Un bilancio storiografico . 555Ð566 Circolo Medievistico Romano ........... 567Ð569 Anzeigen und Besprechungen ........... 570Ð808 QFIAB 85 (2005) DEUTSCHES HISTORISCHES INSTITUT IN ROM Jahresbericht 2004 Die Aufnahme neuer, zeitlich befristeter Projekte, sowie reiche Erträge historischer Grundlagenforschung haben das Forschungspro- fil des DHI Rom im Jahr 2004 gestärkt. Sechs Text- und Indicesbände wurden in der Reihe des Repertorium Germanicum vorgelegt. Die noch fehlende Teiledition von Bertalots Initia Humanistica Latina ist ebenso erschienen wie der abschließende Band des Codex Diplomati- cus Amiatinus sowie eine weitere Publikation in der Reihe der Nuntia- turberichte aus Deutschland. Im Rahmen eines Drittmittelprojektes konnten die Arbeiten an einer kritischen Edition der Summa Trium Librorum des Rolandus de Luca in Angriff genommen werden, eines Textes, der für die Entwicklung der europäischen Rechtskultur im Mittelalter von besonderem Interesse ist. Mit der Edition der Tagebü- cher 1938 bis 1940 von Luca Pietromarchi wurde ein Projekt begon- nen, das eine wichtige Quelle zum italienischen Faschismus sowie zur faschistischen Außenpolitik erschließt. Verstärkt wurden im Jahr 2004 in die wissenschaftliche Arbeit des DHI neue Medien und Techniken einbezogen. Sie dienen sowohl wissenschaftlichen Projekten als auch einer verbesserten Außendar- stellung der Institutsarbeit, der auch ein neues Institutslogo dienlich sein soll. Die Arbeit an Onlinepublikationen wurde ebenso intensiviert wie die Vorbereitung eines Relaunchs der Homepage des Instituts. Der Jahressitzung des wissenschaftlichen Beirates war in die- sem Jahr am 19. und 20. 2. eine Tagung unter dem Titel „Forschungs- stand und Perspektiven der deutschen Mediävistik“ vorgeschaltet. Führende Vertreter des Faches erläuterten an zentralen Themenfel- dern aktuelle Methoden und Fragestellungen, und skizzierten Mög- lichkeiten künftiger Forschungsschwerpunkte in komparatistischer Perspektive. Zum ersten Mal organisierten das Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo und das DHI Rom eine derartige gemeinsame Veran- QFIAB 85 (2005) X JAHRESBERICHT 2004 staltung, die in die Räume beider Einrichtungen zahlreiche Interessen- ten lockte und deutlich werden ließ, welches Bedürfnis nach Aus- tausch zwischen deutscher und italienischer Mediävistik besteht. Der Tagungsband in italienischer Sprache wird vorbereitet. Einen Höhe- punkt stellte am 20. 2. die Abendveranstaltung im gefüllten Vortrags- saal des DHI dar. In seinem Vortrag betonte der frühere langjährige Vorsitzende des wissenschaftlichen Beirats des Instituts, Prof. Rudolf Schieffer, ganz im Sinne von zentralen Aufgaben der Institutsarbeit, die Bedeutung editorischer Arbeiten und skizzierte zugleich neuere Entwicklungen bei der Erschließung von Quellen. Zur Beiratssitzung am 21. 2. traten zusammen die Mitglieder Proff. Christof Dipper (Vor- sitz), Silke Leopold, Volker Reinhardt, Ludwig Schmugge, Volker Sel- lin, Stefan Weinfurter, Hubert Wolf, der amtierende Institutsdirektor Prof. Michael Matheus sowie sein Stellvertreter, Dr. Alexander Koller, der ehemalige Institutsdirektor Prof. Arnold Esch, der Vorsitzende des Stiftungsrates der Stiftung Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche In- stitute im Ausland (D.G.I.A.), Prof. Wolfgang Schieder, als Vertreter der wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter Dr. Sabine Ehrmann-Herfort und Dr. Thomas Schlemmer, für den Personalrat Dr. Guido Braun sowie als Gäste die Direktoren der Institute in London und Warschau, Proff. Hagen Schulze und Klaus Ziemer. Zum neuen Vorsitzenden des wis- senschaftlichen Beirats wurde gewählt: Prof. Ludwig Schmugge, zu seinem Stellvertreter Prof. Volker Sellin. Als neue Mitglieder des wis- senschaftlichen Beirats wurden vorgeschlagen Frau Prof. Claudia Märtl sowie Prof. Peter Hertner. Die Vorschläge hat der Stiftungsrat in seiner Sitzung am 29. 3. bestätigt. Während der Beiratssitzung wurden einzelne Forschungspro- jekte vorgestellt und diskutiert; schon im Vorfeld der Sitzung bestand Gelegenheit für die Beiratsmitglieder mit den wissenschaftlichen Mit- arbeitern des Instituts deren Projekte zu erörtern, ein zentrales Anlie- gen der jährlichen Treffen in Rom. Die Zahl der durchgeführten Veranstaltungen wuchs weiter an, erreichte freilich die Grenze der organisatorischen Möglichkeiten, auch wenn dank zahlreicher Kooperationen (weit über die Stiftung D.G.I.A. hinaus) Synergieeffekte erzielt werden konnten. Die geplan- ten Bauvorhaben werden in den Jahren 2005 und 2006 eine größere Zurückhaltung in diesem Sektor erzwingen. In my thesis, I shall assess the arguments on both sides in terms of the available evidence. Its aim is to demonstrate how the Catholic Church, its hierarchy and its priests acted as relevant patriots who did not hesitate to stand up to the occupying forces and express their rejection of their procedures. Both the domestic Catholic camp and the ties abroad towards the Holy See and its representation will be analysed. There will also be presented the personalities of priests, who became the victims of the Nazi rampage in the Czech lands at the end of the study. The basic method consists of a descriptive analysis that takes into account the comparative approach of the spiritual life before and after the occupation. Furthermore, the analytical-synthetic method will be used, combined with the subsequent interpretation of the findings. An additional method, not always easy to apply, is hermeneutics, i.e., the interpretation of socio-historical phenomena in an effort to reveal the uniqueness of the analysed texts and sources and emphasize their singularity in the cultural and spiritual development of Czech Church history in the first half of the 20th century.

State Diplomacy and Church Diplomacy by Monsignor Francesco Follo Introduction The title and content of this contribution refers to various texts, the most recent of which are two conferences delivered respectively on November 15th, 2019 by H.E. Mgr. Paul Richard Gallagher Secretary for Relations with States, and on November 28th, 2019 by H.E. Card. Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of His Holiness. Obviously, the prolusions of these high prelates helped me to formulate and - above all - to clarify my presentation of Vatican diplomacy, taking into account its history and its specificity. Actually, if all diplomacy works for peace, that of the Holy Father and his close contributors excludes a priori war as an extreme form of diplomacy and is always inspired by transcendent, religious values. In this regard, on November 15th 2019, in the conference entitled “Diplomacy of Values and Development”, H.E. Mons. Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States, affirmed that the Holy See's diplomacy is «essentially aimed at pursuing the “values” that are proper to the Christian Revelation and that coincide with the deepest aspirations of Justice, Truth and Peace, which, although historically declined and with a variety of forms through the ecclesial Magisterium, are in their essence common to the man of every place, time and social extraction». The Eminent Archbishop then clarified that the relationship with values is at first sight something foreign to the common notion of diplomacy, as a science and art of the conduct of international relations. Diplomacy is at the service of the government of the State and pursues its ends: it is pure method that does not look at values.

(= Veröffentlichungen der Kommission für Zeitgeschichte, Reihe B: Forschungen, Bd. 109) The present volume originated in a Giornate di Studi organized by the publisher at the German Historical Institute in Rome on 17 June 2004. Under the title »The End of Political Catholicism in Germany in 1933 and the Holy See: Enabling Law, Reich Concordat and Dissolution of the Center Party,« the participants were called upon to debate the »state of research, scholarly perspectives, and new sources 25 years after the Scholder-Repgen controversy.« 1 The immediate catalyst for reexamining these questions of the Center Party’s demise and the beginnings of the Reich Concordat, questions that had long been quiescent, was the opening of files pertaining to Germany from the papacy of Pius XI (1922–1939) by the Vatican Secret Archive in February 2003. An important collection of sources from one of the main historical actors, The Holy See – to which only selected individuals had previously been given access – was now open to the wider scholarly community. That alone would have been reason enough to ask both established and younger scholars of recent church history whether they expected the newly opened Vatican files to shed new light on the »question of the Reich Concordat« or had perhaps already gained new understanding as a result of their work with these sources. The fact that around the same time other important archives and collections were made accessible, or were being prepared for opening, provided further impetus for a scholarly »stock-taking.« In late 2002, the archive of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising made available the papers of Archbishop Michael Cardinal Faulhaber.
