During the on-air campaign I invited you to #StandWithWXXI and so many of you did. For that we are grateful and look forward to continuing to earn that loyalty throughout the year! Best wishes for a wonderful summer! Norm Silverstein [email protected] @normWXXI Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Steed Energy, LLC designs and installs solar panels for residential and commercial customers throughout Rochester and the Finger Lakes area. Owner Glenn Steed explains what makes his company unique. Q. What inspired you to move into this line of work? I have always felt the need to make a difference in our world and this industry affords me the opportunity to do that every day! Q. What component of the installation process do you enjoy most? Being able to help people get away from fossil fuels and move to a more sustainable and intrinsically valuable energy source, working with high school students to teach them about renewable energy, and meeting new folks and hearing their stories. Q. Is solar for everyone? Recent changes to the utility regulations have opened up the option of solar to so many EVENTS people. We now have some other options for folks who might not have the space for solar but still want to make a difference. There are new programs which allow you to go solar with very little out of pocket expense, and some great loan programs as well. Q. What are some of the concerns when a client is considering solar energy? & The most important thing I do with customers is answer their questions. There are many different brands of solar panels and inverters, and different ways to install them. We do our best to educate the customer to enable them to make the best decision for themselves. We like to think ‘out of the box’ when it comes to solar. Our projects include highly customized installations, from integrated solar on a shipping container building, see-thru solar panels on an awning over a deck, battery based systems, as well as simpler residential and small commercial projects. Q. Considering that the technology for solar panels continues to evolve, what can we expect in the future? As the technology advances we are seeing larger wattage out of smaller panels, greater efficiency and monitoring capabilities in inverters, but by far the fastest growing segment of the market right now is battery technology. www.steedenergy.com NEWS GLENN STEED, OWNER To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email [email protected] REAL BOY AN INDIE LENS POP-UP FILM MONDAY, JUNE 5 AT 6:30 P.M. WAMU 88.5 BBC World Service NEWSCAST DONATE LIVE RADIO SHOWS NATIONAL Immigration Advocate Weighs In On Trump Administration's Move To End Flores Agreement LISTEN · 4:59 PLAYLIST Download Transcript August 21, 2019 · 5:19 PM ET Heard on All Things Considered NPR's Audie Cornish speaks with Wendy Young, president of the child advocacy organization KIND, about President Trump's moves to change requirements for the detention of migrant children. AUDIE CORNISH, HOST: The Trump administration is moving to allow the government to detain migrant families with children indefinitely. The Department of Homeland Security announced today that they plan to publish a new regulation that would eliminate the current 20- day limit on the detention of minors. That 20-day limit stems from a 1997 court settlement called the Flores Agreement that governs conditions for migrant children in federal care. Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan blamed the Flores Settlement for the influx of hundreds of thousands of migrants at the southern border. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) KEVIN MCALEENAN: The driving factor for this crisis is weakness in our legal framework for immigration. Human smugglers advertise, and intending migrants know well that even if they cross the border illegally, arriving at our border with a child has meant that they will be released into the United States to wait for court proceedings that could take five years or more. CORNISH: The government is set to publish the final rule on Friday. It will require approval from a federal judge before can go into effect. We're joined now by Wendy Young.

  • The Voices of NPR
Episode 11 – Michael Goldfarb – All Along the Watchtower The Voices of NPR And now a personal word, Michael Goldfarb has the voice of a journalist who has witnessed important events. He speaks with weariness and authority. His voice evokes a chorus of NPR announcers who report from near and distant places. Writer Dierdre Mask noted in an article in the Atlantic magazine, “We can’t see NPR reporters, so we have to picture them. And because they are with us in our most private moments—alone in the car, half-asleep in bed—we start to think we know them.” And we do think we know them. Their voices are iconic: distinct, informative, comforting, familiar. Their voices are the sounds of our better selves when we are bright and learned and engaged in the affairs of the world. No matter the day’s events, they give us hope that in a crazy world, sense and sensibility will prevail. Here are a few names I grew up with: Susan Stamberg, Bob Edwards, Carl Kasell, Noah Adams, Linda Wertheimer, Robert Siegel, Scott Simon, Cokie Roberts, and Bob Mondello. Each name evokes a voice, a style, a beat, that is the news soundtrack of our lives and shared imagination. We hear their stories as they report from bureaus from foreign capitals: Eleanor Beardsley, Paris; Rob Gifford, London; Ofiebea Quist-Arcton, Dakar; and, of course, Sylvia Poggioli, Rome. We hear war correspondents in the thick of battle: Michael Golfarb in Northern Ireland and Bosnia; Kelly McEvers in the midst of death and kidnapping in the Arab Spring, Tom Bowman among the fire and mortars of Helmand Province, and David Gilkey ambushed and killed by the Taliban.

I would like to take credit for this approach, but in all honesty the season-by-season time scale was dictated by the filming schedule of the ITV series The Seasons, for which the suite provides a soundtrack. Composing ‘Autumn’ in the autumn or ‘Spring’ in the spring turned out to be more stimulating than I had anticipated, especially as the 12 months from September 2008 to August 2009 were unusually rich in seasonal difference in the British Isles, with a ‘proper’ snowy winter even in the temperate south of England where my family and I live, something that only comes around once a decade or so.

  • 2006 Annual Reportreport This Has Been a Remarkable Year for Minnesota Public Radio and American Public Media
Minnesota Public Radio American Public Media 20062006 Annual ReportReport This has been a remarkable year for Minnesota Public Radio and American Public Media. With our 37-station network, we now serve a regional audience of nearly 800,000 listeners each week, providing news and classical music to listeners across the state and region. Through our third service, The Current, we provide alternative music to radio listeners in the Twin Cities and Rochester and around the globe via the Web. Across the country and beyond, our national programs from American Public Media are heard by more than 14.3 million people each week. Minnesota Public Radio’s impact and its ability to bring Minnesotans together have never been stronger. In its fi rst full year of service, The Current attracted nearly 170,000 listeners weekly. With a strong commitment to local music, the station made solid connections with its audience through a playlist offering the best of music across genres, eras and artists. The Current also brought people together and advanced its public service mission through community events. Classical Minnesota Public Radio serves a growing and increasingly diverse audience through extensive arts and cultural programming. We believe that several of our initiatives have contributed to a renaissance in classical music listening. Our award-winning Mozart celebration marked the composer’s 250th birthday in meaningful and interactive ways. And in a historic project, Minnesota Public Radio and the Minnesota Orchestra have joined to archive selected Minnesota Orchestra broadcasts and make them available to listeners online. This archive is among the fi rst of orchestral concert recordings archived and available online.
