1. Introduction

Kilshenane graveyard was surveyed using a Magellan ProMark 3 Rover and Base sta on and presented in Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM). The GPS graveyard survey datasets were exported using Hangle so ware from GPS and then exported into AutoCAD and fi nished using Adobe Illustrator. Reference numbers men oned in the main body of the report relate to the ID point given when the survey was undertaken (see A3 plan Figure 2 below). A digital photographic record and surname database was also compiled to complement the cartographic survey (see appendices). Digital photographs of the fea- tures within the graveyard are referenced in the appendices and all photographs are provided on the a ached disc.

The survey was undertaken as per the tender survey criteria set out by the Heritage Sec- on of , (KCC) and further, with due regard to: .Conserva on principles as produced by ICOMOS in the Venice and Burra Charters .The publica on in 2004 of the Architectural Heritage Protec on-Guidelines for Planners by the DoEHLG, (now DAHG) .The heritage objec ves as outlined and adopted in the current Kerry County Council Development Plan 2009-2015, Built Heritage (Chapter 10)

The Conven on for the Protec on of the Architectural Heritage of Europe was signed at the Granada Conven on in 1985 and ra fi ed by Ireland in 1997. The conserva on aims as stated in the Burra Charter are for the reten on or restora on of historical signifi cance with the minimum of physical interven on and that such interven on work be reversible, maintain the structure’s character and se ng and that all conserva on works should be undertaken following comprehensive research.

An informa on booklet on care and maintenance for tombs should be compiled and sup- plied to the relevant parish church.

All of these graveyards are recorded monuments protected under the Na onal Monu- ments (Amendment) Act 1994 and under the jurisdic on of Kerry County Council. All proposed works should be carried out by experience competent personnel under ex- pert archaeological / architectural guidance and supervision. As these sites are recorded monuments conserva on and restora on works can only be carried out under license from the Na onal Monuments Service of the Dept. of Environment, Heritage and Local Gov.

Laurence Dunne Archaeology 2 Archaeological Survey, Kilshenane Graveyard, Banemore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

2. Site Location

Kilshenane graveyard is situated on the summit of a small hillock in rolling undula ng pasturage on the lower western limits of the Stack’s Mountains circa 6.5 km SE of Listow- el and 18.5km NE of Tralee, Co. Kerry (Figure 1 & Plate 1).

3. General

Kilshennane graveyard is recorded in the Record of Monuments & Places, (RMP), KE016- 059. No ves ge of Kilshenane Church-Cill tSeanáin-Church of St. Senan survives above ground today. The graveyard is marked but the church is not denoted on either of the 1st or 2nd Edi ons of the OS maps of 1841 and 1897 respec vely, (Figures 3 & 4). When John O’Donovan survey the graveyard in 1841 he stated that the old church dedicated to St. Sennan was totally destroyed, (O’Donovan 1983, 39). Immediately to the south, circa 0.12km from the graveyard, in a li le wooded glen is St. Senan’s Well-Tobershenane, (Figures 2-4 & Plates 1-2). A gate and s le leads into a demarcated grassy track to the well. The well is s ll visited and venerated today in par cular on the 8th March and also the Saturdays before May Day, Midsummer and Michaelmas-29th September, (ÓDanach- air 1958, 158-9).

4. Kilshenane graveyard

The graveyard of Kilshenane (Figure 2 & Plates 3-5) is in general good order and well maintained and fairly easy to nego ate for all ages.

5. Approach and parking

Kilshenane is approached along a short uphill cul-de-sac signposted from the N69 with ample, open carparking provided (Figure 2 & Plates 1 and 6).

Laurence Dunne Archaeology 3 Archaeological Survey, Kilshenane Graveyard, Banemore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

6. Entrance

The short approach from the carpark into the graveyard is upslope along a par ally tarred / gravelled accessway that is provided with a robust handrail along one side. Entrance is through a modern galvanised gate pivo ng between two solid square rubblestone piers on either side of which is a swing-s le and a step-s le (Plates 3 and 7).

6.1 Recommendations

No recommenda ons necessary.

7. Services & Signage

A commercial waste collec on bin is available however it appears that water is not pro- vided (Plate 5).

7.1 Recommendations

Water and a watering can should be provided.

8. Boundaries

The E & N boundary wall is constructed of modern concrete blocks, capped and dash ren- dered. The S & W boundary walls are of uncoursed local rubblestone, round capped with cement along the west and with ‘soldier’ capping at the south where the wall requires some maintenance and repairs due to ivy growth etc.

8.1 Recommendations

The ivy should be removed or severely cut-back before it gets fully established. The wall, especially along the S boundary needs to be repaired by a tradesperson skilled in rubble stone and mortar walls.

Laurence Dunne Archaeology 4 Archaeological Survey, Kilshenane Graveyard, Banemore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

9. Pathways

There is a formal gravelled path extending around all the graveyard interior perimeter as well as a diagonal spur from the N to the SE corner, (Figure 2 & Plates 3-5). An informal desire line extends from the entrance area directly into the interior of the graveyard as well, (Figure 2).

9.1 Recommendations

No recommenda ons necessary

10. Tombs

There are eighteen tombs of the strong-box and gabled types. The majority of them are constructed of local rubblestone and rendered while others are of ashlar limestone (Fig- ure 2 & Plates 8- & 11). The tombs vary in condi on from excellent to totally collapsed, while others are overgrown and neglected, (see Appendix 1). Of the 18 tombs recorded the names of four are unknown, while one is illegible and an- other, (tomb no. 7) is par ally decipherable-Tomb erected for GarreƩ Kur... and posterity, 1830, (Appendix 1).

10.1 Recommendations

Specialist work is required to preserve, repair, clean and restore several of the tombs at Kilshenane Graveyard. A couple will require careful rebuilding. Work should only be un- dertaken by skilled masons with a proven track record of working with historic structures and ashlar masonry. Grass covering some of the tombs should only be fully removed as the primary element of an agreed inclusive strategy of repairs and other conserva on and restora on works. The illegible or par ally legible inscrip ons should be cleaned and fully recorded. All work on these historic tombs should be undertaken with expert archaeological advice and guidance.

Laurence Dunne Archaeology 5 Archaeological Survey, Kilshenane Graveyard, Banemore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

11. Named Headstones

A total of two hundred and seventy three, (273) named and generally modern head- stones (HN) were recorded (Figure 2). The vast majority of the headstones are in good order and generally legible. Only one is totally sha ered and the name unknown, (Plate 12). The earliest recorded dated to the late 18th century, possibly 1776. Unusually, none of the headstones were inscribed in Irish.

11.1 Recommendations

The broken unknown headstone should be repaired or replaced.

12. Unnamed Headstones

A total of thirty unnamed gravemarkers were recorded dispersed throughout the older western area of the graveyard, (Figure 2).

13. Graveslabs

There is one illegible graveslab, (Grave No. 1).

14. Summary of recommendations for future manage- ment/conservation of Rattoo church & graveyard

.Water should be provided. .The ivy now re-establishing itself on the boundary walls should be severely cut back or removed before it becomes pervasive. .All vegeta on on the tombs should be cut back and removed. The tombs should then be reconstructed, repaired and repointed sensi ve to their original construc- on. The render should be replaced sensi ve to the original construc on.

Laurence Dunne Archaeology 6 Archaeological Survey, Kilshenane Graveyard, Banemore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

.The ivy and other growth on the tombs and on the boundary walls should only be fully removed as the primary element of an agreed strategy of repairs and other conserva on and restora on works. Otherwise ivy and other growth should be simply cut back and maintained at a controllable level. .Cleaning, conserva on and restora on works should only be carried out by quali- fi ed personnel under archaeological supervision. .It is likely that local informa on would furnish the names associated with some of the unnamed tombs and graves and this informa on should be collected and added to the database. .An all weather informa on board similar to one already exis ng at Killury grave- yard, in Lissycurrig near Causeway, should be established at a suitable loca on at the graveyard, most likely beside the entrance gate on its interior. .The Care and ConservaƟ on of Graveyards, a publica on from The Offi ce of Public Works (OPW) is recommended reading for future maintenance of the church and graveyard.

.An informa ve booklet on Kilshenane should be compiled by Kerry County Coun- cil and available locally. It should include helpful ps for parishioners on caring for the graveyard, and the individual plots, as well as giving advice about works which may professional services such as the cleaning of old headstones etc.

Note on RecommendaƟ ons

All recommenda ons as set out above are recommenda ons only based on visual site fi eldwork undertaken by the writer. No invasive or other interven on work was under- taken in the course of producing this report. Access into the surviving church tower was not possible as the entrance was boarded up. Ul mately, no responsibility will be ac- cepted by the writer with regard to the undertaking of the conserva on work as recom- mended in this report and based only on visual inspec on. The ul mate decision on rec- ommenda ons etc rests with Kerry County Council and the Na onal Monuments Service of the Dept. of Environment Heritage and Local Government.
