14 Valley Public Radio Report Featured on Morning Edition

Story on impact of valley fever by FM89’s Rebecca Plevin gets national attention.

For residents of Central California, the airborne fungal disease known as valley fever has been a fact of life for decades. But even as the number of cases of the disease spiked in recent years, attention from policy makers has lagged far behind many other diseases which kill or sicken far fewer people.

But earlier this May, the disease got a major dose of national exposure, thanks in part to a major feature on NPR’s Morning Edition. Hosts David Greene and Steve Inskeep introduced the report from KVPR’s own Rebecca Plevin during the program’s weekly Monday morning “Your Health” segment. Plevin talked with the physicians and researchers who are battling the disease, and profiled two Central California residents who are fighting the fungus, eight year-old Emily Gorospe of Delano and Paso Robles winemaker Todd (Schaefer) Scully.

The piece was produced by Valley Public Radio in association with the USC Annenberg-based Reporting On Health Collaborative. After airing nationally, the piece spawned thousands of online comments on NPR.org and social media. It also inspired a number of other media organizations to do similar stories, including a feature on the CBS Evening News, the Voice of America and the Daily Mail (UK).

“This is a great example of the impact that quality journalism can have,” says Director of Program Content Joe Moore. “This is a story which we first aired on Valley Edition last November, and now it’s gone national, airing on around 700 public radio stations. Rebecca did a great job, both in developing this story and her sources, and in telling this complex story to a national audience.”

This July 4, America’s national Independence Day celebration broadcasts live from the West Lawn of the United States Capitol. Hosted by Emmy Award- winning TV personality Tom Bergeron and NPR’s Korva Coleman, the event features performances from some of America’s best known celebrities and musical artists.

This year’s concert stars music legend Barry Manilow, who is back by popular demand following his powerful debut performance on the show in 2009. It also features performances by Candice Glover, the Season 12 winner of American Idol; country music artist Scotty McCreery; actor and singer Darren Criss; classical crossover star Jackie Evancho; Broadway and TV star Megan Hilty; and five-time Academy Award-winner John Williams conducting music from the Oscar-winning film Lincoln with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly.

In celebration of America’s 236th birthday, the show is capped off with a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with live cannon fire provided by The United States Army Presidential Salute Battery, an audience favorite and now an A Capitol Fourth tradition. Also participating in the event are The Choral Arts Society of Washington, along with The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band, the U.S. Air Force Ceremonial Band, members of the Armed Forces carrying the state and territorial flags and the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard provided by the Military District of Washington, D.C.

Or that car they’re “saving for when the kids start driving.” If your spring cleaning includes the harsh reality check that your project-on-wheels needs to go, please consider donating it to Valley Public Radio. In 2012, vehicle donations raised nearly $22,000 for FM89. That number is increasing every year.
