CONTRIBUȚIA OAMENILOR DE TEATRU LA EVENIMENTELE ISTORICE CE AU CONDUS LA CONSTITUIREA „ROMÂNIEI MARI” Corina ILIESCU1 Cuvinte-cheie: actori; dramaturgie; cultură; spirit național; sacrificiu; reîntregire națională. Keywords: actors; drama; culture; national spirit; sacrifice; national reunification. Abstract: It has been a hundred years since the first theatre performances in Romanian, at the beginning of the 19th century, until the establishment of the Great Romania in 1918, a period of time when the Romanian theater has closely evolved in connection with the assertion and awareness of the national identity. The men of culture in the three Romanian Principalities have been directly involved in the development of theatrical art, understanding that this is an important means of spreading the national aspirations among the population. Dintre acestea făceau parte: Ioan Heliade Rădulescu, Iancu Văcărescu, Gheorghe Asachi, Vasile Alecsandri, Ion Ghica, Costache Negruzzi, Grigore Cantacuzino, C.A. Rosetti, C. -
Regele Ferdinand I Al Romniei (1914-1927)
MUZEUL NAŢIONAL Vol. XX 2008 "UN BUN ROMÂN" - REGELE FERDINAND I AL ROMÂNIEI A GOOD ROMANIAN - KING FERDINAND I OF ROMANIA Ştefania Ciubotaru Abstract The article is a new approach to the position King Ferdinand held in the Romanian society and among European royals. Respectfully spoken about in foreign newspapers, he was a dynamic and elegant presence in Romania. During his time politics, economy and culture had a progressive evolution and there were associated to the King’s vocation and intelligence skills of leadership. Key words: King Ferdinand, the Union, duty, daily life, social and economic progress Regele Ferdinand I al României s-a născut la 24 august 1865 la Sigmaringen, iar primele instrucţiuni le-a primit în familie de la profesorul Gröbels, urmând apoi gimnaziul din Düsseldorf. -

DEUX SIÈCLES D’INFLUENCE FRANÇAISE CONSIDERATIONS ON MODERNIZING AND REDEFINING THE NEOLATINIC PHYSIOGNOMY OF THE ROMANIAN LANGUAGE. TWO CENTURIES OF FRENCH INFLUENCE Constantin-Ioan MLADIN “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia (Romania) / Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje (Republic of North Macedonia) e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: This contribution discusses the transformations of the Romanian language (in parallel with the modernization of the Romanian public institutions) inspired or triggered by the “French model”. After some conceptual and terminological considerations (re-latinization, re- romanization, Latin-Roman occidentalization, re-occidentalization, modernity in the dynamics of the language), the author evokes the circumstances (historical, political, economic, cultural, social) that favored the franchizing of the Romanian language and details this process from a chronological perspective (the Hungarian and German branches, the Greek branch, the Russian branch). With the help of relevant examples, the most significant changes brought to Romanian by French influence (phonetic, lexical, semantic, morphosyntactic changes) are presented. The article insists on some complementary vectors in the process of franchising the Romanian language: the Phanariot princes, the preceptors and secretaries of the aristocratic families, the French consuls in the Romanian Principalities, the young people who had studied abroad and the emancipated women, the literature, the press, and the Francophone education. Key words: Franchising, French language, modern language, English language § 1.
Cultural Trauma – the Case of the Winner1
Cultural Trauma – The Case of the Winner1 ZOLTÁN BRETTER Politics in Central Europe (ISSN: 1801-3422) Vol. 16, No. 1S DOI: 10.2478/pce-2020-0004 Abstract: My study is an analysis of the emergence of the “Golden Dream” narrative in Romania, right after World War I. Along the way, I make some theoretical contributions to cultural trauma studies. ‘Winner’ and ‘loser’ are terms used to define fixed situations. Usually, only the loser (the victim, defeated) might suffer a trauma, while the occur‑ rence of trauma is denied for the winner (the perpetrator, victor). We shall dig a little deeper and wider, demonstrating that Romania, an overall winner of WWI, will face, right after victory, a ‘cultural shock’ which has to be repressed, as part of the “Golden Dream” narrative. Through a detailed, economic, social and political analysis, I’ll be trying to argue that a shattering trauma has engendered in Romanian society; yet an‑ other addition to a whole ‘traumatic history’. The ensuing orthodox ethno‑nationalism takes its root from this trauma. From time ‑to ‑time, we will take a comparative glance at the trauma of the loser, particularly when we will be discussing the omissions of an otherwise seamless narrative. Keywords: cultural trauma, Romania, Hungary, authoritarianism, interwar period Introduction “Where the disease is various, no particular definite remedy can meet the wants of all. Only the attraction of an abstract idea, or of an ideal state, can unite in common action, multitudes who seek a universal cure for many special evils and a common restorative applicable to many different conditions” (Acton 1862: 3). -

I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes. -

The Transylvanian School – Premises Underlying the Critical Editions of Texts
EUGEN PAVEL THE TRANSYLVANIAN SCHOOL – PREMISES UNDERLYING THE CRITICAL EDITIONS OF TEXTS 1. It is widely accepted today that the beginnings of modern Romanian spirituality are marked by the Transylvanian School movement, an ideological and cultural current which also coincided with an unprecedented revival of identity, with the awakening of self-consciousness for a nation that had been relegated, for many centuries, to the periphery of history. Upholding the movement’s humanist- emancipatory program, Romanian scholars could assert themselves in the first decades of the eighteenth century, both in thought and deed, as true Europeans, who were open to modernity. The study of this epoch reveals a genuine treasure trove of Romanian thought and feeling, of tremendous and far from obsolete intellectual and formative relevance for all generations. This explains the stringent need for a reconsideration of the writings pertaining to the Transylvanian Enlightenment movements, whether in print or in manuscript, published or unpublished, through the lens of contemporary Romanian historiography and philology. It also explains, implicitly, the pressing necessity for compiling a critical chrestomathy of those texts. To start with, an anthology of this magnitude requires laying down a few methodological principles: explaining the concept, fixing its chronology, providing a critical overview of previous editings, and presenting the criteria underlying the selection of the texts. 1.1. It should be noted that the term “school” (and, implicitly, its attendant qualifier) was not crystallized spontaneously in the period, at the time of the birth and evolution of the movement itself, even though all its followers experienced a sense of belonging to that group.
