We’ll see - I’m time attendees who are now new SHOT members not quite ready to make any promises for – we hope to see you in Minneapolis next Minneapolis. Gif-sur-Yvette, Essonnes, France The C14 dating laboratories of Saclay (Saclay I, 1964 and Saclay II, 1965) and Gif (Gif-sur-Yvette, 1966) have joined together under the name of Gif C14 Dating Laboratory. The first series of dating results appears here with code designation Gif, Sa now being obsolete. Gif laboratory comprises 3 complete routine sets, each equipped with a 1.2 L proportional counter, filled with pure CO2 at 74 cm Hg pres- sure, having backgrounds of 3.40, 2.90 and 1.60 cpm. The first two are of stainless steel and the third is of OFHC copper. In accordance with the decision of the Fifth Radiocarbon Dating Conference, NBS oxalic acid is adopted as modern carbon reference, and the half-life 5570 yr is used for age calculation. Chapter 1 Building a Home for Circumpolar Architecture An Introduction Robert P. Wishart The hearth is at the centre. It is a simple statement with profound implica- tions. As Stephen Pyne (1995: 3) reminds us, humans are ‘uniquely fire creatures on a uniquely fire planet’. And yet the hearth, the place where we ignite and tend to so many of our fires, is not simply a container for, or a site of, this particularity. Take, for example, the hearth as philosophized and mythologized by the ancient Greeks. Hestia, the goddess of the hearth, was also the goddess of the home, architecture and the symbolic and ritual centre of the inhabitants, the ‘oikos’ or household (Vernant 1969: 132). To the ancient Greeks, the hearth, the home and the household were inseparable, and as Carsten (1995b) illustrates, this understanding is not unique to the classical world. The relatedness of the hearth, the home and the household correspond to the complex and creative relatedness inher- ent in kinship.1 But would it be reductive to understand the house as con- tainer for and site of the household, and would it ignore the coextension of the hearth, house and household with the environment and the cosmos? Furthermore, would these reductions also serve to eclipse real lives with representations that might serve other interests? For the collective effort of the authors gathered here, these questions became fundamental to the inquiry about the ways in which the hearth in the circumpolar North is at the centre of something much larger. There are few other places that one could imagine the crucial interde- pendencies and relationships between the hearth, home and household would be as apparent as that in the circumpolar North. -

Romans on the Don Classroom Exercise 3 Jewellery and Baking Bread at Stainton Three archaeological projects were carried out at Holme Hall near Stainton between 1994 and 2005. The first was fieldwalking which identified an area 60 metres by 80 metres in a field where a large amount of Romano-British pottery was found. This led to geophysical survey and excavation of the area. The site was an Iron Age and Romano-British settlement where bread was baked in kilns during the Roman period. Many features were discovered including a ditched enclosure within which were pits, gullies and postholes, and a hearth. Also inside the enclosure was a cobbled area containing burnt river cobbles that may have been heated in a fire for use in cooking, either to roast meat on or to boil water in pots. The cobbles were thrown aside after use. Outside the enclosure were field boundary ditches, pits, the bases of 3 bread ovens, and a waste midden. The ovens showed that the family who lived in the farm baked their own bread. Wood was placed inside and set a light. When the flames had died down to embers, bread was placed inside the kiln on racks to bake. When ready the racks could be taken out without destroying the roof of the oven. Over 1400 fragments of animal bone were discovered on the site, including cattle, sheep and goat bones. Over 5300 sherds of Roman-British pottery were found, most of it dating from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The pottery is mainly from jars and a slight increase in table wares over time may show the adoption of Roman table manners in the 3rd century. -

Historical Patterns in the Scholarship of Technology Transfer BRUCE E. SEELY ABSTRACT This essay is the first in a series authored by each Editor-in-Chief of Comparative Technology Transfer and Society to provide a sense of the scope and range of coverage the journal provides. It offers a historian’s view of the development of the scholarship about technology transfer over the past half centu- ry, interweaving two primary threads. First, it identifies events and circumstances that have influenced and shaped real-world efforts to move technology in its many guises across boundaries—nation- al, geographic, institutional, organizational, social, or otherwise. These historical situations have had a profound impact on the ef- forts of American policymakers and leaders in business, govern- ment, universities, and nongovernmental organizations who deal with technology transfer. These circumstances have produced sig- nificant changes of emphasis in the definition of technology trans- fer at different points in time. Scholars interested in technology transfer have taken their cues from the unfolding events of history, but they have also worked within a variety of disciplinary tradi- tions. The second strand of this essay surveys a number of these disciplinary approaches to the study of technology transfer, with attention to a few principal problems and issues scholars have identified. By connecting historical events and trends within aca- demic disciplines, this essay provides an overview of basic patterns within the scholarship related to technology transfer since 1950. L'histoire des techniques comme champ historiographique Yves Tremblay, étudiant au doctorat Département d'histoire Université Laval La légitimité de l'histoire des techniques est relativement ré cente. Il y a peu d'endroits encore aujourd'hui où elle soit institutionnalisée, sauf peut-être aux États-Unis1 et en Grande-Bretagne. Ses origines directes remontent au XIXe siècle. Quelques techniciens ou ingénieurs écrivaient alors de longs et lourds textes sur la genèse de leur métier, d'une machine ou d'un procédé particulier. Certaines de ces études très « positivistes » sont encore utiles. Par exemple, les travaux des frères Theodor (1839-1917) et Ludwig (1841 -1918) Beck, deux ingénieurs et industriels allemands, sont toujours cités2. Ce pendant, leur influence sur l'histoire générale a été presque nulle. En 1924, un officier français, Richard Lefebvre des Noëttes (1856-1936), publiait un ouvrage sur la force animale à travers les âges. Il le rééditait en 1931 en liant explicitement l'apparition d'un attelage de cheval efficace à la disparition de l'esclavage. En 1932, il publiait un nouvel ouvrage sur l'invention du gouvernail d'étambot. Ces thèses ont vieilli, mais leur parution ne passa pas inaperçue3. La fin des années 1920 est également un tournant aux États-Unis avec la publication du livre d'Abbott Payson Usher (1883-1964) sur l'histoire des inventions mécaniques. Usher y exposait une théorie de l'invention comme processus social, où l'éclair de génie n'est ni plus ni moins important que toute la série de lentes et progressives améliorations4. 238 YVES TREMBLAY Il n'est pas exagéré d'affirmer que l'histoire des techniques a atteint sa légitimité dans le monde francophone avec les Annales.
