -

213 Conversations with an ethnomusicologist and Cardinal Paulos Tzadua 1972-2000 Cynthia Tse Kimberlin Music Research Institute,USA [email protected] Abstract On February 24, 1977, Paulos Tzadua became Archbishop of Addis Ababa, in the midst of the horrors of the Red Terror. His compassionate and caring leadership of Ethiopia’s Catholic Church earned him the notice of Pope John Paul II who named him a Cardinal on May 25, 1985. As the first cardinal from Ethiopia in history, “his elevation raised his profile giving him the added stature and authority in dealing with Ethiopia’s Marxist leaders on numerous issues, including the church’s efforts to relieve suffering caused by famine. (San Francisco Chronicle, 26 May1985) 1. Introduction I first met Abba Paulos in April of 1972 as a US Fulbright scholar conducting a year of fieldwork in Ethiopia. At the time my husband, daughter, and I were living in a rented house located in Addis Ababa just up the street from Ras Mackonnen Bridge. We wished to enroll our daughter at a catholic school and also wanted to record an Ethiopian orthodox church service since Easter was soon to be commemorated. Aleqa Berhanu Mekonnen who teaches zema at the Haile Selassie University (HSU) Theological School suggested recording an all night service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral and that the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) should write a letter of permission on my behalf.1 Berhanu and I went to the church to introduce myself and to ask if I could record the all night service on Sunday April 2nd. -

The Year 1920 (68) Summary: On March 4, Examinations for Classical Honour Moderations began for Jack and lasted for eight days, and on March 31 he learned that he had earned First Class Honours. On March 9, the Martlets had dinner in the J.C.R. with the Pembroke College Cambridge Martlets and the University College Oxford Martlets. Then they returned to Mr. Long’s rooms for their joint meeting over which Jack presided. On March 31, Jack earned First Class Honours in Classical Honour Moderations, and later in the year he began Greats. The Government of Ireland Act 1920 was passed by the British Parliament in this year, dividing Ireland into two countries—Northern Ireland and Ireland. In this year or a later year shortly after 1920, Jack wrote the poems “Oh That a Black Ship,” “Heart-breaking School,” “And After This They Sent Me to Another Place,” and “Old Kirk, Like Father Time Himself.”1 January 1920 January 12 Monday. Jack writes to Leo Baker from Little Lea about his lack of privacy, Baker’s health, and H. E. Monro’s refusal to publish the poems Jack sent him, encouraging Baker to come to Oxford next term so Jack can become his disciple in mysticism. January 14 Wednesday. Hilary Term begins. January 15 Thursday. Around this time Warren completes his visit to his father and Little Lea. Warren gets his orders, reports to Salisbury Southern Command, and is sent to Devonport to work with the Horse Transport, commanded by Vale, as Barracks Officer before taking a course at Aldershot. -

For many in the region, particularly in Palestine, the age of colonialism never ended, but some intellectuals in Europe and America have welcomed a new age of muscular imperialism. Niall Ferguson, for whom the principal lament of today’s neo-imperialism is that Winston Churchill can no longer lead its charge and Rudyard Kipling can no longer sing its praises, writes widely from his endowed Harvard chair. Many glib commentators like to blame all the problems of the Middle East today on British and French imperial maneuvers to fashion dependencies out of the lost provinces of the Ottoman Empire—as if malicious European diplomats somehow invented the ancient !ssures between Shiites and Sunnis, or willfully encouraged Jewish settlers to colonize Palestine.1 European diplomats of the interwar Middle East may not have been malicious, but widespread ignorance, short-sighted incompetence, and self-delusion certainly bequeathed a miserable inheritance to the post- colonial era. Colonial authorities zealously exploited and deepened sectarian and class cleavages in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Palestine. More than encouraging Jewish colonization, British politicians quite literally deeded Palestine to Europe’s Zionist movement, and in so doing gave the world the Arab-Israeli con"ict. In the Middle East, endless su#ering and misery are widely viewed as the colonial legacy of the twentieth century. -
