Practicing Love of God in Medieval Jerusalem, Gaul and Saxony
he collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of TChristian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, reli- gious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the histori- an Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-University Göttingen. This project was running from 2013 to 2018 within the Niedersachsen-Israeli Program and financed by the State of Lower Saxony. Adam and Eve: Shameless First Couple of the Ghent Altarpiece Linda Seidel Jan van Eyck’s depictions of Adam and Eve were marveled at for their lifelikeness before the close of the century in which they were painted, and on subsequent occasions in the following hundred years (Figure 1). Yet interest in their astonishingly realistic anatomy did not engage sustained discussion until the twentieth century, testimony to both the complex history the Ghent Altarpiece experienced during the intervening period and the figures’ particular fall from grace.1 Documents report that the Altarpiece, which from the outset was on restricted view in the private chapel at the Church of St. John for which it had been made, was subject to additional events that impeded its accessibility. These included wars, during which the Altarpiece was dismembered and hidden, and changes in taste that resulted in the removal of the Adam and Eve and their replacement by properly clothed copies (Figure 2).2 Only in the twentieth century, when Jan’s Adam and Eve were placed on public view in independent exhibitions and then returned to their original positions on the reconstructed Altarpiece, did conversation about their remarkable bodies emerge as a topic in the scholarly literature. Kilton, Emeritus ABSTRACT This dissertation examines representations of book collecting by German women in the early modern period in order to explore the role of gender in this activity. Portrayals of book collectors in the modern and early modern eras offer examples of how this identity is constructed, particularly in the underlying assumptions and expectations that determine who is defined as a book collector and what criteria are used to shape that decision. In the case of four early modern women--Elisabeth Sophie Marie of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1683-1767); Elisabeth Ernestine Antonie of Sachsen-Meiningen (1681-1766); Caroline of Ansbach (1683- 1737); and Wilhelmine of Bayreuth (1709-1758)--the act of collecting is depicted as essential to their social status and an integral part of their lives. Finally, in an in-depth case study of an early modern German woman who was a book collector, Sophie of Hanover (1630-1714), this study analyzes how she represented her collecting activities and textual interaction as well as how she is represented in other texts. The way in which these early modern German women were represented and represented themselves as collectors reveals a great deal about the position of women within wider networks concerning the exchange of texts and information. -

The German Library System: structure and new developments Claudia Lux Introduction The Federal Republic of Germany is situated in the centre of Eu- rope. The Republic has sixteen Federal States. Germany’s capital is Berlin. Altogether, there are more than 16,200 communities, including villages, counties, towns and cities, with more than 12,000 public libraries and about 2,000 general research and special libraries. Germany has existed in its present form only since the unification of West Germany and East Germany in 1990. The two very differ- ent states had two very different political systems, one being em- bedded in the Western bloc with the United States and the other within the Eastern bloc with the Soviet Union. This had a great impact on the library system in each part of the country, evident in different classification systems, different types of libraries and library methods. This required a detailed discussion of what realism has meant, especially over the centuries of the second millennium C.E. Then the trends in the painting of water from Cretan and Mycenaean eras, through Hellenistic and Roman landscape, to the limited depiction of landscape in the first millennium of the Common Era, and into the late medieval era and the Renaissance were traced, including a discussion of the theological and philosophical background which led artists to return to their attempts at producing an idealized realism in their illuminations and paintings. -
