Bodice The top part of a woman’s dress. It was tight and stiff which made it hard to breathe. Bombast Padding made from horsehair or wool. Used to stuff the front of men's jackets and trunk hose. Breeches Short trousers. Cod piece Used to fasten the front of the hose if no breeches were worn. Became a fashion item and was stuffed for effect! Coif A linen hat worn to keep the hair clean and show respect to God. It was worn under other hats and removed in the presence of your betters. Doublet A jacket for a man which fitted tightly and often had detachable sleeves. Farthingale A frame of hoops made from wood to hold out rich ladies’ dresses. They became so big that ladies couldn’t get through doors. Hose A man’s leg coverings, similar to tights but made out of wool. Rich people wore silk hose. Trunk hose Short leggings, puffed out with stuffing and worn on top of hose. Kirtle A long dress with detachable sleeves. Neckerchief A cloth worn around a woman’s neck. Pattens Wood and iron shoes to protect a lady from dirty floors and streets. Petticoat A skirt made out of wool. Peascod A heavily padded doublet worn by men at the end of Elizabeth’s reign. Some were so stiff that the men couldn’t bend. Robe A long cloak-like coat worn by business men. It showed that you were not a labourer and kept you warm. Ruff A frill worn around the neck, made of folded linen or cotton which had been starched. Stomacher A long stiffened front of a dress, fashionable at the end of Elizabeth’s reign. Swaddling Bandage-like cloth used to wrap up small babies.
