In this case, the Church has consistently taught what has been understood from the beginning, that Mary is the evervirgin Mother of God, meaning that she had no other children than R.C.I.Y.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Jesus according to the flesh. From the early Fathers of the Young Adults): Church, like St. Polycarp (a disciple of St. John) down to St. John Paul II in our own age, the faithful have perceived that “Mary wished to be always and in all things ‘given to God,’ High School students who are behind in their living in virginity.” Sacraments or are looking to learn more about The reference to the “brothers” and “sisters” of Jesus in their faith are today’s Gospel, as well as in a handful of other places in the invited to join New Testament, is a translation into English of the Greek word adelphos. That word has a broader meaning that merely “full focuses on their blood brother,” and includes more extended kinship like journey with a cousins, uncles, and nephews. In fact, St. Mark later writes that two who are called “brother” (adelphos), James and group made up Joses, were the sons of a different Mary, who was present at of their peers. There is much more we could say about Jesus’ relatives than can fit into a single bulletin column. I’d offer just two points, then, to close. First, the identity of Jesus’ brothers and sisters is an example of how we can trust the settled, clear teaching of the Church even when a first, cursory glance may raise a question. The THE FILIPINO MASS HAS A NEW Church’s dogmas, doctrines, and teachings are a gift, not a hindrance, which allow us to see farther and more clearly than TIME!! those who will not trust in them. Second, we need never fear to admit when we have questions Please join us on the 3rd Sunday of every month about our faith and seek out answers. The key is to trust God at 1:30pm for the rosary, Mass and a potluck to at the outset, trust that He has spoken the full truth in Christ and through the Church, and then proceed in confidence that follow. He will satisfy our desire to understand more deeply, because Our next Mass will be on July 15th! All are wel- He Himself is the Truth. (John 14:6) come!!! • St. Edward the Confessor Feast: October 13
St. Edward the Confessor Feast: October 13 Facts Feast Day: October 13 Edward the Confessor was the son of King Ethelred III and his Norman wife, Emma, daughter of Duke Richard I of Normandy. He was born at Islip, England, and sent to Normandy with his mother in the year 1013 when the Danes under Sweyn and his son Canute invaded England. Canute remained in England and the year after Ethelred's death in 1016, married Emma, who had returned to England, and became King of England. Edward remained in Normandy, was brought up a Norman, and in 1042, on the death of his half-brother, Hardicanute, son of Canute and Emma, and largely through the support of the powerful Earl Godwin, he was acclaimed king of England. In 1044, he married Godwin's daughter Edith. His reign was a peaceful one characterized by his good rule and remission of odious taxes, but also by the struggle, partly caused by his natural inclination to favor the Normans, between Godwin and his Saxon supporters and the Norman barons, including Robert of Jumieges, whom Edward had brought with him when he returned to England and whom he named Archbishop of Canterbury in 1051. In the same year, Edward banished Godwin, who took refuge in Flanders but returned the following year with a fleet ready to lead a rebellion. Armed revolt was avoided when the two men met and settled their differences; among them was the Archbishop of Canterbury, which was resolved when Edward replaced Robert with Stigand, and Robert returned to Normandy.

In it, I study the hagiographies written about the royal female saints of Ely by the Flemish monk Goscelin of Saint-Bertin in the late eleventh century as a form of postcolonial literature and memory creation. Goscelin was a renowned writer of Anglo-Saxon saints’ lives. Through his hagiographies he not only created images of England’s Christian past that emphasized its pious, sophisticated rulers and close ties to the papacy, he engaged in political commentary and criticism.

The Parish Church of SAINT EDWARD THE CONFESSOR Burgess Hill Building a Community of God’s People in the Power of the Holy Spirit Sunday 13th July 2014 THE FEAST OF DEDICATION (Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time) 6.00 p.m. (Saturday evening) Vigil Mass 10.00 a.m. PARISH MASS with Kidz Zone Today, we give thanks and praise to God for His faithfulness to us, as a church, over these past 46 years, and especially for our church here and now. God has been gracious to us over all these years, giving growth in our church today, and setting before us a vision for the future. We are glad that we can come to this church of bricks and mortar and meet the Lord here in prayer. But we ourselves are living stones in the church of Christ our Lord, whose body we are. The Bible says “Here God lives among his people. He lives among them and he will be their God “God with us”. This is said about US – God’s people! We are that temple in whom God lives, both as members of Jesus’ body and as a living Christian community. Let us give thanks for St. Edward’s Church, but above all, let us live out our calling to BE the living presence of Christ in our Parish and community. Tea and Coffee is served in the Church Hall after the Parish Mass. Do please stay, if you can, and share in this time of fellowship together. – EVERYONE WELCOME! The Barbeque: The Parish Barbeque to celebrate this special day of Dedication will take place after coffee in the Hall.

The Parish Church of SAINT EDWARD THE CONFESSOR, BURGESS HILL Building a Community of God’s People in the Power of the Holy Spirit We are an Anglican Church (Church of England) that seeks to be… • Catholic in the way we express our faith. • Charismatic in seeking to be gifted by the Holy Spirit • Contemporary in our style of worship • Committed to exploring God’s word in the scriptures • Concerned to share the healing love of Jesus with all. Sunday 24th June 2018 THE BIRTH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST 10.00 a.m. PARISH MASS with Kidz Zone with the Ministry of Prayer for Healing & Wholeness Luke begins his Gospel by describing an aged, devout, childless couple, the priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth. As Zechariah is serving in the Temple, he sees the angel Gabriel, who tells him that he and his wife will have a son who will be a great prophet, and will go before the Lord "like Elijah." (The Jewish tradition had been that Elijah would herald the coming of the Messiah = Christ = Anointed = Chosen of God.) Zechariah went home, and his wife conceived. About six months later, Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary, a kinswoman of Elizabeth, and told her that she was about to bear a son who would be called Son of the Most High, a king whose kingdom would never end. Thus, Elizabeth gave birth to John, and Mary gave birth six months later to Jesus. Welcome to everyone gathered here at St. Edward’s this morning Today, we welcome James Taylor, a student at St.

THE STORY OF AN ENGLISH SAINT’S CULT: AN ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF ST ÆTHELTHRYTH OF ELY, c.670 – c.1540 by IAN DAVID STYLER A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham August 2019 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT This thesis charts the history of the cult of St Æthelthryth of Ely, arguing that its longevity and geographical extent were determined by the malleability of her character, as narrated within the hagiographical texts of her life, and the continued promotion of her shrine by parties interested in utilising her saintly power to achieve their goals. Arranged chronologically and divided into five distinct periods, the thesis demonstrates that this symbiotic relationship was key in maintaining and elongating the life of the cult. Employing digital humanities tools to analyse textual, archaeological, material, cartographic, and documentary sources covering the cult’s eight-hundred-year history, the study charts its development firstly within East Anglia, and subsequently across the whole country, and internationally.

  • Who Wrote the Nun's Life of Edward? 1
77 Who Wrote the Nun's Life of Edward? 1 Jane Bliss University ofOxford This article examines the identity of the Nun of Barking, aut~or of an Anglo Norman Life of Edward the Confessor; and addresses three questions. The flrst is about the Nun's audience; the poem's destination is a vital element in discussion of the author's identity, and of the quality of her authorship. Next, I examine the available evidence for sources other than Aelred's Vita; the Nun's work has sometimes been regarded as a mere copy: 'a translation from start to flnish'. 3 My title focuses on 'writing' in the sense of 'authorship', because the Nun adapts her material so extensively that she can claim to be the author, not merely the translator, of her Edward. Lastly, to establish whether the Nun was identical with Clemence of Barking, author of the Life of Saint Catherine (of Alexandria),' I analyse both poems. My study draws upon a body of recent scholarship on women's writing, and on AnglO-Norman language and literatureS The Nun's poem is a key text for a recent study of early mysticism;' this aspect of her work has therefore been discussed elsewhere, as has her pioneering use of the term 'fln' amor', and the enhanced role of Edith, Edward's queen.' Earlier scholars' neglect of the poem may be because some perceived it as a slavish translation, or because it suffered in comparison with the freer (later) version by Matthew Paris' Laurent thinks Matthew wanted to suppress it,' but there is no evidence that Matthew did any such thing: the Nun's work survives in three manuscripts, and a fragment.
