FLYSCH AND MOLASSE OF THE CLASSICAL TACONIC AND ACADIAN OROGENIES: MODELS FOR SUBSURFACE RESERVOIR SETTINGS GERALD M. Box 746, Troy, NY 12181 ABSTRACT This field trip will examine classical sections of the Appalachians including Cambro-Ordovician basin-margin and basin-slope facies (flysch) of the Taconics and braided and meandering stteam deposits (molasse) of the Catskills. The deep water settings are part of the Taconic sequence. These rocks include massive sandstones of excellent reservoir quality that serve as models for oil and gas exploration. With their feet, participants may straddle the classical Logan's (or Emmon 's) line thrust plane. The stream deposits are :Middle to Upper Devonian rocks of the Catskill Mountains which resulted from the Acadian Orogeny, where the world's oldest and largest freshwater clams can be found in the world's oldest back-swamp fluvial facies. These fluvial deposits make excellent models for comparable subsurface reservoir settings. INTRODUCTION This trip will be in two parts: (1) a field study of deep-water facies (flysch) of the Taconics, and (2) a field study of braided- and meandering-stream deposits (molasse) of the Catskills. The rocks of the Taconics have been debated for more than 150 years and need to be explained in detail before the field stops make sense to the uninitiated. Therefore several pages of background on these deposits precede the itinera.ry. The Catskills, however, do not need this kind of orientation, hence after the Taconics (flysch) itinerary, the field stops for the Catskills follow immediately without an insertion of background informa tion. -

The project has positive environmental impacts consisting of the reduction of erosion and sediment movement into the adjacent waters of the state and improved reliability and resiliency of the adjacent municipal sewer and stormwater systems. This project additionally involves impacts to wetlands and floodplains in the form of permitted wetlands impacts and de minimus floodplain impacts. Otherwise, this project may have been eligible for Categorical Exclusion from detailed environmental review; additionally, the direct and indirect environmental effects of the project are still not significant enough to necessitate an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The Department's environmental review procedures require a 30‐day public comment period following the issuance of a Notice of Intent to Issue a Finding of No Significant Impact. If no public comments received during that period demonstrate that this Notice of Intent is in error, then the Finding of No Significant Impact will become effective. 81 Trip E STRATIGRAPHY OF THE CHAZY GROUP (MIDDLE ORDOVICIAN) IN THE NORTHERN CHAMPLAIN VALLEY by Frederick C. Shaw Herbert H. Lehman College Bronx, New York INTRODUCTION The Chazy Limestone (the oldest Middle Ordovician Group of the Cham plain Valley) was first named by Emmons (1842) from exposures 15 miles north of Plattsburgh at Chazy, New York. Here and elsewhere in the nor thern Champlain Valley (Fig. 1) the unit outcrops on a variety of normal fault blocks. Given the low dips and heavy cover, Chazy stratigraphy is most easily understood from various shore outcrops around Lake Champlain. Valcour Island, southeast of Plattsburgh, offers perhaps the best sec tion of the Chazy, and has been intensively studied (Raymond, 1905; Hud son, 1931; Oxley and Kay, 1959; Fisher, 1968; Shaw, 1968). The Isle La Motte, Vermont, exposures to be covered in this trip and trip Fare those studied by many of the same authors and, in addition, display the lower contact of the Chazy with the underlying Ordovician dolostones of Canadian age. In the northern Champlain Valley (Valcour Island and north to the International Boundary), the Chazy Limestone (now Group) consists of about 800 feet of quartz sandstones, calcarenites, dolomitic calcilu tites and biohermal masses (Fig. 2). Three formations, Day Point, Crown Point, and Valcour, in ascending order, were proposed by Cushing (1905) and have persisted to the present, albeit with some controversy (Fisher, 1968; Shaw, 1968). Oxley and Kay (1959) further subdivided the Day Point and Valcour into members, those of the Day Point (Head, Scott, Wait, Fleury) coming from southern Isle La Motte in the area to be visited. -

MULLER HEN Britain resumed open hostilities against France in 1803, the W relative tranquillity of Anglo-American relations was among the first casualties. By 1805, after Napoleon's success at AusterlilZ and Nel son's decisive victory at Trafalgar, the contest became a stalemate. With the French dominating the Continent and the British the sea, neither side could afford to observe the amenities of neutral rights. Britain took steps to close the loop-holes by which American merchantmen evaded the notorious orders-in-eouncil. and her navy renewed in earnest its harassing and degrading practice of impressing American citizens. III feeling and tension mounted as Anglo-American relations disinte grated. Then in late June 1807 tbe British frigate uopard fired on the United States Frigate Chesapeake, killing three American seamen and wounding eighteen others, and a party from the Leopard boarded the American warship and removed four alleged British deserters. The Chesapeake affair precipitated an ugly crisis. Americans, now more united in hostility toward Britain than at any time since the Revolution, demanded action from their government.l President Thomas Jefferson responded with the Embargo Act, hastily pushed through a special session of Congress and signed in December 1807.
