The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF THE HOLY FATHER POPE FRANCIS TO HIS HOLINESS POPE TAWADROS II, POPE OF ALEXANDRIA AND PATRIARCH OF THE SEE OF ST. MARK, HEAD OF THE COPTIC ORTHODOX CHURCH OF EGYPT Friday, 10 May 2013 Χριστός ανέστη Your Holiness, Dear Brothers in Christ, For me it is a great joy and a truly graced moment to be able to receive all of you here, at the tomb of Saint Peter, as we recall that historic meeting forty years ago between our predecessors, Pope Paul VI and the late Pope Shenouda III, in an embrace of peace and fraternity, after centuries in which there was a certain distance between us. So it is with deep affection that I welcome Your Holiness and the distinguished members of your delegation, and I thank you for your words. Through you, I extend my cordial greetings in the Lord to the bishops, the clergy, the monks and the whole Coptic Orthodox Church. Today’s visit strengthens the bonds of friendship and brotherhood that already exist between the See of Peter and the See of Mark, heir to an inestimable heritage of martyrs, theologians, holy monks and faithful disciples of Christ, who have borne witness to the Gospel from generation to generation, often in situations of great adversity. Forty years ago the Common Declaration of our predecessors represented a milestone on the ecumenical journey, and from it emerged a Commission for Theological Dialogue between our Churches, which has yielded good results and has prepared the ground for a broader dialogue between the Catholic Church and the entire family of Oriental Orthodox Churches, a dialogue that continues to bear fruit to this day. -

Pope Francis
Weekday Homilies of Pope Francis December 1 to 15, 2013 ….at the Chapel of Casa di Santa Martha at 7 a.m. Christmas is an encounter, not just a memory “Preparing for Christmas through prayer, charity and exhaltation”. With this hope, Pope Francis called on the faithful Monday, December 2, to open their hearts and allow themselves to encounter the Lord who renews all. In his homily, Pope Francis recalled that as “we proceed towards Christmas, we embark on a journey of faith and prayer in preparation for our encounter with the Lord, because, Christmas isn’t just a temporal celebration or the memory of a beautiful (event).” "Christmas is an encounter! It's a journey to encounter Him, to find Him through our hearts and our lives, to find the living God and to find Him through faith. It's not easy to live with faith. In today's Gospel, the Lord marvelled at the centurion. He marvelled at his faith. The centurion made a journey to meet the Lord, but he made it in faith. He not only encountered the Lord, but he came to know the joy of being encountered by him. And this is precisely the sort of encounter we desire, the encounter of faith. To encounter the Lord, but also to allow ourselves to be encountered by him. This is very important”. And to actually have an encounter with Jesus, one must pray more, increase charity and treat others with love and joy. “Christmas is something more, Christmas is an encounter with the Lord. And as we make our way towards Him, we must go with open heart and faith, even though this is not always easy. -
A Turbulent Year for Ukraine Urbulent Was the Way to Describe 2009 for Ukraine, Which Plunged Into Financial Crisis
No. 3 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, JANUARY 17, 2010 5 2009: THE YEAR IN REVIEW A turbulent year for Ukraine urbulent was the way to describe 2009 for Ukraine, which plunged into financial crisis. No other European country suffered as much as TUkraine, whose currency was devalued by more than 60 percent since its peak of 4.95 hrv per $1 in August 2008. In addition, the country’s industrial production fell by 31 percent in 2009. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko con- fronted the challenge of minimizing the crisis fallout, while at the same time campaigning for the 2010 presi- dential elections. Her critics attacked her for pursuing populist policies, such as increasing wages and hiring more government staff, when the state treasury was broke as early as the spring. Ms. Tymoshenko herself admitted that her gov- ernment would not have been able to make all its pay- ments without the help of three tranches of loans, worth approximately $10.6 billion, provided by the International Monetary Fund. Her critics believe that instead of borrowing money, Ms. Tymoshenko should have been introducing radical reforms to the Ukrainian economy, reducing government waste, eliminating out- dated Soviet-era benefits and trimming the bureaucracy. The year began with what is becoming an annual tra- Offi cial Website of Ukraine’s President dition in Ukraine – a natural gas conflict provoked by the government of Russian Federation Prime Minister President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the heated February 10 meeting of Vladimir Putin. The confirmations came a day after a raucous inaugural session of the newly elected Parliament in which the oppo- sition forces – rejuvenated by the young radicals of the Svoboda nationalist party – brawled against the ongoing rule-breaking and alleged bribery of the Party of Regions. The violence confirmed the predictions of political observers that this seventh convocation of Ukraine’s Parliament would be mired in conflict as a result of the Mariana Karapinka via RISU radicalization of society under the corrupt rule of the Party Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk with Bishop Borys Gudziak during his enthronement ceremony in Paris of Regions of Ukraine. at Notre Dame Cathedral. “The radical methods of the opposition, particularly Svoboda, emerged not because people who want to fight have gathered in the opposition. RON ROBERSON SEIA NEWSLETTER On the Eastern Churches and Ecumenism Number 271: April 30, 2018 Washington, DC The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Considers Requests for Ukrainian Autocephaly PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE PETRO POROSHENKO ON TUESDAY, APRIL 17, ANNOUNCED THE START OF THE PROCEDURE FOR THE CREATION OF A UNIFIED UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH. The relevant agreement was reached at 7-hour long negotiations between Poroshenko and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Synod members held during a presidential visit to Turkey, Poroshenko said at a meeting with heads of parliamentary factions on Tuesday. "Ukraine is as close as ever to the emergence of its own Unified Orthodox Church," the president said, adding that he cannot elaborate on all details of the agreements reached. A number of elements are needed for the process to see success, including, a corresponding appeal from UOC of the Kyiv Patriarchate and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which has already been signed to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in a rare united move of the two churches, according to Poroshenko. Poroshenko expressed hope that the new UOC would be created before the 1030th anniversary of baptism of the Kyiv Rus and called on Parliament to support the appeal to Constantinople. The president called the developments around a possible creation of a United Orthodox Church which would not be subordinate to Moscow a "historic event." The president ruled out the possibility of banning any other churches in Ukraine and noted that the state will remain separated from church. – Unian, April 17.
