From Fr. Mike’s Desk

Today the Book of Wisdom tells us that death does and the words used in the anointing are: Through this not come from God, and that God does not rejoice in holy anointing may the Lord in His love and mercy death. According to ancient Jewish Tradition, death help you and heal you through the power of the Holy and illness came about because of sin and the work of Spirit (this is said while the person’s forehead is the devil. For if sin did not enter the human family as a anointed). May the Lord who frees you from sin save result of the sin of and Eve, we would have died you and raise you up again (this is said while the in a pleasant way and we would pass from our side of person’s hands are being anointed). This Sacrament the Kingdom to God’s side without pain or fear. As a was never intended to be a sacrament reserved only for consequence of sin, death is sometimes painful, usually the end of life, somehow that became the practice feared, and many certainly want to avoid it. While during the late Middle Ages, and it stayed that way today we know that physical death and illness are not a right up to the Second Vatican Council. The Council result of people’s sins or their relatives’ sins. Illness Fathers restored the Sacrament to its proper place, and and faith are nonetheless tied together in today’s it once more took on the name of the Anointing of the Gospel. Jarius came to Jesus because his daughter was sick ing). This Sacrament is to be received by anyone and dying. He asked Jesus to heal her and Jesus suffering from serious illness, about to undergo without pausing for a minute goes to heal his sick surgery, or suffering from the effects of old age. It is child. On the way there, the woman who was suffering not reserved solely for those who are about to die, and with a hemorrhage comes up to Jesus, touches Him and one can receive it more than once in a lifetime. In fact, she is totally cured. We are told that she went to many one can receive it more than once during the doctors and they could not find a cure. One might occurrence of the same illness or condition. This think that she would have given up all hope, but she Sacrament is not to be taken lightly and it is not to does not, and she believes that Jesus can heal her. So be used for something minor or short term, and in strong is her faith that she believes that she does not no way is it to replace the Sacrament of Reconciliation. even have to ask for a cure, just touch His cloak. She was right, for she was healed, and the second Jesus From last week, Mark has Jesus sleeping on a cushion realizes it He turns around looking for the person who in the stern because that is the place of honor and only touched Him. However, when He spots her, as she very important persons rate a cushion. gave herself up, Jesus does not scold her, but says to God bless you always! the woman that her faith has saved her. Jarius likewise has this faith in Jesus that is why he sought Jesus out.

Death does not come from God, and as we see in the Fr. Mike rest of the Gospel account, death is not stronger than God, as Jesus brings the little girl back to life. Many times, when illness attacks, we sometimes give into Prayer to St. Michael fear and anger. We may even believe that God has abandoned us or a loved one, (as some may believe St. Michael the , defend us in battle, during the past year and maybe even now) but this is be our protection against the wickedness and not true. We should do the same thing for we have it a little better than Jarius and the woman, for we too have Jesus and all He Next Week’s Readings does for us, and we have the Holy Spirit to help us get passed all fear and anger. Fr. Mike’s Letter for Week 66 of the Corona Virus Crisis

The following letter was posted last week, prior to The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time, on the St. Edward’s website as well as on Flocknote.

We are rapidly approaching the last day of school. And I am sure that many a young person is dancing in the streets (at least in their minds). This was one of my favorite days of the year, and one could look forward to a nice long summer vacation. Of course, I knew the summer would bring along with it several projects and work that had to be done at home, but at least there was no homework, test, or pressure from the teachers. However, as I got older, I realized that I would have to make major changes in my life.

The first change was getting a to help me pay for college, and the second was which college should I attend. I had to decide if I would stay locally or go away! That question was answered quickly, as I realized if I did not go to work, I could not go to college, so I studied locally. I was able to enjoy all the comforts of home, which were not always so comfortable, yet it provided me a place to stay, eat and study.

I know that these types of questions are in the minds of all our graduating Seniors. By now most have decided what they want to do post High School, but as we all know, approaching something new is always uneasy, even if we are looking forward to the change. However, do not be preoccupied with fear or other doubts, because God is always with you to help you in your lifelong decisions. Jesus said many times’ “Fear is useless, what is necessary is trust.” So, follow Jesus’ advice and congratulations on your graduation. This wish also goes out to all our college grads, may God always bless you and guide you as you make your decisions on how you will live out your life and how you will form your future.

To all of you entering High School in September enjoy these next four years, they can be demanding, but they also offer so many different types of opportunities. Learn as much as you can, trust me I wish that I had paid more attention in high school. We have just gone through hopefully, the most difficult time to live in, and we survived. Yes, we have endured many restrictions and we may have also lost loved ones, but we still carry on. If you can get through these times and make the best of them, you can get through anything!

Happy Summer and Congratulations to all our grads. Also, Happy Father’s Day to all our fathers and those who serve as Fathers.
