Chinese Woodblock Prints
!
This volume results from a collaboration between the eminent art historian Tcheng-Chen-To and the celebrated author Lu Hsun. The colored woodblock prints date from the late Ming Dynasty and were first published in 1644. Collected in the Shih Chu studio, Beijing Editor: Jung Pao Chai Hsin Chi, Beijing
Woodblock!printing!uses!relief!carving!on!a!block!of!hardwood!to!transfer!ink,!and!later,!color,!to! paper.!The!white!areas!on!the!paper!appear!where!the!block!of!wood!has!been!carved!away!so! that!it!does!not!come!in!contact!with!the!paper.!!
Woodblock!printing!is!the!oldest!of!all!printing!techniques!for!both!text!and!graphics.!It!is!the! foundation!for!modern!book!printing!as!well.!Precisely!when!and!where!it!was!first!developed!is! unclear.!The!technique!was!used!in!China!as!early!as!the!third!century!AD.!But!there!are!also! indications!that!the!technique!was!known!to!the!ancient!Egyptians,!as!suggested!by!the!engraved! panels!found!on!some!sarcophagi.!!
In!any!case,!by!the!sixth!century!AD,!woodblock!printing!was!widely!used!in!China!for! reproducing!images!on!a!large!scale,!paving!the!way!for!book!production.!Color!was!introduced!to! the!process!in!the!course!of!the!16th!century.!This!innovation!reached!its!peak!in!China!in!the!17th! century,!the!period!when!the!prints!in!the!MoneyMuseum’s!book!were!produced.!

Gustave!Flaubert!is!a!giant!of!French!literature.!Despite!that!exalted!status,!it!cannot!be!said!that! he!led!a!happy!life.!The!son!of!a!surgeon,!he!was!born!in!Rouen!in!1821!and!endured!a!childhood! devoid!of!warmth!or!affection.!He!was!sent!to!Paris!to!study!law!but!he!was!an!indifferent!student! and!in!1844,!after!an!attack!of!epilepsy,!he!broke!off!his!studies!and!began!to!travel.!He!first!went! to!Corsica!and!Italy,!then!on!to!Greece,!the!Middle!East!and!North!Africa.!In!1864,!as!a!wellV established!writer,!he!returned!to!France!and!settled!in!Croisset,!near!Rouen,!where!he!died!in! 1880.!
Much!as!Flaubert!himself!was!an!outsider!in!life,!his!“Trois!Contes,”!Three%Tales,!is!a!bit!of!a! literary!outlier.!Published!in!1877,!and!despite!good!reviews,!they!received!far!less!attention!than! Flaubert’s!other!work,!not!least!because!the!author!himself!downplayed!their!significance.! Readers,!critics!and!other!authors!—!Kafka,!Calvino!and!Burgess,!to!name!but!a!few!—!disagreed,! and!the!book!is!broadly!acknowledged!as!a!masterpiece!of!shortVstory!writing!and!psychological! insight.!
The!stories!are!about!three!very!different!lives:!a!poor!servant!girl,!St.!John!the!Baptist!and!a! soldier,!Saint!Julian!the!Hospitalier.!They!focus!on!questions!of!faith,!fate!and!worldly!power.! Our!volume!contains!The%Legend%of%Saint%Julian%the%Hospitalier!and!is!richly!illustrated!with! the!engravings!of!French!Symbolist!painter!Gaston!Bussière.! !

The!tragic!story!of!the!adulterous!love!between!the!Cornish!prince!Tristan!and!the!Irish!princess! Isolde!was!originally!a!Celtic!legend!but!took!root!in!the!literature!of!France.!It!was!already!a! fixture!of!French!romantic!poetry!in!the!12th!century.!Richard!Wagner!completed!his!opera! Tristan%und%Isolde!in!1865!but!it!opened!in!Paris!only!at!the!end!of!the!19th!century,!and!then!it! caused!an!uproar.!The!appropriation!of!this!fixture!of!national!identity!by!that!most!Germanic!of! composers,!Wagner,!was!greeted!with!considerable!consternation!by!the!French!public!the! intellectual!establishment.!!
To!reclaim!the!story!for!France,!Joseph!Bédier,!the!leading!French!medievalist!of!his!day,!sought!to! recover!what!many!regarded!as!a!symbol!of!French!national!culture.!He!published!a!new!version! of!the!tale,!returning!to!what!he!argued!was!its!original!written!source,!that!of!Thomas!of!Brittany,! a!12th!century!poet.!The!MoneyMuseum’s!volume!is!an!example!of!Bédier’s!version,!which!still! enjoys!a!wide!readership!today.!

Goethe!was!not!only!a!giant!of!literature;!he!was!also!a!prolific!lady’s!man,!even!in!his!later!years.! The!Marienbad!Elegy!is!part!of!his!Trilogy%of%Passion,!three!poems!on!love.!The!elegy!was! triggered!by!his!oneVsided!infatuation!with!Ulrike!von!Levetzow.!They!met!at!the!Marienbad!spa! in!1821,!where!Goethe!had!gone!for!health!reasons.!He!was!seventyVtwo!at!the!time!and!she!a! mere!seventeen.!The!great!man’s!passion!led!him!to!instruct!a!friend,!the!Grand!Due!Karl!August,! to!deliver!his!marriage!proposal!to!Ulrike!on!his!behalf.!Ulrike’s!rejection!was!immediate!and! crushing,!but!it!led!to!the!Marienbad!Elegy,!which!many!regards!as!one!of!Goethe’s!greatest!and! certainly!one!of!his!most!personal!poems.!
The!publishers!Officina!Bodoni!printed!books!by!hand!in!Montagnola!di!Lugano,!Switzerland,!and! after!1928,!in!Verona,!Italy.!Their!books!are!widely!collected!and!greatly!admired!by!bibliophiles! as!outstanding!examples!of!bibliophile!quality.!

A!young!theology!student,!Pfannenstiel,!has!a!rather!low!opinion!of!himself.!He!is!certain!that!he’s! far!too!lowborn!to!marry!the!fair!Rahel,!the!pastor’s!daughter.!He!appeals!to!General!Wertheimer! for!help!but!the!general!also!thinks!the!young!man!is!a!poor!match!for!Rahel.!Nonetheless,!the! general!agrees!to!help!the!young!man!as!best!he!can!and!what!follows!is!a!humorous!comedy!of! manners!that!has!won!a!permanent!place!in!Swiss!literature.!
The!edition!in!the!MoneyMuseum’s!collection!is!one!of!three!hundred!reVissues!published!to! commemorate!the!25th!anniversary!of!Meyer’s!death!in!1923.!Our!example!carries!the!number! 218.!The!engravings!are!by!the!wellVknown!Swiss!artist!Fritz!Gilsi.!

In!1830!France!was!in!turmoil.!The!July!Revolution!filled!the!streets!with!students,!merchants!and! workers!fighting!alongside!each!other!against!the!rule!of!King!Charles!X.!They!were!protesting!the! abolition!of!press!freedom!and!election!changes!they!feared!would!marginalize!their!votes.!And! right!in!the!middle!of!it!all,!in!the!heart!of!Paris,!Eugène!Delacroix!had!his!studio.!!

The!son!of!a!pastor,!Hans!Bloesch!was!born!in!1878!in!Bern.!Except!for!a!few!years!in!Rome,! where!he!worked!as!a!correspondent!for!the!Frankfurter!Allgemeinen!Zeitung!and!Bern’s!Bund! newspaper,!he!spent!his!entire!life!in!the!Swiss!capitol,!passing!away!there!in!1945.!!
After!completing!his!university!studies!in!literature,!philosophy!and!history,!Bloesch’s!literary! inclinations!led!him!to!work!as!an!editor!at!various!journals!and!newspapers.!In!1919!he!began! his!career!as!a!librarian!and!in!1927!he!became!Head!Librarian!of!the!city!and!university!libraries! of!Bern.!
His!passion!for!fine!books!was!evident!in!another!activity,!as!a!publisher.!From!1911!through! 1944,!a!year!before!his!death,!he!published!numerous!volumes,!including!the!complete!works!of! Jeremias!Gotthelf!as!well!as!various!chronicles!of!Bern’s!history.!He!also!had!a!taste!for!the!exotic,! like!this!record!of!a!journey!to!Jerusalem!made!by!the!Bernese!choirmaster!Heinrich!Wölfli!in! 1520.!
Besides!his!various!professional!engagements!with!books,!Hans!Bloesch!was!also!president!of! Bern’s!bibliophile!society.!His!love!of!finely!crafted!books!is!evident!in!the!MoneyMuseum’s! example!of!his!publishing!endeavors.!

The!Roman!poet!Horace!lived!from!65!to!8BC.!A!contemporary!of!Augustus,!he!experienced! Rome’s!tumultuous!transformation!from!Republic!to!Empire.!After!arriving!in!Rome!from!the! countryside!to!study,!he!then!spent!some!years!studying!in!Athens,!which!remained!a!great!center! of!learning!in!the!ancient!world!even!after!Rome’s!ascent!to!dominance.!There,!he!doubtless! acquired!a!deep!appreciation!of!ancient!Greek!lyric!poetry!and!honed!his!skills!both!as!a! rhetorician!and!as!a!poet.!
But!Rome!would!not!leave!him!to!his!writing!in!Athens.!After!leading!the!assassination!of!Julius! Cesar,!Brutus!traveled!to!Athens!to!recruit!support!for!his!republican!cause!among!expatriate! Jean!de!La!Fontaine’s!Fables!rank!among!the!greatest!masterpieces!of!French!literature.!Born!in! 1621!to!a!bourgeois!family!in!the!town!of!ChateauVThierry,!outside!of!Paris,!Jean!followed!his! father’s!profession,!forest!superintendent,!and!eventually!went!on!to!study!law.!He!married!young! and,!it!seems,!unhappily.!His!wife!remained!in!ChateauVThierry!while!Jean!moved!to!Paris.!
Thanks!to!some!wellVtimed!patronage!from!aristocratic!admirers!of!his!work,!he!established! himself!as!a!writer!in!Paris!and!a!colleague!of!the!leading!literary!figures!of!the!age,!including! Racine!and!Molière.!His!writing!career!began!haltingly,!with!some!translations!and!epigrams,!but! greater!things!were!soon!to!follow.!!
The!Fables!were!an!immediate!and!lasting!triumph.!He!did!not!invent!the!basic!elements!of!the! stories!he!told.!Their!sources!included!folklore!and!the!tales!of!ancient!Greece,!for!example,!but! his!retelling!is!so!rich,!nuanced!and!skillful!that!he!made!something!entirely!new!from!these!old! tales.!And!stylistically,!his!language!was,!and!is,!universally!lauded!as!the!pinnacle!of!literary! At!the!beginning!of!the!1920s!the!brothers!André!and!Philippe!Gonin!decided!to!turn!their!love!of! books!into!a!business.!They!had!grown!up!around!bibliophile!books!in!their!parents’!shop!in! Lausanne,!so!it!is!no!wonder!that!they!aimed!to!produce!the!finest!possible!books!for!discerning! collectors.!
Philippe!Gonin!had!worked!in!Paris!as!a!printer!and!publisher,!producing!wonderful!illustrated! classics!from!authors!like!Ovid,!Horace!and!Virgil,!as!well!as!more!“modern”!works!by!the!likes!of! de!La!Fontaine.!
At!the!same!time,!André!Gonin!took!over!the!family!bookstore!in!Lausanne,!and!published!a! distinguished!series!of!bibliophile!books!on!the!side,!illustrated!by!some!of!the!most!famous! artists!of!the!day.!In!the!late!1940s!André!was!able!to!add!the!celebrated!Swiss!artist!Hans!Erni!as! an!illustrator.!Over!the!years,!this!proved!to!be!a!very!fruitful!collaboration,!with!Erni!illustrating! many!Gonin!publications.!

Werner!Bischof’s!life!was!short!and!intense.!He!began!his!photographic!studies!at!the! Kunstgewerbeschule!Zürich!and!went!on!to!become!one!of!the!most!widely!admired! photographers!in!the!world.!!
He!started!his!career!as!a!fashion!photographer!and!then!documented!Switzerland’s!beloved! national!exposition!in!1939!–!the!Landi.!In!the!meantime,!Conzett!&!Huber!had!launched!Du,!one! of!Europe’s!leading!cultural!magazines,!and!in!1941!the!magazine!published!a!series!of!brilliant! nature!studies!by!Bischof.!This!was!the!beginning!of!a!most!fruitful!collaboration!between!the! magazine!and!the!photographer.!!
It!was!his!photojournalism!that!won!him!his!largest!audience.!His!travels!throughout!Europe!after! the!Second!World!War!recorded!the!devastation!the!war!had!wrought,!both!physical!and! psychological.!These!moving!images!brought!him!to!the!attention!of!the!eminent!photographers! collective!Magnum,!which!was!founded!in!1949.!Bischof!became!only!the!fifth!member!of!this! exclusive!group.!
In!1952!he!traveled!to!Japan.!There!he!witnessed!a!country!well!on!its!way!to!recovery.!His!photos! show!a!vigorous!population!with!most!of!the!war!damage!already!cleared!away.!He!was! enchanted!by!the!aesthetic!of!the!country!and!photographed!the!old!and!the!new!Japan!with!his! typical!fine!eye!for!humanity.!ThirtyVeight!years!old!in!1954,!Bischof!traveled!to!South!America!for! Magnum,!where!he!died!in!a!car!accident!in!the!Andes!Mountains.!!

After!the!success!of!his!first!photo!book,!USA,!Emil!Schulthess!embarked!on!a!series!of!similar! explorations!around!the!world.!In!1955V6!he!made!two!trips!to!Africa,!each!lasting!five!months.! First!he!crisscrossed!the!northern!part!of!the!continent,!then!the!southern.!He!traveled!in!a! specially!equipped!station!wagon!and!returned!with!a!treasure!of!images.!
This!material!he!collected!was!enough!to!fill!two!volumes!of!photography,!one!for!each!stage!of! his!journey!through!Africa.!!
By!the!way,!the!strong!impression!Schulthess’s!photo!books!makes!on!viewers!is!not!only!due!to! the!considerable!quality!of!the!images!they!contain,!but!also!to!the!highly!evolved!gravure! printing!technology!they!used.!Switzerland!led!the!application!of!this!printing!technique!and!it! was!ideal!for!high!quality!color!and!blackVandVwhite!reproduction.!

Hermann!Hesse!(1988!–!1962)!is!one!of!the!most!widely!read!German!authors!of!the!20th!century.! But!his!novella!Erwin,!published!posthumously,!is!far!less!well!known!than!many!of!his!other! books,!which!include!Steppenwolf,!Siddhartha!and!The%Glass%Bead%Game.!
Erwin!is!one!of!Hesse’s!early!works,!probably!conceived!1907!or!1908.!Autobiographical!in!origin,! it!refers!to!Hesse’s!experiences!as!a!student!at!a!Protestant!seminary!in!Maulbronn!in!southern! Germany.!Born!into!a!family!of!Pietists,!Hesse!was!enrolled!in!the!seminary!at!the!age!of!fourteen! to!prepare!him!for!theological!studies.!But!the!young!author!didn’t!last!long!in!the!rigid! atmosphere!of!the!school.!After!half!a!year!he!fled!the!oppressive!atmosphere!that!he!felt!was!bent! on!crushing!him!as!an!individual.!But!despite!the!brevity!of!his!stay,!his!time!at!Maulbronn!left!a! deep!impression!on!Hesse,!as!is!evident!in!his!later!works!like!Beneath%the%Wheel!and!Narcissus% and%Goldmund.!

Printmaking!was!an!important!medium!for!Henri!de!ToulouseVLautrec!(1864V1901).!Indeed,!the! posters!he!designed!for!the!nightclub!the!Moulin!Rouge!made!him!a!star!overnight!in!the!Paris!of! the!1890s.!!
Although!an!aristocrat!by!birth,!ToulouseVLautrec!lived!in!the!Montmartre!in!Paris,!the!district!of! cabarets,!cafés,!restaurants,!dancehalls!and!bordellos.!He!was!always!an!outsider:!a!bone!disorder! gave!him!a!distorted!physique—his!torso!grew!to!adult!proportions!but!his!legs!remained!the!size! of!a!child’s.!He!enjoyed!the!company!of!actors,!dancers,!singers!and!performers!of!all!kinds,! including!prostitutes,!who!often!were!the!subjects!of!his!portraits.!
Among!his!favorite!subjects!was!the!singer!and!dancer!Yvette!Guilbert.!His!portraits!of!her!belong! to!high!points!of!French!lithography.!His!portfolio!of!ten!prints!devoted!to!her,!known!as!the! “Série!anglaise,”!appeared!in!1898!and!was!later!republished!in!1920!in!Paris!and!in!1965!in! Born! in! 1909,! the! Swiss! artist! Hans! Erni! studied! surveying! and! mechanical! drawing! before! shifting! his! focus! to! art.! From! 1928! to! 1930! he! attended! at! art! schools! in! Lucerne,! Paris! and! Berlin.!He!absorbed!influences!from!many!artists!of!the!Modern!movement!–!Braque!and!Picasso! among!them!–!before!finding!his!own!unique!visual!language!in!the!late!1930s.!!
Erni’s!vision!is!expressed!with!attention!to!classical!drawing!that!unites!abstraction!and!realism.! His!art!finds!the!underlying!humanity!in!a!world!increasing!distorted!by!the!dominance!of!science! and!technology.!As!it!says!on!his!homepage,!“The!work!of!Hans!Erni!teaches!simply!what!it!means! to!remain!human!in!a! human!world.”!His!own!humanity!is!evident!in!the!many!posters!he!has! made!on!issues!of!social!justice.!
Erni’s!long!career!features!many!highlights,!including!the!monumental!mural!at!the!Swiss!Expo!of! 1939.!He!art!has!found!form!in!various!media!–!ceramics,!postage!stamps,!book!illustrations,!set! design,! etc.! –! but! it! is! through! his! graphics! that! he! is! best! known! to! the! broad! public.! He! is! a! master!of!lithography!and!horses,!the!subject!of!the!MoneyMuseum’s!book,!are!one!of!his!favorite! themes.!
In!1979,!Hans!Erni!saw!the!opening!of!his!own!museum,!on!the!grounds!of!the!Swiss!Museum!of! Transport!in!Lucerne,!where!he!still!lives.!

!“I!believe!that!photographs!should!be!simple!technically,!and!easy!to!look!at.!They!shouldn’t!be! directed!at!other!photographers;!their!point!is!to!make!ordinary!people!react—to!laugh,!or!see! something!they!hadn’t!taken!in!before,!or!to!be!touched.”!This!is!what!Tony!Armstrong!Jones!(as! he!was!then!known)!wrote!in!his!first!book,!London,!published!in!1958.!In!1960,!after!marrying! Princess!Margaret,!sister!of!Queen!Elizabeth!II,!he!acquired!the!name!Lord!Snowdon.!
His!name!changed!but!his!view!of!the!role!of!photography!did!not.!Whether!fashion!or! documentary,!Snowdon!has!tried!to!capture!images!that!reveal!what!it!means!to!be!human.!
Before!concentrating!on!photography,!he!pursued!architectural!studies!but!after!a!couple!of! semesters!he!lost!his!motivation.!His!uncle,!artist!and!set!designer!Oliver!Messel,!persuaded!the! young!Armstrong!Jones!to!photograph!the!actors!and!performers!of!the!theater.!This!began!a! lifelong!association!for!Snowdon!with!the!performing!arts.!But!it!was!fashion!photography!–!for! The!I%Ching,!The!Book!of!Changes,!is!one!of!the!oldest!Chinese!classics!and!perhaps!the!oldest! book!of!divination!in!the!world.!Its!origins!date!back!at!least!to!the!12th!century!BC!and!probably! earlier.!!
However!old!it!is,!the!I!Ching!doubtless!is!one!of!the!most!important!books!of!world!literature.!Its! wisdom!and!insight!still!speak!to!us!today!and!the!book!is!still!consulted!for!advice!every!day!all! over!the!world.!For!many!people!it!contains!the!roots!of!the!two!major!schools!of!Chinese! philosophy,!Confucianism!and!Taoism.!!
The!texts!of!the!I%Ching%comprise!sets!of!oracular!statements!represented!by!64!sets!of!six!lines! each!called!hexagrams.!By!casting!coins,!specific!hexagrams!and!their!associated!texts!are! selected.!And!that,!of!course,!is!just!the!beginning!of!the!divination!process.!As!usual,!it’s!all!a! matter!of!interpretation,!between!the!yin!and!the!yang,!the!stable!and!the!changing.!But!the! richness!and!subtlety!of!the!I!Ching!have!made!it!an!endless!source!of!wisdom!about!the!present! and!the!future.!! !
