October 14, 2018 Page 3 The Solemnity of our Patron Saint Edward the Confessor This weekend we celebrate the solemnity of St. Edward the Confessor, our patron saint. A parish’s patronal feast is one of the most important and solemn days in the life of a parish. Normally celebrated on October 13th, Bishop Vann has granted us permission to transfer the feast to this Sunday of Ordinary Time in order to foster greater awareness and veneration of St. Edward who intercedes for us. St. Edward is the perfect intercessor for our parish. He was a grateful and generous steward of the gifts and respon- sibilities which God entrusted to him. Edward devoted his life to prayer and serving his people, particularly the poor. As such, he exemplifies and embodies all that is a House of Prayer and a House of the Poor. Edward the Confessor was born in Islip, near Oxford, probably in 1005. He was the son of King Ethelred the Un- ready and his Norman queen, Emma. The family spent several years in exile in Normandy after the Danish invasion of 1013. While in exile, Edward vowed that he would make a pilgrimage to St Peter's in Rome if he managed to re- turn safely to his kingdom. In 1042, the Viking dynasty died out and Edward was able to return to England and was elected King. The Life of St. Edward Edward found it impossible to leave his subjects and make the pilgrimage to Rome as he had vowed. Therefore, the Pope released him from his vow on the condition he founded a monastery and dedicated it to St Peter. In accord- ance with the Pope's wishes, Edward built a new cathedral in Norman style to replace the Saxon church at Westmin- ster. The cathedral became known as Westminster Abbey. Edward also made a promise of chastity and remained celibate even after his marriage to Edith, the daughter of one of his closest advisors. Edward the Confessor was a deeply religious man. Some called him the monk-king since he prayed frequently and attended Mass every day. Unlike many kings, Edward was hailed throughout his life as a gentle, loyal and devoted king who resisted war and promoted peace. Edward the Confessor died on January 5, 1066, was canonized in 1161, and his body was transferred to a shrine at Westminster Abbey in 1163. Edward was an enigmatic figure who was believed to have the power to heal. He began the royal custom of touching ill people to cure them. In the centuries that followed, many sick people came to kneel at the shrine and ask to be healed. Richard II prayed there too, asking for strength before the Peasants' Revolt in 1381. The tradition continued for nearly 700 years until the reign of Queen Anne. St. Edward's Sapphire The St Edward's Sapphire is a sapphire and one of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. It gets its name from Edward the Confessor who wore the stone in his ring. The blue stones on the front of our tabernacle link us to our patron saint and encourage us to imitate his devotion to the Eucharist and the poor.

    St. Edward the Confessor Feast: October 13 Facts Feast Day: October 13 Edward the Confessor was the son of King Ethelred III and his Norman wife, Emma, daughter of Duke Richard I of Normandy. He was born at Islip, England, and sent to Normandy with his mother in the year 1013 when the Danes under Sweyn and his son Canute invaded England. Canute remained in England and the year after Ethelred's death in 1016, married Emma, who had returned to England, and became King of England. Edward remained in Normandy, was brought up a Norman, and in 1042, on the death of his half-brother, Hardicanute, son of Canute and Emma, and largely through the support of the powerful Earl Godwin, he was acclaimed king of England. In 1044, he married Godwin's daughter Edith. His reign was a peaceful one characterized by his good rule and remission of odious taxes, but also by the struggle, partly caused by his natural inclination to favor the Normans, between Godwin and his Saxon supporters and the Norman barons, including Robert of Jumieges, whom Edward had brought with him when he returned to England and whom he named Archbishop of Canterbury in 1051. In the same year, Edward banished Godwin, who took refuge in Flanders but returned the following year with a fleet ready to lead a rebellion. Armed revolt was avoided when the two men met and settled their differences; among them was the Archbishop of Canterbury, which was resolved when Edward replaced Robert with Stigand, and Robert returned to Normandy.

Goscelin was a renowned writer of Anglo-Saxon saints’ lives. Through his hagiographies he not only created images of England’s Christian past that emphasized its pious, sophisticated rulers and close ties to the papacy, he engaged in political commentary and criticism.

ABSTRACT This thesis charts the history of the cult of St Æthelthryth of Ely, arguing that its longevity and geographical extent were determined by the malleability of her character, as narrated within the hagiographical texts of her life, and the continued promotion of her shrine by parties interested in utilising her saintly power to achieve their goals. Arranged chronologically and divided into five distinct periods, the thesis demonstrates that this symbiotic relationship was key in maintaining and elongating the life of the cult. Employing digital humanities tools to analyse textual, archaeological, material, cartographic, and documentary sources covering the cult’s eight-hundred-year history, the study charts its development firstly within East Anglia, and subsequently across the whole country, and internationally.

    77 Who Wrote the Nun's Life of Edward? 1 Jane Bliss University ofOxford This article examines the identity of the Nun of Barking, aut~or of an Anglo­ Norman Life of Edward the Confessor; and addresses three questions. The flrst is about the Nun's audience; the poem's destination is a vital element in discussion of the author's identity, and of the quality of her authorship. Next, I examine the available evidence for sources other than Aelred's Vita; the Nun's work has sometimes been regarded as a mere copy: 'a translation from start to flnish'. 3 My title focuses on 'writing' in the sense of 'authorship', because the Nun adapts her material so extensively that she can claim to be the author, not merely the translator, of her Edward. Lastly, to establish whether the Nun was identical with Clemence of Barking, author of the Life of Saint Catherine (of Alexandria),' I analyse both poems. My study draws upon a body of recent scholarship on women's writing, and on AnglO-Norman language and literatureS The Nun's poem is a key text for a recent study of early mysticism;' this aspect of her work has therefore been discussed elsewhere, as has her pioneering use of the term 'fln' amor', and the enhanced role of Edith, Edward's queen.' Earlier scholars' neglect of the poem may be because some perceived it as a slavish translation, or because it suffered in comparison with the freer (later) version by Matthew Paris' Laurent thinks Matthew wanted to suppress it,' but there is no evidence that Matthew did any such thing: the Nun's work survives in three manuscripts, and a fragment.
