Curriculum Vitae, John M. Bird

John M. Bird was born 27 December 1931 in Newark, N.J. He attended public schools at Belleville, N.J., Glens Falls, N.Y., and Amsterdam, N.Y. In June, 1955, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Union College, Schenectady, N.Y. In December, 1955, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two years in the Counter Intelligence Corps, Munich, Germany, and four years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He entered Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in September, 1957, and received the degree Master of Science in Geology in June, 1959, and the degree Doctor of Philosophy in June, 1962. Bird’s work has been cited in American Men and Women of Science; Who’s Who in the East; Who’s Who in America; Who’s Who in the World; La Rousse L’Homme et La Terre, 1974, Paris-Match; Times, 1971, 1973; Time Magazine, 1971, 1973; Newsweek, 1973; and in the Associated Press, United Press, and Reuters, 1969, 1971, 1973, and 1984. In 1969, he coined and introduced the term “Plate Tectonics” in two now classic papers with John F. Dewey.
