SERIOUSLY PLAYFUL AND PLAYFULLY SERIOUS: THE HELPFULNESS OF HUMOROUS PARODY A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Michael Richard Lucas May 2014 Accepted by: Victor J. Vitanza, Committee Chair Stephaine Barczewski Cynthia Haynes Beth Lauritis i ABSTRACT In the following work I create and define the parameters for a specific form of humorous parody. I highlight specific problematic narrative figures that circulate the public sphere and reinforce our serious narrative expectations. However, I demonstrate how critical public pedagogies are able to disrupt these problematic narrative expectations. Humorous parodic narratives are especially equipped to help us in such situations when they work as a critical public/classroom pedagogy, a form of critical rhetoric, and a form of mass narrative therapy. These findings are supported by a rhetorical analysis of these parodic narratives, as I expand upon their ability to provide a practical model for how to create/analyze narratives both inside/outside of the classroom.

It's time for Security Now!, the show that covers protecting you online. Here he is, ladies and gentlemen, our Explainer-in-Chief, the man in charge of Security Now!, the man who explains how this stuff works and what to do to keep yourself safe, Mr. Steven Gibson. Steve Gibson: Hey, Leo. Great to be with you again, as always. Leo: He's the guy in charge at GRC.com, that's the Gibson Research Corporation, creator of SpinRite. It's kind of nice because you have one thing that you do for a living, which is the software. Steve: Yup, pays the bills. Leo: Pays the bills. And so you've kind of got a good life, if what you want to do is kind of be in touch with what's going on in technology.

Amy Scott reports. TEXT OF STORY KAI RYSSDAL: There are hundreds of college and university programs out there teaching people how to be teachers. Some of those programs do a fine job. Others don't. So New York state is set to decide tomorrow on a different way: letting alternative groups like Teach for America create their own master's programs. Teach For America logo (teachforamerica.org) From the Marketplace Education Desk, Amy Scott reports. AMY SCOTT: New York is one of just a handful of states that require teachers to have a master's degree before they can be fully certified. Timothy Daly with the New Teacher Project says that's created a monopoly for teachers' colleges. Tomorrow the New York State Board of Regents may vote to chip away at that monopoly by allowing alternative groups like Daly's to offer master's programs. TIMOTHY DALY: The right to be the exclusive granters of master's degrees, in a state that requires master's degrees, that was a very lucrative right that they're proposing to take away. But Daly says the New York proposal isn't the answer.
