CROWN & SHIELD Photo Credit: NASA 2017 | Volume 44, Number 1 VOLUME 44, NUMBER 1 | Fall 2017 Greetings to the Benilde-St. Margaret’s Community, PRESIDENT’S | LETTER Now that leaves have fallen from the trees and the hours of daylight are dwindling, it is time to prepare for the holiday season. Appropriately, with Thanksgiving upon us, an accentuated sense of gratitude seems to permeate our school. Over the past year, Benilde-St. Margaret’s has continued to “develop the student’s highest potential in body, spirit and mind,” and I am most certainly grateful to the wide range of people that make this happen.

The 2017-2018 academic year has started well with our scripture theme guiding our work – “God guides the humble in righteousness and teaches the humble the way,” (Psalm 25:9). As we think about our way, we will be engaging in some important work that is focused on our future. We have begun preparing for Benilde-St. Margaret’s next strategic planning process, which is designed to start late this summer. Learning spaces, primarily classrooms and labs, will also be significantly upgraded. Both of these projects are vital to our future.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s depends on an incredible range of individuals to create and support the distinct education for our students but also to create value for our parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends. In the past year, over 1,500 donors invested in the education of our students. Furthermore, our benefactors across the world have contributed their talent, time, and resources in support of our school’s Catholic mission. That generosity is critical in ensuring the exceptionality of our education, and we A Catholic, college preparatory school, grades 7-12 are absolutely grateful to each of you.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s has hosted Grandparents’ Day for more than 20 years. The annual event has become a cherished tradition for both Red Knights and their grandparents alike. For many, it is an opportunity to reconnect with the broader BSM community, and for others, it is a chance to catch a glimpse of what it means to be a Red Knight.

Herschel Herndon In addition to the school’s excellent leadership, the faculty and staff at Benilde-St. Margaret's continue to inspire me with their dedication and professionalism. Each day, they create an experience that allows our students to Mark Lenss ’74 develop their fullest potential in body, spirit and mind. Their focus on our school’s mission allows Red Knights to become the servant leaders our world needs. Sheila Letscher Past Chair As I reflect on the 2016-2017 year, I know it would not have been possible without the support of our entire Fran McCloskey community. The investment of time, talent and treasure by our parents, alumni, my fellow board members and Treasurer others close to BSM makes a difference. It preserves the legacies of our founding orders and enables us to Penny Meier evolve as we meet the challenges ahead.

Sister Joan Mitchell Thank you for choosing Benilde-St. Margaret’s, and thank you for continuing to support our school. CSJ Representative Because of the community, Red Knights have bright futures ahead of them. Biz McShane Murphy ’96 Sincerely, Tricia Bailey Myhre ’72

Annual Report 2016-2017 | | 41 Annual Report A Knight for All Seasons

Benilde-St. Margaret’s is more than a school; it is a community. Our Knight for All Seasons Auction plays a role in fostering the sense of community and reinforcing the ties between fellow parents, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends of BSM.

Additionally, this event provides vital funds to the school’s operating budget each year. Last year, our Knight for All Seasons Auction provided general operating support for the school as well as tuition assistance for our students.

We are grateful for the individuals and organizations that contributed to making our evening such a success.
