FINAL REPORT International Commission on the Holocaust In
FINAL REPORT of the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania Presented to Romanian President Ion Iliescu November 11, 2004 Bucharest, Romania NOTE: The English text of this Report is currently in preparation for publication. © International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania. All rights reserved. DISTORTION, NEGATIONISM, AND MINIMALIZATION OF THE HOLOCAUST IN POSTWAR ROMANIA Introduction This chapter reviews and analyzes the different forms of Holocaust distortion, denial, and minimalization in post-World War II Romania. It must be emphasized from the start that the analysis is based on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s definition of the Holocaust, which Commission members accepted as authoritative soon after the Commission was established. This definition1 does not leave room for doubt about the state-organized participation of Romania in the genocide against the Jews, since during the Second World War, Romania was among those allies and a collaborators of Nazi Germany that had a systematic plan for the persecution and annihilation of the Jewish population living on territories under their unmitigated control. In Romania’s specific case, an additional “target-population” subjected to or destined for genocide was the Romany minority. This chapter will employ an adequate conceptualization, using both updated recent studies on the Holocaust in general and new interpretations concerning this genocide in particular. Insofar as the employed conceptualization is concerned, two terminological clarifications are in order. First, “distortion” refers to attempts to use historical research on the dimensions and significance of the Holocaust either to diminish its significance or to serve political and propagandistic purposes. Although its use is not strictly confined to the Communist era, the term “distortion” is generally employed in reference to that period, during which historical research was completely subjected to controls by the Communist Party’s political censorship. -

PONTIFICAL DIPLOMACY. THE HOLY SEE AND THE COMUNIST COUNTRIES IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE* PhD Fr. The Roman-Catholic Church is the only religious institution1 that can enter into diplomatic relations and that interests itself in international law, acting through the Holy See, an international sovereign subject of singular characteristics. In other words, the subject who interacts with other actors2 of international life is the Holy See3, not the Catholic Church as a community of believers and neither4 the Vatican City State. The Holy See is the Holy Father himself inasmuch as he is an independ- ent, universal, spiritual authority, together with the organizations of the Roman Curia that collaborate with his mission. The Holy See thus requires the existence of a genuine public international status, such as given by the definition of subject sui iuris5, meaning the Holy See defines for itself its juridical organization and does not receive it from outside, and as such, * Paper presented at the International Symposium “The role of the Roman-Catholic Church in Eastern Europe in the fall of communism”, scientific event organized by the “Saint Joseph” Roman-Catholic Theological Institute in Iasi, the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iasi, the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome and the State University in the Republic of Moldova, Iaşi, May 8, 2014. -
The Holy See
The Holy See LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI TO H.E. MSGR. IOAN ROBU, METROPOLITAN ARCHBISHOP OF BUCHAREST ON THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VISIT OF THE SERVANT OF GOD JOHN PAUL II TO ROMANIA (MAY 7-9, 1999) To my Venerable Brother Metropolitan Archbishop Ioan Robu of Bucharest I rejoiced to learn that the Roman Catholic Church in Romania, the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Romanian State have wished to commemorate together the 10th anniversary of the memorable Visit to Romania of the Servant of God John Paul II who went there determined "to strengthen those ties between Romania and the Holy See which were so important for the history of Christianity in the region" (Arrival Ceremony, Baneasa Airport, Bucharest, 7 May 1999), and to "pay homage to the Romanian people and to their Christian roots" (General Audience, 12 May 1999). It therefore gives me great pleasure to extend my cordial greeting to all those who will be taking part in this important event. It is an interesting initiative that unites the Catholic and Orthodox faithful of this country which - because of its geographical location and its long history, its culture and its tradition - keeps a record of its special ecumenical vocation, as it were, impressed in its roots. The wish that I warmly express is that believers in Christ may not only keep alive the memory of those unforgettable days but also, gathering the teachings of my venerable Predecessor John Paul II, that they may all strive to find together courageous ways to face with trust the great challenges of our time. -

Mons. -

They rose up in defence of the faith and tradition of the Romanian people and were able to overtly reject the atheistic and materialistic ideologies of a group of people forcibly installed at the leadership of a free state. Among these, the monks from Arad grouped around Bishop Andrei Magieru, were particularly distinguished as spiritual elites and pillars of the Orthodox faith and the national being. Ion Antonescu's Regime During September 1940 – June 1941. Measures Taken to Regain the Lost Provinces in the Summer of 1940
RJHIS 4 (1) 2017 Ion Antonescu’s regime during September 1940 – June 1941. Measures taken to regain the lost provinces in the summer of 1940 Elena Cazacu* Abstract: The impact produced by events occurring in the international arena in 1939 were felt by Romania starting with the summer of 1940 when the country was forced to give up without a fight the Romanian provinces acquired in 1918. Consequences were not only social and economic, but also political, causing King Carol II abdication in favour of his son, Mihai and the investment with full powers to run the Romanian state of General Ion Antonescu. Understanding the impact produced by the summer raptures in 1940 among the Romanian population, Antonescu decided to establish as main objective for both the foreign policy and the domestic one the recovery of these territories. Given his decision to participate in the summer of 1941 in the war against USSR, the present study aims to present different measures taken by his regime during September 1940 – June 1941 to regain the lost provinces. Keywords: Antonescu’s regime, Romanian provinces, territorial losses, administrative measures, Bukovina. Preliminary considerations The outbreak of the German aggression against Poland on the first day of September1 marked the beginning of a new world war based, this time, on the dissatisfaction of both winners and vanquished after the * Elena Cazacu is a PhD candidate at Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava.
