Wave of the Future Social Media Social media has taken on a tremendous role in our lives. We’ve watched news go viral in a matter of seconds, while software behind-the-scenes records every “like” and comment so that advertisers can reach us more effectively. So, what does the future hold? Facebook’s developments in 2017 may give us a hint: Earlier this year, researchers at Facebook experimented with chatbots, computer programs that simulate conversations with humans, to see whether they could negotiate. If they can, they offer us more personalized “digital assistance” than even Siri or Alexa, meaning they can understand our requests more easily and respond with information with greater accuracy. To get bots to negotiate, researchers programmed them to trade virtual objects--balls, books, and hats-- using scripts of human language. Interestingly, after “negotiating” possible trades like “one book for two balls,” the bots began doing something the researchers didn’t anticipate. They deviated from the scripts and used a sort of shorthand. Many more experiments are required before this technology is ready for us to use, but we can see that Facebook is on its way toward becoming a leader in the digital assistance industry. Also this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook’s new mission statement. Instead of just connecting friends and family, Facebook wants to “bring the world closer together” by building “meaningful” communities, exposing individuals to new perspectives, and helping everyone find common ground. Could this new mission statement correspond to users’ desire for more authentic experiences on social media? For example, social media and smartphones have enabled a sharp increase in instances of “citizen journalists,” who give traditional news sources a run for their money by capturing videos of newsworthy happenings when and where they happen. Once the videos make it to social media, they attract millions of views, comments, and shares. At the same time, Facebook has recently pledged to crackdown on “clickbait,” which can be recognized by its spammy, over-the-top headlines like, “You won’t believe what …” and “The world wasn’t ready for …” These are designed to lure us off of social media and onto websites comprised of low-quality content and tons of pop-up ads. As part of the crackdown, Facebook “penalizes” articles that contain the clickbait-y headlines, so that they don’t appear as often in newsfeeds. So, do these developments--citizen journalism, negotiating bots, the clickbait crackdown, and Facebook’s new mission statement--mean that users around the world have more say over the information presented to them … or less? How will you use social media differently? Trivia Gals in Advertising
