SOLICITOR GENERAL THEODORE OLSON TO GIVE UM LECTURE
MISSOULA-
The University of Montana School of Law will host Solicitor General Theodore Olson when he speaks at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Montana Theatre.
Olson, the United States’ 42nd solicitor general , will give the next installment in the
William B. Jones and Judge Edward A. Tamm Judicial Lecture Series. His lecture is titled
"Marbury v. Madison - 200th Anniversary" and is free and open to the public.
The series is presented by UM’s law school to enhance understanding of the judicial system. Previous speakers have included justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Clarence Thomas.
Breyer was nominated for his position by President Bush in 2001.
Born in Chicago, Olson was educated at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., before earning his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
He was a partner in the Los Angeles office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where he practiced constitutional, media, commercial and appellate litigation, before serving President
Reagan as assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel from 1981 to 1984. After completing his service in that role, Olson returned to Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in its
Washington, D.C., office, to practice constitutional and appellate litigation.
He has argued 32 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including constitutional and federal statutory cases involving copyright law, school vouchers, the Internet, the 2000 census,

property rights, telecommunications, criminal law, immigration, voting rights, equal protection
and the First Amendment.
Before rejoining the Justice Department in 2001, he successfully represented presidential candidate George W. Bush and vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney in the Supreme Court
Bush v. Gore cases involving the 2000 election.
The Jones-Tamm Lecture Series honors the memory of two former Montanans who had distinguished careers on the federal bench. Both Jones and Tamm were trial judges on the U.S.
District Court for the District of Columbia; Tamm also served on the D.C. Circuit Court of
Appeals. The two judges had strong ties to Montana and its law school.
