Otero∗ July 22, 2019 Trigonometry is concerned with the measurements of angles about a central point (or of arcs of circles centered at that point) and quantities, geometrical and otherwise, that depend on the sizes of such angles (or the lengths of the corresponding arcs). It is one of those subjects that has become a standard part of the toolbox of every scientist and applied mathematician. It is the goal of this project to impart to students some of the story of where and how its central ideas first emerged, in an attempt to provide context for a modern study of this mathematical theory.

He held the Cambridge Society of India Scholarship while at Cambridge University, and was a College Scholar at Peterhouse. During 1966-68 he was a Sloan Foundation Fellow. In 1967, he was awarded the Paul Levy Prize by a Committee of the French Academy of Sciences. At present he is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has been active in mathematical research as well as in mathematics education, and has held visiting positions at many universities in the U.S. and abroad. He has served professionally in several capacities: as Chair of the mathematics of the Committee on Education of the American Mathematical Society, and as a member of several committees of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council. He is also a musician specializing in the Classical Music of India, and is an Adjunct Professor of Music in the School of Music at the University of Washington. The best were Heather Carr with 92.66% (26:59 for W60) and Bob Gardiner 90.31% (29:36 for M75). It was great to see Tony Johnson back in walking mode and doing it in fine style to win the M70 with 30:41. We also welcomed Croatian walker Sasha Radotic, currently in Australia for next weekend's Coburg 24 Hour Run – he took third in the M40 division with 27:15. By reading education in the novels of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Sutton Griggs, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Jessie Redmon Fauset, I reveal an underexplored genealogy of black educational thought from initial calls for educational access to more independent, ideological, and pragmatic modes embodied in the texts of black fiction writers.     he collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of TChristian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, reli- gious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns.     Creole technologies and global histories: rethinking how things travel in space and time By David Edgerton* The Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano once wrote: ‘la diosa tecnología no habla español’ [the Goddess Techno- logy does not speak Spanish].1 Indeed historians of techno- logy in many parts of the world are told the equivalent. Most of us, it is claimed, don’t speak technology; don’t have technology to speak of.2 As I have argued elsewhere, in order to be able to write a history of technology which is both global and historical, and which engages directly with more * Imperial College London.
