Postgalerie The Postgalerie in Karlsruhe’s former central post office is one of the most beautiful shopping galleries in Germany. Südliche Waldstraße (Southern Waldstrasse) This little jewel in the heart of the city is said to be the most creative street in the whole of Karlsruhe. No wonder, because the many busi- nesses in this buzzing street are run by their owners with heart and soul. Heading the line-up is the interior-design store “burger”, offering the most renowned collections of modern design for homes and commercial projects.

Kaiserstrasse - the main shopping avenue The “Kaiserstrasse” is the main shopping avenue in Karlsruhe’s city centre. This is where you’ll find numerous retail stores, cafes, and snack bars. Enjoy a city stroll along Baden’s longest shopping street. Here, Karlsruhe’s city centre can be full of lively ambience one minute and then, in the next street café, be transformed into a haven of peaceful relaxation.

Zirkel A crescent-shaped boulevard set before Karlsruhe’s “Schlossplatz”, the “Zirkel” is a favourite place for art lovers to meet: here, two galleries combine to form the “Galerien am Zirkel”, comprising the gallery of Karl Ewald Schrade and the Neue Kunst Gallery of Michael Oess. Located at the western end of the Zirkel is the Staatliche Kunsthalle (State Art Gallery). Besides art, there are other high-end shops, too, such as Löb High-Fidelity for acoustic enjoyment and Goldschmiede Zöller for fine jewellery.

Fächerbad The Fächerbad swimming complex is situated in the heart of Karlsruhe’s tranquil Waldstadt district. As the biggest sports swimming baths in the region, it offers everything sport-oriented swimmers look for. A 50-metre pool in the indoor section ensures an opti- mum environment for training and competitions, and the generously proportioned high-diving pool provides ideal conditions too. A special highlight is the convertible pool: at 25 metres in length, it is truly a showpiece in the world of competitive swimming. Fresh air when the sun is shining – the roof closed for rain. Badisches Landesmuseum (Baden State Museum) The Baden State Museum in Karlsruhe Palace is the biggest museum of cultural history in Baden-Württemberg and one of the most active of its kind in Germany. With its collections of worldwide significance, it presents art and historical spheres of life from prehistory and early history all the way through to ancient cultures, the Middle Ages, the Baroque period and the 21st century. Visitors are welcome to climb the palace tower until one hour before the museum closes to get an impressive view of the fan-shaped layout of the city’s streets. Rechtshistorisches Museum (Legal Historical Museum) The Karlsruhe Museum of Legal History is located in the Federal Sup- reme Court in the city centre and gives visitors an overview of the historical development of law. Staatliche Kunsthalle (State Art Gallery) Comprising three buildings on Hans-Thoma-Strasse – the main building, the “Junge Kunsthalle”, and the “Orangerie” – the State Art Hall is rich in tradition and one of Germany’s biggest museums. It sees itself as an intermediary between the past, the present, and the future. At the core of the museum’s work is the preservation of the legacy of seven centuries of European art history as well as uphol- ding the present-day dialogue with the collection and the quality of its enlargement. Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde (State Museum of Natural History) The Natural History Museum presents a permanent exhibition of in- digenous and exotic plants and animals as well as rocks and fossils. Städtische Galerie (Municipal Gallery) The main focus of this exhibition is on local art dating back to the founding of Karlsruhe’s Academy of Art (1854) and German art from 1945 to the present day. To complement the gallery’s own portfolio, the top-class collection of the Cologne-based married couple Eber- hard and Ute Garnatz forms a highlight in its own right with key works of German painting, sculpture, and photography since 1960. ZKM | Centre for Art and Media A special cultural experience awaits visitors in the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. marotte-Figurentheater The marotte figure theatre has had its own permanent premises in Karlsruhe since 1987. marotte is distinguished by the broad spect- rum of its means of expression and its repertoire, which ranges from traditional fairy tales to theatrical versions of modern children’s books and experimental plays. The theatre uses a wide variety of figures such as hand puppets, table-top puppets, marionettes and other objects as well as shadow play. Botanischer Garten (Botanical Gardens) The Botanical Gardens are located near the Orangerie on the peri- phery of the Palace gardens and is appreciated as an oasis of green in the heart of the former ducal residence of Karlsruhe. It is home to more than 20 special species of trees from different continents, glasshouses with cacti, and numerous greenhouses full of tropical plants. Secluded corners with springs, sculptures, and a wonderfully laid out café terrace combine to form a charming ensemble. www.botanischer-garten-karlsruhe.de

Günther-Klotz-Anlage (Günther-Klotz park) The Günther-Klotz park is a beautifully located belt of green between the districts of Südweststadt and Grünwinkel. With the Alb river flow- ing through it, spacious areas for recreation and relaxation, several small lakes, a rental-boat lake, a basketball field, and a lot more besides, the park is an ideal spot for spending quality leisure time. It is also the venue for the annual DAS FEST, one of the biggest open-air events in Germany.

Schlossgarten (Palace gardens) In 1967, for Germany’s National Garden Show, the Palace gardens were laid out in the style of English landscaped parklands. The green expanses are interspersed with sculptures from the baroque period to modern times, memorials, fountains from a variety of epochs, and also features the municipal park lake at its centre. This is where Karlsruhe’s citizens come to escape the hustle and bustle of their daily routines. The Federal Court of Justice The Federal Court of Justice was first opened in Karlsruhe on 1 October 1950. It is the Federal Republic of Germany’s highest court in the field of ordinary jurisdiction, i.e. in the administration of civil and criminal law, which, in the lower instances, is exercised by the local, regional, and higher regional courts operating under the aegis of the individual states. The Federal Constitutional Court The Federal Constitutional Court has been based in Karlsruhe from its very beginnings. It moved into its present official premises in the immediate vicinity of Karlsruhe Palace (between Schlossplatz and the Botanical Gardens) in 1969. Turmberg The “Turmberg” is the prominent hill overlooking Durlach, the town surrounding the former royal residence of Baden. It is 256m high and the northernmost peak of the Black Forest on the tran- sition between the central German uplands and the rolling hills of the Kraichgau. From it, there’s a wonderful view of the Rhine Plain, Durlach, and Karlsruhe. Germany’s oldest funicular railway, the “Turmbergbahn”, is one way of getting to the top. Alternatively, those of a more robust constitution can take the steps of the “Hexenstäffele”. The Anders restaurant on Turmberg offers a wide selection of regional and seasonal cuisine.

The “Ständehaus” remembrance site The “Badische Ständehaus” in Karlsruhe is rightly regarded as an institution that paved the way for democracy in Germany. The “Ständehaus” remembrance site, where the history of the Baden state parliament is presented in an exhibition, has been keeping the memory of this tradition alive since 1993. Free admission. “Marktplatz” and the Pyramid The “Marktplatz” around the pyramid is the best-known square in Karlsruhe and forms the city centre. It also accommodates the city’s iconic landmark, the pyramid built in 1823. Beneath it lies the crypt of the church “Konkordienkirche”, demolished in 1807, in which the city’s founding father, Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach (1679-1738), lies buried. Also located there, facing Karlsruhe’s town hall, is the Protestant municipal church with a tower and steeple almost 62 metres high as well as the Grand Duke Ludwig fountain. Numerous cafés and restaurants around the square invite you to take a break and watch the world go by.

The Square of Fundamental Rights The Square of Fundamental Rights, built in 2005, is situated between “Zirkel” and “Schlossplatz” in the pedestrian zone con- necting “Marktplatz” and Karlsruhe Palace. The square is dotted with 24 double-faced signs displaying statements made by judges, lawyers, and citizens relating to different aspects of right and wrong. The square is a gift from the City of Karlsruhe to the nearby Federal Constitutional Court.

Prinz-Max-Palais Today, “Prinz-Max-Palais” – originally a grand retirement residence of a business tycoon, then a palace of the Baden high nobi- lity, residence of the last Imperial Chancellor of the Reich, seat of the Federal Constitutional Court, and university building – accommodates a wide array of cultural institutions: a department of the municipal museum, the literary society, the museum of Upper Rhine literature, and the children’s and youth library. Karlsruhe Palace Karlsruhe Palace is the point around which the city’s fan-shape opens out. The palace is surrounded by the magnificent palace garden and the spacious palace forecourt. Today, Karlsruhe Palace accommodates the Baden State Museum and is always a good motif for a photograph. It was built between 1715 and 1718 on behalf of Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach and was henceforth the palace of residence of the ruling sovereigns for almost 200 years. The Karlsruhe PALACE ILLUMINATIONS have been taking place here in summer every year since 2015. Straße der Demokratie (The Street of Democracy) A tour of discovery along the so-called “Straße der Demokratie” is always worthwhile: Karlsruhe was the birthplace of the Baden Constitution in 1818 and is still home to Germany’s highest courts today. A whole row of cities and institutions with historical ties to the freedom movement have come together to increase awareness of this fascinating cultural and historical heritage in the public domain. Their cross-border project is the “Straße der Demokratie”. In Karlsruhe, the “street of democracy” leads to a total of eight locations featuring in this history, among them the “Ständehaus”, the town hall, the Federal Court of Justice, Prinz-Max-Palais, the Federal Constitutional Court, and the Square of Fundamental Rights.

In the last few years, Karlsruhe, one of the youngest cities in Germany, has developed into a vibrant and dynamic large city in which savoir vivre is paramount. Young, modern, and offering quality of life

Rheinstetten is a young and modern town. Arising from the muni- cipalities of Forchheim, Mörsch, and Neuburgweier, it has become a large district town with 21,000 residents. Rheinstetten lies in the Karlsruhe “Technologieregion”, directly on the Rhine and right next-door to Karlsruhe as an important regional centre in the heart of Europe. Two thirds of the district are natural areas, whereby a valuable landscape has evolved, a special feature of which are the Rhine wetlands. The town is surrounded by meadows, fields, and orchards, all of which are a favourite destination for cyclists, joggers, and ramblers. Rheinstetten’s most popular places for an outing, however, are the two bathing lakes: as a leisure and recreation area, the Epplesee is appreciated even by water sports enthusiasts from outside the region whereas the Fermasee, being part of a nature reserve and a protected landscape, offers more peaceful environment. In Rheinstetten, citizen involvement and celebrating together go hand in hand, which can be experienced at a multitude of festi- vals and events all year round. With 130 clubs and associations, numerous cultural and social institutions as well as dynamic church communities, Rheinstetten offers attractive leisure and sports facilities and a stimulating community life. Away from the big city – historical and bustling

Ettlingen’s historical Old Town with its mediaeval, winding alley- ways and buzzing pedestrian precinct invites you to stroll, explore and shop. Away from the big city, a wide diversity of shops offers a special shopping experience. The Old Town‘s multifa- ceted offerings are rounded off by numerous restaurants, pubs, bars, beer gardens and cafés, providing a great selection of fare to pamper your palate. A gourmet restaurant, hearty cuisine, a snack in the microbrewery, or just coffee and cake... there‘s something to suit every taste. After a strenuous day at the trade fair, simply wind down and relax - which makes the Albgaubad, with its spacious sauna landscape and magnificent sauna garden, the right place to head for. The Ettlingen Legends are another highlight, which the cursed master baker tells at night on his ramble through the Old Town with burning torches - spooky, witty, beautiful, and giving listeners the creeps. Of course, you can explore the Old Town on an evening tour with the night watchman, too. Arriving from the A 5/A 8 motorways From the A 8 from Stuttgart, take the A 5 to “Basel”, take exit 48 “Karlsruhe-Süd” and then follow the signs to the Trade Fair Centre (“Messe”).

Arriving from the A 65 motorway The A 65 merges into the B 10. Leave the B 10 at exit 8 and follow the signs to the Trade Fair Centre (“Messe”).

Parking A total of 7000 parking spaces in 3 car parks are available for cars on the grounds of the Trade Fair Centre as well a VIP / press car park.

Arriving by Train Karlsruhe is a hub for ICE, InterCity, EuroCity and InterRegio trains, and is located directly on the Hamburg-Frankfurt-Basel intercity line. The east-west line Karlsruhe-Stuttgart-Munich begins here too. And the high-speed TGV train takes you from Paris to Karlsruhe in just three hours.

Arriving by plane Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre has excellent connections to at least 4 airports: Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden (a drive of approx. 30 minutes) and other major international airports such as Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Strasbourg (a 50–60 minute drive).

Arriving by public transport Messe/Leichtsandstraße or Messe Nord tram stops From the city centre: Line S2 (destination Rheinstetten). From Karlsruhe central station: Line 3 (destination Heide) or Line 4 (destination Waldstadt) to Europaplatz; change to Line S2 (destination Rheinstetten). Line S41 (destination Freudenstadt central station) or Line S4 (destination Achern); change to the Regionalbus Line 106, (destination Neuburgweier Breslauer Str.) From Durlacher Tor: Line S2 (destination Rheinstetten).

You can also take the Messe-Express service for certain events.

Important notice Karlsruhe is in motion and is working on a forward-looking infra- structural project. An urban-railway tunnel and a road tunnel are being built beneath the city, scheduled for completion by 2021.
