A magyar államiság és keresz- tény egyházszervezet kialakításával párhuzamosan a településen lelki és közigazgatási központ – monostor és hiteleshely – működött. A Szent Fülöp-monostor a tizenharmadik század végi kun háborúk során ugyan elenyészett, de a szőregi plébániatemplom egészen a török időkig – a tizenhatodik századig – fönnállt. A tizennyolcadik században Szőreg a Temesi Bánság része volt, s ortodox vallású szerbekkel népesítették be, majd 1746-ban önálló községgé nyilvánították. A falu copf klasszicista stílusú szerb temploma 1779 és 1785 között épült. A szőregi uradalmat 1783 márciusában (1781-től kezdődően) bérbe vette Szeged szabad királyi város, amely jogvi- szony egészen 1831-ig tartott. Szőreg 1778-tól 1918-ig Torontál vármegye törökkanizsai járásához tartozott. A szer- bek és magyarok közötti konfliktusok a faluban is jelentkeztek 1848/49-ben, amikor is a településen több jelentős hadi esemény történt. 1918 novemberétől 1921 augusztusáig szerb megszállás alatt állt a település. 1921-től Csanád–Arad–Torontál közigazgatásilag egyelőre egyesített vármegye egyik községe volt. Az 1920-as években a helyi szerb la- kosság jelentős része átköltözött a Szerb–Horvát–Szlovén Királyság területére (optált). Szőreg 1950-től az akkor új területtel megszervezett Csongrád megye községe, 1973-tól pedig Szeged város egyik városrésze. A szőregi templom történetét összefoglaló munkámhoz a legtöbb adatot a Szőreg és népe (1977) című tanulmánykötet mellett Péter László Az ezeréves Szőreg (2001), valamint Kisházi-Kovács László A városi kegyuraság Szegeden (a kezdetektől 1950-ig) (2006) című könyvében találtam. Tanulmányom elsődleges forrásai a Szeged-Csanádi Püspöki Levéltárban őrzött dokumentumok voltak. A levéltári anyaggyűjtésben pótol- hatatlan és önzetlen segítséget nyújtott Szaplonczay Miklósné levéltárvezető és Tóth Ta- más történeti kutató. Ezúton is köszönöm nekik! SZENT FÜLÖP ÉS SZENT Katalin oltalmában Szőregen a középkorban több jelentős egyházi intézmény működött. Egyrészt a ti- zenegyedik századtól volt a településen egy monostor, másrészt – az előbbi pusztulása után – Szőreg népét plébániatemplom is szolgálta. A szőregi monostor a katolikus bencés 6 Miklós Péter vagy a keleti ortodox bazilita közösségé lehetett. Karácsonyi Péter a Szőreg és népe című kötetben megjelent tanulmányában az utóbbi monasztikus rend mellett tette le a voksát. Mivel közvetett források nem szólnak erről, föltételezéseit közvetett bizonyítékokra ala- pozta.1 Az bizonyos, hogy Szőreg a középkorban közvetlenül a Maros mellett helyezkedett el. A monostor és a falu az egyik fontos dél-alföldi állomása volt az Erdélyből nyugatra és délnyugtra áramló sószállításnak. A település lakói pákászó és halászó életmódot foly- tattak. A szőregi monostor két apátjának nevét ismerjük: Jácint egy 1239-es oklevélben szerepel, míg Leontiust egy 1247-es dokumentum említi. A szőregi Szent Fülöp-monos- tor az 1233-as beregi egyezmény szövegében is előfordul: II. András király évente ezer kő sót rendelt ki számára. A szőregi plébános – Ágoston (Augustinus) – az 1333-as pápai tizedjegyzékben szerepelt, mindössze egy garast fizetett. Ebből arra következtethetünk, hogy a szőregi plébánia alacsony jövedelmű intézmény volt a tizennegyedik században. A monostor akkorra már nem működött, azt ugyanis a kunok kifosztották és lerombolták az 1280-as évek elején.2 A középkori szőregiek védőszentje tehát Szent Fülöp apostol volt, Jézus tizenkét ta- nítványának egyike. Márk, Máté és Lukács evangéliumában csak az apostolok fölsoro- lásakor szerepel a neve, János evangélista ír róla bővebben. Fülöp az utolsó vacsorán a következő kéréssel fordult mesteréhez: „Uram, mutasd meg nekünk az Atyát és az elég nekünk.” Jézus halála és föltámadása után a görögök körében térített. Frígia fővárosában, Hieropoliszban hunyt el 80 körül. Az ősi keresztény hagyomány szerint Szent Fülöpöt Krisztushite miatt feszítették ke- resztre nyolcvanhét éves korában, míg Alexandriai Szent Kelemen egyházatya úgy vélte, természetes halállal hunyt el idős korában. Mivel alakja nem a történelmi szerepe, hanem az apostolként betöltött funkciója miatt maradt fönn, keveset tudunk róla. Ami biztos: többek között a posztóföldolgozók és a kalapkészítők közösségének védőszentje. Fülöp Szent Jakab apostollal közös május elejei ünnepe a tavasz beköszöntének vi- dám napja is volt, ami sok helyen májusfa állításával ültek meg. A nagyszerű szegedi néprajztudósnál, Bálint Sándornál olvashatjuk, hogy a Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok megyei „Nagykörű jámbor öregasszonyai a század elején úgy beszélték, hogy a májfa azokra az időkre emlékeztet, amikor a hetvenkét tanítvány tanítani járt. Volt köztük egy szentéletű lány is, de mégsem hitték el róla, hogy ártatlan tőlük. Mint mondogatták az emberek: el- hiszik, ha a földbe szúrt száraz fa reggelre kizöldül. A fa azonban május hajnalára kihaj- tott.” A kiváló pap és folklorista Kálmány Lajos szőregi segédlelkész korában jegyezte föl, hogy a fülfájáson segít a Szent Fülöp és Jakab napján köpült vaj.3 Szőreg középkori

    The Greek-Catholic Discourse of Identity in the Inter-War Period: The Relation between the Nation and People’s Religious Confession Ciprian Ghişa ”Babeş-Bolyai” University Abstract: The Greek-Catholic Discourse of Identity in the Inter-War Period: The Relation between the Nation and People’s Religious Confession. This paper aims to analyze the question of the confessional identity, focusing on one of its main constitutive elements: the relation between the nation and people’s religious confession. The national identity and the confessional one have numerous common characteristics, influencing each other more or less depending on the historical evolution of events. These aspects are more profound in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-confessional environment, as otherness is one of the strongest factors that defines and strengthens the confessional as well as the national identity. This was also the case of the Greek- Catholic Church in Romania, in the inter-war period, taking into consideration its new status after the Union of 1918: a minority church in a country with an Orthodox majority. Its relation of otherness with the Romanian Orthodox Church also influenced its relation with the state and therefore it determined also the structure and the intensity of its discourse of identity. Among the most important themes of this discourse we can mention: the Greek-Catholic Church is the church of the forefathers; this Church, its faith and its believers are Romanian; the Union with Rome brought the Romanian people a lot of benefices

    Episcopul Alexandru Rusu şi regimul comunist (1945 – 1963) La sfârşitul celui de al doilea război mondial, situaţia geopolitică din Europa Central Răsăriteană a generat în ţările intrate în sfera de influenţă sovietică schimbări de structură şi fond cu implicaţii profunde asupra vieţii politice, economice, sociale şi religioase. În România, instaurarea guvernului Groza, la 6 martie 1945, a avut drept consecinţă subordonarea treptată a instituţiilor statului, şi în cele din urmă a societăţi în ansamblul ei, puterii comuniste. În aceste condiţii, biserica nu putea să rămână în afara procesului de comunizare a societăţii româneşti, iar complexitatea demografiei confesionale impunea atitudini diferenţiate pentru fiecare comunitate religioasă, care a evoluat în funcţie de „disponibilitatea” acestora spre cooperare cu puterea laică. Biserica Catolică a reprezentat pentru regimul comunist o problemă importantă, întrucât avea o structură centralizată, subordonată, atât din punct de vedere spiritual, cât şi canonic, Sfântului Scaun, considerat de comunişti drept un „centru al reacţiunii internaţionale”.1 În cazul credincioşilor romano-catolici, majoritatea de etnie maghiară, regimul a urmărit înlocuirea controlului de la Vatican cu cel de la Bucureşti, deoarece încercarea de lichidare putea fi interpretată ca o acţiune îndreptată împotriva minorităţii maghiare. În aceste condiţii, cultul romano-catolic a avut de-a lungul perioadei comuniste un statut de biserică tolerată, dar nerecunoscută oficial, în care statul nu a putut să-şi impună propria autoritate.2 În cazul Bisericii Greco-Catolice3, măsurile guvernului comunist în problema religioasă exprimau foarte clar că ierarhii erau puşi în situaţia de a alege colaborarea cu noul regim sau suprimarea. De altfel, situaţia Bisericii Greco-Catolice se încadrează, începând din anul 1948, în contextul general al relaţiilor dintre Moscova şi Vatican, iar în plan intern, în cadrul raporturilor dintre regimul comunist aflat la putere şi o biserică făţiş 1 Cristian Vasile, Între Vatican şi Kremlin.

    Martyred Romanian bishops fought communist regime The memory and witness of Romania’s martyred bishops are a reminder that Christians are called to stand firm against ideologies that seek to stifle and suppress their cultural and religious traditions, Pope Francis said. On the last leg of his visit to Romania, the pope June 2 celebrated a Divine Liturgy during which seven Eastern-rite Catholic bishops, who died during a fierce anti-religious campaign waged by the communist regime in Romania, were beatified. “These pastors, martyrs for the faith, re-appropriated and handed down to the Romanian people a precious legacy that we can sum up in two words: freedom and mercy,” the pope said. According to the Vatican, an estimated 60,000 people filled Blaj’s Liberty Field, while some 20,000 people followed the liturgy on big screens set up in various squares around the city. For Eastern Catholics in Romania, the field – located on the grounds of Blaj’s Greek Catholic Theological Seminary – is both a symbol of national pride and sorrow. It was in Liberty Field where, during the 100th anniversary of the Romanian nationalist revolution that communist authorities formerly dissolved the Eastern-rite Romanian Catholic Church. One of the newly beatified bishops, Bishop Ioan Suciu, the apostolic administrator of Fagaras and Alba Iulia, refused to appear at the event, which was perceived by his flock as a sign that they were called to remain steadfast in their faith and follow the path of persecution and martyrdom. Thirty years after the fall of communism, the sun shined brightly and solemn hymns echoed over the field that was once the site of the Eastern Catholic Church’s darkest period.

Vacanța la mare o demonstrează deplin. Și numărul de infectări crește zilnic. Încercarea prin care trecem, de data aceasta, este de lungă durată și comportamentul nostru devine adesea problematic. În momentele noastre mai grele, să ne amintim de sfatul ce ni-l dă Sf. Josemaria Escriva: ,,Reculege-te…Caută-L pe Dumnezeu în tine și ascultă-L”. Dacă l-ai găsit, ascultă-i cuvântul: ,,Poruncă nouă vă dau vouă: să vă iubiți unii pe alții. Întru aceasta vor cunoaște că sunteți ucenicii mei”.
