Planejado originalmente como um volume único que logo se mostrou demasiado grande, formam agora um par que se complementa. O Novo Desafio Imperial lida com a natureza geral da nova ordem imperial –como entender e explicá-la, e quais suas forças e fraquezas. O Império Reloaded circunda-o com uma análise das finanças, da cultura e do modo com que o novo imperialismo está penetrando nas maiores regiões do mundo –Ásia Menor, Sudeste Asiático, Índia, China, África, América Latina, Rússia e Europa. Os dois volumes são unidos por alguns temas distintivos. Todos os artigos enxergam o capitalismo globalizado e o imperialismo estadunidense como duas dimensões de um fenômeno único –um ponto que restou muito claro no artigo de Gill no presente volume. Todos reconhecem que o que melhor distingue a supremacia dos EUA na nova ordem imperial não é seu poder militar e de vigilância, apesar de imenso, mas a penetração nos estados, economias e ordens sociais dos outros países capitalistas avançados pelo estado dos EUA, por suas corporações e seus capitais. Os colaboradores divergem, no entanto, em várias questões. Uma delas diz respeito a quão longe a rivalidade interimperial persistirá na nova ordem global. Outra é até que ponto a economia dos EUA e a estrutura financeira global liderada pelos EUA são estáveis. Os artigos de Cammarck sobre a América Latina e de Kagarlitsky sobre a Rússia sugerem que há competição e rivalidade significativas entre os EUA e a Europa e que isso implica severos limites à supremacia dos EUA. Os artigos de Panitch e Gindin e Rude sugerem que a economia global dominada pelos EUA e suas estruturas financeiras são tão inerentemente fortes quanto eficientemente enredadas em uma hierarquia financeira global, em cuja estabilidade todos os países capitalistas avançados e suas classes dominantes possuem um interesse coletivo crucial. Os artigos também refletem diferenças de opinião na esquerda sobre a natureza das respostas do neoliberalismo e do domínio estadunidense. No volume atual, as contribuições de Greenfield, Chibber, Zhao e Friedmann apontam para a necessidade de uma análise muito mais radical do neoliberalismo por parte dos movimentos populares anticapitalistas e antiimperialistas, além de uma análise muito mais autocrítica de algumas de suas estratégias. Os artigos de Grahl, Bohle e Deppe desafiam a idéia, popular em alguns setores da esquerda, de que o chamado capitalismo regulado e o internacionalismo baseado em direitos da “Europa social” oferecem uma alternativa mundial e realista à globalização estadunidense. Outro forte tema do presente volume é seu foco na cultura, definida amplamente – da análise de Burstyn sobre a extensão em que mesmo os mais fantásticos elementos dos pesadelos distópicos de Huxley e Orwell acabaram por ser realizados, ou logo o serão, no coração do império; à análise de Forsyth da natureza e do impacto invasivo fenomenal do produto proeminente de Hollywood, a bomba de “ação”; ou às considerações de Zhao sobre o papel desempenhado pela mídia estadunidense na transformação do capitalismo na China. Entre nossos colaboradores do volume deste ano, Varda Burstyn é uma escritora e ativista canadense independente. Stephen Gill e Sam Gindin lecionam ciência política na York University, em Toronto. Christopher Rude, que anteriormente trabalhou para o Federal Reserve Bank de Nova Iorque, acaba de terminar sua tese de doutorado em economia na New School University em Nova Iorque. Scott Forsyth está no Departamento de Filme e Vídeo na York University, e Harriet Friedmann leciona sociologia na Universidade de Toronto. Vivek Chibber é do Departamento de Sociologia da New York University e Gerard Greenfield é colaborador independente, organizador e pesquisador ambiental, que vive em Bangkok. Yuezhi Zhao está na Escola de Comunicação na Simon Fraser University em Vancouver e Patrick Bond é Diretor do Centro para a Sociedade Civil na Universidade de Kwazulu-Natal em Durban. Doug Stokes leciona política internacional na Universidade de Wales, Aberystwyth, e Paul Cammack é Chefe do Departamento de Política e Filosofia na Manchester Metropolitan University. Boris Kagarlitsky é escritor e ativista independente residente em Moscou e John Grahl é Professor de Administração Global de Negócios na London Metropolitan University. Dorothee Bohle está no Departamento de Ciência Política na Universidade da Europa Central em Budapeste e Frank Deppe leciona política na Universidade Marburg na Alemanha. Tony Benn, após cinco décadas como deputado, ministro e proeminente voz da esquerda no Labour Party Britânico, está “livre finalmente”. O Novo Desafio Imperial rapidamente se esgotou e foi reimpresso, pela primeira vez desde 1990, com novas edições estrangeiras sendo iniciadas. Agora, existem distintas edições anuais em inglês publicadas na Índia e Grécia; uma edição coreana foi iniciada com o volume de 2003 e uma edição turca com o volume de 2004; e, também iniciando com o volume de 2004, uma edição em espanhol publicada na América Latina, que será lançada e amplamente distribuída no Fórum Social Mundial em Porto Alegre em janeiro de 2005. A Merlin Press recentemente publicou The Globalization Decade, uma coletânea de dez artigos-chave da Register de 1994 a 2003, editada por Martijn Konings, Alan Zuege e por nós. Alan Zuege também realizou um trabalho de dimensões heróicas como nosso assistente editorial para o volume atual; e Louis McKay mais uma vez desenhou uma capa brilhante. Embalados como larvas em casulos finos, assustadores, observados e oprimidos por simulações das máquinas, os humanos são induzidos a experimentar uma alucinação de existência comum por toda sua vida, uma alucinação criada para assegurar que permaneçam passivos e como um combustível sem resistência para os grandes e onipotentes computadores. Johannes Wilm 3 Abstract Thirty years after redefining the political landscape of Nicaragua, Sandinismo is both a unifying discourse and one driven by different interpretations by adherents. This thesis examines the complex legacy of Sandinismo by focusing on the still widely acclaimed notion of Sandinismo as an idiom of popular participation. The work assesses the functionality and operation, in both Ireland and the US, of Irish culture as a dynamic but discordant friction within the Anglophone world. Ireland’s unique geopolitical position and its religious constitution nurtured an agrarianism that shared its intellectual roots with American republicanism. This study details how the crisis of Irish land invigorated both traditions as an effective oppositional culture to the processes of modernity.
