An internationally distinguished researcher and transformative higher education leader, Satish K. Tripathi, PhD, was appointed the 15th president of the on April 18, 2011. Tripathi, who served as UB’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs from 2004-11, has led the university in achieving significant growth in research activity, enhanced student quality and diversity, and an expanded international presence. As president, he is committed to building on this strong foundation, moving UB into the highest ranks of the nation’s leading research universities. Tripathi served as dean of the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California-Riverside from 1997-2004. Previously, he spent 19 years as a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, and held visiting professorships at the University of Paris-Sud in France and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. The first international-born president in UB’s history, he graduated at the top of his class from Banaras Hindu University Satish K. Tripathi in India and holds a doctorate in computer science from the University of Toronto, as well as three master’s degrees—one President in computer science from the University of Toronto and two in statistics from the University of Alberta and Banaras Hindu University. A fellow of the IEEE and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he was awarded the honorary doctorate of science from the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad. An active leader in the national higher education community, Tripathi serves on the board of directors of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. He was appointed by Gov. Cuomo as co-chair of the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council.

Liesl Folks, PhD, MBA, dean of UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is an internationally recognized expert in nanotechnology and magnetism. She holds 12 U.S. patents and is the author of more than 50 peer-reviewed technical publications. She is also a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Folks served as president of the IEEE’s Magnetics Society (2013/2014) and was a member of a congressionally mandated panel for the Triennial Review of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, facilitated by the National Academy of Sciences, in 2012. She has an exemplary record of support for STEM education initiatives, from her promotion of innovative programs at the PreK-12 level, to her role in launching a magnetics summer school program through the IEEE, which provides summer study opportunities each year to nearly 100 graduate students from around the world. In 2013, Folks was recognized for her mentorship of science and engineering students with the national AVS Excellence in Leadership Award. Liesl Folks Prior to arriving at UB in January of 2012, Folks worked for more than nine years at Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Dean of the School of a hard disk drive company in San Jose, California. Before that, she worked at IBM Almaden Research Center, also in San Engineering and Applied Jose, for six years. Sciences A native of Australia, Folks earned a BSc (1989) and a PhD (1994), both in physics, from The University of Western Australia in Perth, where she subsequently worked as a research fellow. She also holds an MBA from Cornell University (2004).

COMMENCEMENT 2015 23 History of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

In celebrating this commencement, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) marks over a half-century of educational and research excellence and service to the technical community, to New York State, and to society at large.

The Founding of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Faculty and Leadership: A Heritage of Vision and Talent Engineering courses were initially offered by the College of Arts and Sciences, SEAS has enjoyed consistent success in large part because of its leadership. Over which began granting a Certificate in Engineering in 1929. Early programs were the course of its sixty-plus years, twelve distinguished educators have served as established in engineering science, mechanical engineering, industrial leaders of the school. In 1946, Paul E. Mohn became the first dean. His thirteen- engineering and electrical engineering. Then in 1946, one hundred years after year tenure as dean lent stability to the young school. Frederick H. Thomas the University at Buffalo was founded, the School of Engineering was served as acting dean from 1959–60. E. Arthur Trabant was dean from established. The school was authorized to offer both bachelors and masters 1960–1966; Howard E. Strauss was acting dean from 1966–67. When the degrees. Departments of civil engineering and chemical engineering were added Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences became the administrative body of in 1958 and 1961, respectively. In 1962, the university joined the State engineering at SUNY Buffalo, the head of the faculty was often referred to as the University of New York (SUNY) higher education system and by 1967, the provost. F. Karl Willenbrock was provost from 1967–70; Joseph Bergantz was name had been changed to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences. acting provost from 1970–71; and William Gill served as provost/dean from One year later, aerospace engineering was added, and a comprehensive 1971–1977. George C. Lee took office as dean in 1978, and served in that post engineering school was achieved. An undergraduate program in engineering until 1995. In 1996, Mark H. The school has Today's graduates join the ranks of over 25,000 alumni who have made their always valued interdisciplinary research and has structured itself to promote mark on the discipline, both in the academic world and in industry. Graduates connections across disciplines that benefit undergraduate and graduate study, live in 50 states and 65 countries around the world. as well as to address important social needs like health care, personal security Like any great organization, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is and recovery from natural disasters. SEAS is the home of such prominent continually evolving and stretching to meet new challenges. The more we interdisciplinary research and educational programs as UB’s Center for achieve, the more we see that needs to be done to rise to the challenge of Engineering Design and Applied Simulation (formerly NYSCEDII), Center for training the next generation of great engineers while delivering world-changing Multi-source Information Fusion (CMIF), Center for Unified Biometrics advances in science and technology. Education (CEISARE), and The Center for Industrial Effectiveness (TCIE), as well as a membership in the National Science Foundation Center for e-Design. More recently, we have engaged with our campus colleagues to develop research and educational programs under UB’s “E Fund” initiative, which supports programs that will have a high impact both inside and outside the university. These include Computational Data Science and Engineering (CSDE), Home Health and Well-Being through Adaptive Smart Environments (Home-BASE), Institute of Bridge Engineering (IBE), and Institute of Sustainable Transportation and Logistics (ISTL). Our total research expenditures for the academic year 2012–2013 were $60 million. Historically, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences' partnership with industry has been valuable and mutually rewarding. Students benefit from the professional interactions that our experiential learning programs provide, and faculty contribute to and gain valuable perspective from industry-sponsored research. Industry partners, meanwhile, benefit from access to a talented workforce and a well-trained knowledge base that provides them with a competitive edge in research and development.
