KING JOHN’S CASTLE LIMERICK CITY RIVER SHANNON CLIFFS OF MOHER The cliffs take their name from an old promontory fort called Mothar or Moher, are a work of art by nature, a breath- taking natural sight of majestic cliffs rising proudly out of the sea. There are five different rock layers visible in the cliffs, dramatic geological shapes and thousands of seabirds that have made the cliffs their home. GANNETS PUFFIN The Shannon Estuary is a large estuary where the River Shannon flows into the . The estuary has Limerick City at its head and its seaward limits are marked by to the north and Kerry Head to the south. It is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) through the Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation. There is a rich diversity of wildlife at the Mouth of the Shannon including dolphins, flocks of oceanic seabirds, such as guillemots, gannets, razorbills, puffins, shearwaters and terns are seasonal visitors due to the large shoals of herrings, sprat and mackerel that follow the tidal currents into the Estuary.
