Some Priest Assignment Updates in Deanery 7

I thought you might like to know of the priest personnel changes that are taking place effective July st1 here in Deanery 7. The parishes of Deanery 7 are: St. , St. Edward the , Mission San Juan Ca- pistrano, Our Lady of Fatima, Holy Trinity, Corpus Christi, and St. Timothy.

St. Catherine of Siena: Father Jaime Hernandez Diaz, O.F.M. will com- ing as parochial vicar from Blessed Sacrament in .

St. Edward the Confessor: Father Philip Smith becomes Pastor (instead of Administrator), Father Tony Park moves to St. John Neumann in Irvine as parochial vicar; Father Squillacioti returns from Rome to be parochial vic- ar.

Mission San Juan Capistrano: Father Sergio Ramos leaves to become Administrator at St. Justin Parish in Anaheim; Father Manuel Lopez Gonzalez comes from St. Justin Martyr in Anaheim to be parochial vicar.

Our Lady of Fatima: Father Sal Landa leaves to become parochial vicar at St. Boniface, and Father Bill Barman comes to serve as Senior Priest.

Holy Trinity: Father Reynold Furrell (founding Pastor) leaves to become Pastor of Sts. Simon and Jude Parish in Huntington Beach; Father John Nguyen leaves to become parochial vicar at Holy Spirit in Fountain Valley. Father St. Paul leaves St. in Stanton to become Pastor of Holy Trinity. Father Charles Tran (currently at St. Norbert in Orange) will join him as parochial vicar.

Corpus Christi: no changes.

St. Timothy: Father Joseph Truong leaves us to become parochial vicar at St. Boniface in Anaheim. Father Evan Simington of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter will serve here as part time parochial vicar, and as Administrator of St. John Henry Newman Parish of the Ordinariate of St. Peter.

A Reflection on Words of Comfort We could use a few these days. Words that give hope and courage during times of fear, anger and sadness. Here are two. The first was given by an English woman who lived in the 14th century. At some point in her life she became an anchoress, con- fined to a cell attached to the Church of Julian in Norwich, . Known to us today as Jul- ian of Norwich, she experienced a number of mysti- cal visions and conversations with God (she called them “showings”) and was inspired to write them down. This is probably her best known: God said, “It is necessary that sin should exist, but all will be well, and all will be well, and every manner of thing will be well.” The second is from the 16th century Spanish saint, Teresa of Avila, whose counsel was Let noth- ing disturb you. Let nothing make you afraid. All things are passing. God alone never changes. Pa- tience gains all things. If you have God you will want for nothing. God alone suffices. Now, talk is cheap, as they say, and a pious affir- mation may not mean much unless it was uttered by someone who had walked the walk. In the case of Julian, not much is known about her early life, but the life she ultimately chose was a hard one. Eng- land was a place of gloom and doom, poverty and hunger. and France had begun what would become the Hundred Years War and the Black Death was ravaging Europe. Julian would have witnessed the death of many loved ones. Yet if you read her descriptions of God’s “showings,” you won’t find a word about condemnation or about hell’s fire or about a vengeful God. As for Teresa, a wonderful, earthy and coura- geous woman, she was born just in time to experi- ence the Protestant Reformation, the Counter- Reformation and the Spanish Inquisition. When she undertook a mission to reform her own convent and to rid other religious communities of corruption, she incurred the wrath of the ruling elite, both secular and ecclesiastical. Several times she was reported to the Inquisition. Teresa’s health was poor as well, and she suffered from malarial fever, headaches and seizures. Yet she wrote, “If you have God you will want for nothing.” Julian and Teresa walked the walk, and their words of comfort may be trusted. But even more trustworthy, to people of faith, are the words of the risen Christ, recorded in the very last sentence of the Gospel of Matthew: And behold, I am with you al- ways, until the end of the age.
