In December 2004 a local family donated a cream silk slashed doublet to Perth Museum and Art Gallery.i Stylistically the doublet is given a date between 1620 and 1630 but the family story is that it was a gift to one of their ancestors about the time of the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689. -

Albs, Advent, and White Supremacy; or, Why the worship leaders have not been wearing those long white robes Kathleen O’Keefe Reed October 16, 2019 At the beginning of Advent, 2016, I wrote the following to explain why I and other worship leaders were not wearing albs. That practice continues, with the exception of “high holy days,” like Christmas and Easter. Here’s what I said back then: Those robes, called albs derived from tunica alba meaning “white tunic,” were the standard business suit of professional Roman men in the early centuries of the Common Era. The alb did not become the go-to Christian priestly garb until the beginning of the 5th Century. “For example, in a transitional stage, Jerome, (341-420), distinguishes between everyday clothing and a special ‘suit of clean clothes for wear in church…”” writes J.G. Davies in A Dictionary of Liturgy and Worship, p. 367, Macmillan,1972. Davies goes on to say that “all ranks of clergy wore the plain alb until the eleventh century.” After that, albs were by turns, more or less plain. Davies, writing in the 1970’s, concludes that up to present day the alb “is to be thought of as the archetypal ‘white robe’ of Christianity.’” Just as Davies’ tome went to print in 1972, a liturgical renewal in the American Lutheran church was gearing up. The centrality of the baptismal font as lifelong source of identity rather than ticket to heaven got heightened. Weekly Eucharist became the norm. The new green Lutheran Book of Worship reflected these renewed priorities, so the church shopped its closet for new-old symbolism. -

The response often returned when raising this issue with various members of the Catholic clergy is: ‘well, that would be a Protestant prac- tice.’ This apparent association of academic dress with the Protestant denominations seems to have led to the total abandonment of academic dress amongst the clergy and laity of the Catholic Church. -

On the Concepts of 'Sovereign' and 'Great' Orders
ON THE CONCEPTS OF ‘SOVEREIGN’ AND ‘GREAT’ ORDERS Antti Matikkala The only contemporary order of knighthood to include the word ‘sovereign’ in its name is the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta. Sovereignty is here heraldically exemplified by the Grand Master’s use of the closed crown. Its Constitutional Charter and Code explains that the order ‘be- came sovereign on the islands of Rhodes and later of Malta’, and makes the follow- ing statement about its sovereignty: ‘The Order is a subject of international law and exercises sovereign functions.’1 However, the topic of this article is not what current scholarship designates as military-religious orders of knighthood, or simply military orders, but monarchical orders. To quote John Anstis, Garter King of Arms,2 a monarchical order can be defined in the following terms: a Brotherhood, Fellowship, or Association of a certain Number of actual Knights; sub- jected under a Sovereign, or Great Master, united by particular Laws and Statutes, peculiar to that Society, not only distinguished by particular Habits, Ensigns, Badges or Symbols, which usually give Denomination to that Order; but having a Power, as Vacancies happen in their College, successively, of nominating, or electing proper Per- sons to succeed, with Authority to assemble, and hold Chapters. The very concept of sovereignty is ambiguous. A recent collection of essays has sought to ‘dispel the illusion that there is a single agreed-upon concept of sovereignty for which one could offer of a clear definition’.3 To complicate the issue further, historical and theoretical discussions on sovereignty, including those relating to the Order of Malta, concentrate mostly on its relation to the modern concept of state, leaving the supposed sovereignty of some of the monarchical orders of knighthood an unexplored territory. -

The Shape of Women: Corsets, Crinolines & Bustles – c. 1790-1900 1790-1809 – Neoclassicism In the late 18th century, the latest fashions were influenced by the Rococo and Neo-classical tastes of the French royal courts. Elaborate striped silk gowns gave way to plain white ones made from printed cotton, calico or muslin. The dresses were typically high-waisted (empire line) narrow tubular shifts, unboned and unfitted, but their minimalist style and tight silhouette would have made them extremely unforgiving! Underneath these dresses, the wearer would have worn a cotton shift, under-slip and half-stays (similar to a corset) stiffened with strips of whalebone to support the bust, but it would have been impossible for them to have worn the multiple layers of foundation garments that they had done previously. What was so shocking to the Regency sense of prudery was the novelty of a dress made of such transparent material as to allow a “liberal revelation of the human shape” compared to what had gone before, when the aim had been to conceal the figure. Women adopted split-leg drawers, which had previously been the preserve of men, and subsequently pantalettes (pantaloons), where the lower section of the leg was intended to be seen, which was deemed even more shocking! On a practical note, wearing a short sleeved thin muslin shift dress in the cold British climate would have been far from ideal, which gave way to a growing trend for wearing stoles, capes and pelisses to provide additional warmth.
