Background In 2014 the Flinders Community Association gifted Andrew Rogers’ sculpture ‘I am” to commemorate the village’s 150th anniversary. This sculpture is currently situated at the roundabout.

Andrew Rogers is an internationally recognised artist. He exhibits internationally and his sculptures and photographs are in numerous private and public collections in Australia and around the world. The sculpture ‘I am’ is approximately 3.5m in height, constructed in silicon, bronze and stainless steel in a conical shape.

FCA intended that selection of the sculptor and sculpture would be via a competitive process whereby four sculptors would be invited to produce a maquette and a judging panel would determine the successful sculpture. Following advice from the Shire, the sub-committee tabled a proposal to abandon the idea of a competitive process in favour of the selection of Andrew Rogers as the preferred/chosen sculptor.

Following the announcement of the sculpture, objections were made to the Shire about the sculpture project. The objections related to the type and form of sculpture, the proposed location of the sculpture, the community engagement undertaken and the process for selection of the sculptor and sculpture.

As a result of the objections, a planning review was undertaken by statutory planning and it was determined that although the Shire was closely involved in the project, the initiative for the sculpture had come from FCA, and as such, there was a requirement for FCA to obtain a permit for constructing a structure on the crown land at the roundabout.

During the planning application advertising period thirty-eight (38) objections and 1 petition of objection comprising 145 signatures were received.

Following consideration of the feedback provided by the community with respect to the Flinders Community Association (FCA) sculpture proposal, Council resolved date to accept and approve the sculpture at the roundabout location (intersection of Cook Street and Wood Street, Flinders) as proposed by the FCA subject to the following conditions:

A. A future review of the location of the sculpture be undertaken at the expiration of two years from today’s date; and

B. A future review of community acceptance of the sculpture be undertaken at the expiration of two years from today’s date.

Flinders Review Working Group A working group comprising Shire officers Jane Alexander , Chris Munro, Ed Peacock, Kathy Heffernan and Kat Hodgins met in November 2016 and February 2017. Members of the working group provided email input to the review questions. These meetings were later followed up with an email distributing the draft survey and survey results and to seek working group feedback on a recommendation.

Stina Haug attended some of the meetings. Haug was contracted to prepare and conduct the review and analyse results.

Jane Alexander met with Flinders Community Association in December 2016 and February 2017 (with and Stina Haug) as per the Management Agreement Clause 16 (Sculpture Review. In accordance with the Council decision of 11 Aug 2014 and the planning permit condition, the sculpture will be subject to a review on 11 Aug 2016. MPS will work with FCA to determine how this review will be undertaken and the timing for the review. The outcomes of the review will be presented to Council for their consideration and approval).

An agreement was reached by officers and FCA on the questions and review process, its timeline and roll out.

Queries from other members of the community have been responded to mostly by email.

• 8.5% suggested the sculpture be moved to the park • 4% would like to see another sculpture at the roundabout • 3% felt a tree or a garden would be more appropriate at the roundabout. • 5.5% said they were unhappy with how the sculpture had been selected and said that it had split the town.

Outcome focused feedback • “All good art is contentious and creates discussion. You can't please everyone. However it could also be possible to have rotating art only in place for a set time before being replaced” • “I would welcome sculpture scattered across the township and rural properties as a feature of the local area. These sculptures could be marked on a trail map.”

Respondents’ comments

Post code Feedback Flinders 1. It is an artwork which looks forward. It is modern. It is part of the future. We have a few monuments which celebrate the past. To me this one celebrates the future without imposing itself on the community. 2. It can be interpreted, no matter what the artist's intention. Some say that it celebrates Bass Strait as a piece of giant kelp. Others say its shape compliments the shape of the adjacent Give Way signs. So, many interpretations. Flinders 1. The promotion of I am has not been an honest one. 2. Very distressing for the many residents (mainly long term) of Flinders. They feel this construction does not represent them. 3. The promoters - new members of the community very practised in the process of achieving their goals. Flinders 50 meters off the Flinders pier. Flinders A "sculpture park" could be created in the community park on the northern side of Cook Street where it could be moved to. The sculpture bears no relevance to Flinders Village and looks insignificant where it is. A minority group made this decision which was a very divisive one in the community. Flinders a freeform more organic planting around sculpture more appropriate to its aesthetic Flinders A local artist. Appropriate for its position. Looks good. Flinders Absolutely love it Flinders Although generously gifted, I don't believe the sculpture truly represents the local area. We have amazing local flora and fauna, farming and natural geography on the peninsula and every time I see this particular sculpture I see a piece of rolled up tossed out waste paper! I loved the "spinning tree" sculpture previously sited on peninsula link at Frankston and I believe something like that would add more street appeal to the centre of Flinders. Flinders Although the sculpture does not represent the Flinders I know, it may as well stay in its present position. Flinders Andrew Rogers, the local sculptor has written "I have sculptures all over the world and to me this location is one of the best to show sculpture and bring a benefit to the town of Flinders." Flinders As a permanent Flinders resident I am proud to have this beautiful piece of art situated where it is as a show piece to other residents and any visitors . We should be proud of this sculpture and appreciate the gift we have been given. Flinders As far as I am concerned the sculpture has grown on me - especially at night when it is alight! Flinders Beautiful piece of art that attracts but does not pose a detracting danger in driving through that area. Perfect position. Flinders Best improvement to the face of flinders Flinders Designed by a Flinders resident and world famous sculptor, "I Am" enhances the roundabout's appearance and is perfectly located at the entrance to Flinders. Ideally shaped for a roundabout, it is complemented by simple yet effective landscaping. Floodlit at night it provides a unique and spectacular sight. Flinders Disappointed with lack of community consultation re design Flinders Do not like it lit at night. During daylight it is organic and benign. The lighting at night makes it look ugly and ghostly. Flinders Does not look like or represent the kelp of Flinders. Sorry but it looks like a unravipiece of Lino or carpet. Flinders Excellent idea/location/generosity. Very poor/unprofessional/divisive implementation process. The artwork is "an off the shelf" piece and does not in any way respond to the proposal that it celebrates the Flinders 150 Year anniversary. The work "I am" sits poorly in its environment due to scale, colour and tone.

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders excellent location and a real signature item for the whole town and area. Whether you do or do not "understand" it, and whether or not it is to your own taste, it is a wonderful feature that we should all be proud of. Flinders feel it is lost in the situation it is in in at present. too many conflicting things going on in that site. Flinders Feel that the sculpture is visually unappealing, doesn't represent either Flinders history or it's community & thus it's position is entirely inappropriate. Perhaps submissions from local artists for an alternative could be sought, with residents being able to vote for the most popular option; more of a community-based solution. Flinders Flinders is a small town with a community that is open, diverse and loyal. The sculpture shows this to locals and visitors. Picasso said:" The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life of our souls". Keeping our minds and eyes open to new and creative experiences is important in Flinders and that is why we love living there. Flinders Flinders is world famous for its abundance of Weedy Sea Dragons. Ask Sir David Attenborough. A sculpture of one of these would be much more appropriate than what we got through the "due" process. "I am" is an eyesore. Flinders Flinders needs a relevant sculpture. A Sea Dragon would be perfect as Flinders is the best place in the world to dive with Sea Dragons. There have been many documentaries filmed featuring Sea Dragons here. The current sculpture is terrible and an eyesore. It has no relevance being here in Flinders. Flinders For many years the roundabout had a group of ugly signs in its centre pointing to the Golf Course. Waste Hopper etc with no landscaping to which nobody objected as being unsuitable. Now we have a unique piece of art provided by a Flinders resident, who just happens to be one of the world's best sculptures in the field, and it is surrounded by attractive landscaping. It is absolutely inconceivable that anyone would consider removing it. This would be a disaster for the village and its reputation amongst the art community. Flinders For the focal point and gateway into flinders, the statue is a very poor tribute to flinders and does reflect the 150th anniversary of a seaside village -a shipment, anchor or even a Norfolk pine would be more befitting. Flinders Frankly seeing the sculpture on the roundabout daily makes me wonder whatever possessed it's gifting or installation at the main entry of town; as its appeal is marginal at best. If it could be removed believe that would be a substantial improvement, maybe a nice indigenous garden instead? Flinders From the outset I have opposed the sculpture ... "it's a nothing piece" ... surely the money could have been spent on a avenue of trees along Wood street & tasteful plants on the roundabout. No, I'm not an old fuddy duddy...Flinders is quietly elegant ... no need for gaudy artwork! Flinders Fully support sculpture in its present position at the roundabout Flinders Gorgeous fluid sculpture we should be so lucky to have. Flinders Great location and something new for our Township Flinders Great location. But some of the shrubs have died and need replacing. Can Council add a few more plants? Flinders I am' from village aspect looks like a roll of corrugated cardboard unfurled at top. From south looks like musketeers boot. It has no relevance to Flinders and should be replaced with a meaningful sculpture based on the townships unique sea//agricultural heritage. Flinders I am happy to have the sculpture remain at the roundabout Flinders I am local to town and like the sculpture and location

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders I am more than happy with it ... it's modern yet never changing ... most appropriate Flinders I am not happy with the method of choice and installation. It is the first issue that I have witnessed that completely divided the community. More care, explanation, and consultation was required; to not only Flinders residents, but the wider community e.g. Shoreham, Red Hill etc. Flinders I and my visitors enjoy the sculpture and its surrounds. a) In situ there is no interference and vision of N/s, E/W traffic b)It is low maintenance c)It is distinctive - in keeping with the culture of the Mornington Peninsula (e.g. Dame Elizabeth Murdoch's sculpture garden). A strong landmark in keeping with the village concept of Flinders. Flinders I appreciate that the love of art is subjective and means different things to different people. This sculpture is ugly and does not represent anything about Flinders or its history. I would personally like it removed. If council is spending any money on this project I would like to see the monies used for more important things like roads! Flinders I believe it should stay where it is. Flinders I believe the whole town has learnt from this project and to now move the sculpture would only return us to a divided township. Is art not meant to be controversial? Flinders I can't really justify the amount of money it will take to move it now. I wasn't happy with the process to erect it there. (I believe money did the talking). Does it represent Flinders? NO! Thank goodness it's not as big as I imagined. Flinders I could never understand the controversy over the sculpture. I like it, I like it's position and have become so accustomed to such a fine work of art being in such a visible position. Long may it be so. Flinders I do not believe the design is relevant to Flinders. Flinders I do not feel it has any historical value and therefore could be located in area such as the playground. Recreational area or the like. Flinders I don't find the "sculpture" attractive or meaningful. I was shocked to see a brief video of 5 or 6 of the same objects being placed at the centre of an intersection in New York! Surely this indicates that it is not specifically relevant to Flinders! Placement: Only if in a less dominant place! Flinders I don't know what it has to do with Flinders. It looks more like a broken trumpet. What does it represent? Why did we need it. I grew up here, but the decisions are made by the new wealthy minority. Now we have pedestrian crossings x2!! People still cross anywhere they like. It's a small quaint country town. Let's remember why we all wanted to live here. Flinders I don't see the sculpture has any reference to Flinders if it is seaweed? Could be anywhere in Western Port Bay. It is not significant enough of our Village I am sure we could have done better - included our History etc. People when asked if they noted it they say no - what is it supposed to be - looks like crumbled paper....is one of the replies....Maybe it should be in the park - with a note of its relevance. Maybe a piece of art but I don't think it is a one off as well. Flinders I don't think that the Sculpture is appropriate for this site - it needs a less public place for quiet contemplation - let's replace it with a strong piece with some real appeal for such an important obvious site in our very special Flinders village Flinders I don't think that the Sculpture is appropriate for this site - it needs a less public place for quiet contemplation - let's replace it with a strong piece with some real appeal for such an important obvious site in our very special Flinders village Flinders I feel the concrete bollard the sculpture is set in does not work aesthetically. I would prefer the sculpture to be situated In an area near the pier or in the park and then people would be able to actually walk around the sculpture. Flinders I feel the sculpture would be better relocated. Being grey it is totally innocuous. some people don't even see it or know its there. It would be better in a park. I would rather a nice tree or a statue that has historical significance eg Mathew Flinders

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders I grew up in Flinders and so did my mother's . Our history in the town is over 60 years. The people who commissioned this sculpture are the new wealthy members of the community, not the original locals. It's a monument to the wealthy who are trying to make their mark on the town. The sculpture has no significance to Flinders or its people, it's modern art for elite taste erected by Melbourne people who are desperate to belong to their "new discovery, Flinders". Why must people change a place and the charm that drew them in the first place? If there has to be a sculpture, a weedy sea dragon or something historical that everyone relates to would be more appropriate. I think the sculpture is in the wrong place, it should be in the park (if we have to keep the damn thing!). The roundabout centre should serve a practical purpose, directions! Could we have a sign post in the middle telling people street names and directions e.g. monument/pier, Cape Schanck/Shoreham. The "monument committee" are the same people responsible for putting in pedestrian crossings with flashing lights in our main street. The flashing lights are unnecessary and ruin the country charm of our main street and the crossings are so close together it's defeats the purpose. These people have too much time, not enough sense and they refuse to listen to what the real locals want. Flinders I have lived in Flinders my whole life and do not agree with theme and position. Flinders I just can't understand how something so simple (and in my view relatively boring) could cost so much. I don't feel it adds much to the landscape. Flinders I like it in this location... especially as Michelangelo's 'David' is not available! Flinders I like it more and more each time I pass it Flinders I like the sculpture in its current location. Flinders I love sculpture but this is ugly, in a very prominent position. It represents division and lack of harmony in a small community. As a freebie, we were all supposed to it willingly but it's just an ugly, free lumpy thing. Another sculpture in that position, marking the anniversary would be wonderful, maybe selected through a more inclusive process. Not more people on a panel, more choices to find a better sculpture. Flinders I love the sculpture at the roundabout - much better than a sign that says 'To the ' - I also think it's an honour to have a sculpture made by a world class artist. Flinders I love the sculpture....my only criticism is that it should have been bigger! Flinders I love this sculpture and its iconic position in the village. I think it's a beautiful beacon that signals you've arrived in Flinders and it would be a real shame to lose it. Flinders I love this sculpture and, as a psychologist, only wish more people understood its significance for mental health... To me it is a beautiful representation of the formless Self, our human-only capacity of conscious awareness... the life Flinders I really enjoy the sculpture and think it is well-sited. Flinders I really like the sculpture and I think it is well positioned on the roundabout. It is distinctive and adds an extra touch of class to the Flinders township. Flinders I really like the sculpture but feel that it gets 'lost' at the roundabout. If it were 3 to 4 times the size it would be better 'read' from a distance. As it is I feel that it would be better located where people could get closer to the sculpture to better experience it. Flinders I really like the sculpture; I think it is interesting and beautiful. The white mount it sits on stands out a bit much. Flinders I remain dissatisfied that the community was not allowed to participate in an 'open selection' process for a suitable sculpture, however it is here now and we do need to acknowledge that its present location is inappropriate for a piece of art to either enjoy or respond to. It is also is a distraction to drivers at night when it is illuminated. Flinders I think a pretty garden bed would be lovely. I don't like the sculpture and don't think it has a place in Flinders. Flinders I think anything as a roundabout feature should relate to the flinders area history and settlers (people)

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders I think it is a very good location. It does not block the traffic view. It can be seen from many different points easily from the side walk. Flinders I think it is an asset to the Flinders village where it is. Don't move it. Flinders I think it is lovely having a sculpture in this location. Flinders I think it is ugly and should be removed. Flinders I think it provides a wonderful focal point as you enter flinders. Flinders I think it should be in the Park up near the Post Office, were people can interact with it better. Flinders I think it would be far better off in the children's play area so people can actually look at it. I think it is ghastly wherever it is!! It looks like a piece of rolled up underlay from a carpet. Flinders I think it would be rude to refuse this generous donation. Flinders I think it's current location is perfect & a great spot. Flinders I think the sculpture is fantastic and in a perfect location. I knew nothing about it until the day it was installed and I was thrilled to see such a lovely addition to the village. Flinders I think the sculpture lacks artistic merit and I think it is aesthetically unappealing. An appropriate method of choosing a sculpture for the town would be through an open competition seeking entries from a wide range of sculpting artists. Flinders I think the Sculpture looks fantastic where it is situated and has made a very ordinary round about look amazing as the entry to the Flinders shopping & tourist precinct. I think it would be a terrible shame to move it and what would be put in its' place ? if replaced by a tree are we going to have everyone's opinion on what tree and review in a year's time to see if everyone liked the type of tree? I think leave well enough alone where it is. We should be grateful that a team got behind beautifying the street. Flinders I think the sculpture should be more representative of the 150th anniversary of Flinders. In such a prominent position people only see the divisions the sculpture has created in our community. Flinders I think the sculpture will provide an iconic reference for flinders Flinders I think the sculpture would be better placed in one of the Cook St Parks. I live within 200 metres of the sculpture, drive past it daily at least twice a day and have never seen a person looking at it, photographing it, etc. If the artist wishes it to be seen in the round it would be better sited in a Cook St Park. Also the colour of the sculpture (Brown) melts into the background of brown buildings surrounding the roundabout, making it difficult to actually distinguish. The base is also proportionally far too big. Flinders I think the statue suits its present location and makes the entrance to Flinders more interesting and appealing. Flinders I think this sculpture is a wonderful addition to the village and the completed landscaping sets it off very well. Great outcome! Flinders I very much like the location and hope it stays where it is Flinders I wish to have the sculpture to remain in its present position. The sculpture is particularly spectacular at night when it is lid up. Flinders I would be very happy with a nice indigenous garden instead of the heavy metal monument! Poor taste. Flinders I would have much preferred a beautiful native tree such as a flowering gum in the middle of the roundabout, or if there was to be a sculpture something that is relevant to the town - perhaps one of Matthew Flinders Flinders i would like to see the small park below the general store turned into a arts precinct and the sculpture with others re-located there. it would allow it to be properly viewed in safety.

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders I'd prefer something that relates to Flinders being a little fishing/farming village, not 5th avenue, New York. Flinders If a sculpture is the desired outcome, I would suggest a young local emerging artist be commissioned and if not, I would like to see a tree in order to maintain the Village feel. Flinders If feels more corporate and suited to a large forecourt area than a coastal Victorian town. No interface with its environment or history. Flinders if it is to be shifted- it could be moved to the park Flinders If there is to be anything in the roundabout I would like to see something associated with Flinders and our wonderful history, which I am greatly proud of. Flinders In my view the sculpture has no artistic merit and looks like a piece of random vertically rolled carpet. Visitors to Flinders either do not notice it or comment that it makes no impression on them at all. The sculpture does not enhance the ambiance of the Flinders Village or create any central artistic work which lifts the spirits and promotes cohesion and wellbeing within the Flinders Community. It should be removed from its current position immediately. Flinders In the park opposite the post office would be a better site. Flinders in the park, near verticals like trees Flinders In the village common. Flinders IS THIS SOME PIECE OF KELP .WE SHOULD HAVE A REPLICA OF MATTHEW FLINDERS IN HAS BOAT WITH GEORGE BASS . Flinders Is a good entrance to Flinders instead of the usual roundabout garden plot Flinders It has already got an "uncared for" look to it, the shine has gone from the interior of it, & the surrounding garden is truly ordinary. Flinders It has no relevance to the town & is lost in its greyness, as everything surrounding it is the same colour, roads buildings etc. is untouchable due to it being in the centre of a roundabout. Reposition it in the park so people can get up close and touch it. I believe the process of acquiring it was most undemocratic the decision being made without consultation with the wider community. I have seen the most amazing sculptures in Cottesloe WA which have been acquired by that council following exhibitions and selected by the people who attend that event, it seems to me there was no competition and it is one of many sculptures made from the same mould. Flinders It has no significance to Flinders. It was "forced" on our community. Sell it & put something there about Flinders. Flinders It has no significance to the village of Flinders Flinders It is a beautiful addition to the Flinders village environment. I am very concerned that the 'naysayers' will have their way and have it removed. Flinders It is a fantastic piece of art wonderfully located at the roundabout. There should be no thought about moving it. Flinders It is an appropriate culmination of a lot of work by well-intentioned residents and consultants and the decision to place it at the roundabout was made after extensive community consultation and majority acceptance. It should require a very significant majority of residents and ratepayers (say 75%) to warrant having it relocated. Flinders It is an inappropriate sculpture for the Flinders village. The sculpture looks like a mangled car. Something more reflective of the seaside would be appropriate. Flinders it is in middle of the town Flinders It is in the perfect location for this iconic sculpture Flinders It is not a desirable location for a sculpture for road safety and aesthetic reasons

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders It is there, people put in a positive effort let's spend our money on constructive things not pulling down things in place e.g. the RSL monument Flinders It is totally at odds with the look and feel of the village. It is better suited in a modern futuristic setting much like its "cousin" in the Canberra airport terminal or Federation Square. Flinders it is ugly and inappropriate at the roundabout Flinders It looks great where it is Flinders It should be located at a position where people can walk around it and interact with it and it should not be mounted on a concrete plinth. I suggest on the lawn in front of the community hall. Flinders It should stay. Local artist. Unique. Everyone has a different opinion. As the vegetation grows it looks better and better. Save our money and spend it on more useful things. Flinders It was a missed opportunity. What should be there is steel replica of Bass/Matthew flinders boat sitting upright on its stern. Flinders It would be much better in one of the parks in the village where it could be appreciated Flinders It's awful and a complete waste of money and I'm sure the local fire station would have appreciated the donation Flinders It's challenging for some perhaps, but it's a great sculpture so let's not let the arts illiterati have this taken away. Flinders It's great - a unique artwork that we are lucky to have in a public space. Flinders It's just great Flinders Its location is inappropriate, and I am not convinced something titled "I Am" is relevant to as a commemoration for a township. Flinders Its significance is lost as the sculpture is not an unique piece but one of a series. Flinders It's there now and so it should stay. I hate these surveys because the 'haters' will be more inclined to respond than the 'lovers' or 'neutrals'. I don't mind it; it's pretty insignificant actually and most visitors don't notice it! Flinders I've never liked the Sculpture as I don't think that it fits in with the Flinders Village. I have also noticed that it seems to be rusting. It's an eyesore and I hope that it's removed soon. Flinders Keep up with the gardening. Flinders Looking good! Well maintained! Flinders Looking good. Make the area look good. Flinders Looks great where it is. Flinders looks like non descriptive piece of seedweed, Flinders can do better Flinders love it Flinders Love it and will be displeased if it is removed. Flinders Love it. Its got the feel of the beach. Kelp. Planting , lighting very effective. Flinders Love the sculpture and the location. A wonderful addition to Flinders. Flinders makes a most attractive entry to the town. Flinders Maybe it could be relocated to the grassed area outside the Public Hall, preferably hidden behind a tree. A nice sculpture of Matthew Flinders or George Bass would be more suitable for our roundabout Flinders More appropriate to be located in the park, Flinders More foliage to surround the sculpture Flinders Move to park with the toilet block downhill from general store Flinders Near the public toilets Flinders No proper community consultation was made. The 'committee' of ex CEO's that shoved it down our throats told us we were not sufficiently 'grateful' and knew better. Flinders Now that it's bent and misshapen it does the streetscape and town's image no good. Were it to be repaired it would be different.

Flinders On many occasions I have witnessed cars stopping in the roundabout to view the sculpture thus creating a hazard, move it to the foreshore or the park where people can view it in a safe environment. Flinders Originally I thought the sculpture would have been better place in the parkland so people would have more contact. I have grown used to it & happy for it to stay where it is Flinders pity such a fuss was made about it! Flinders plant features trees not sculptures Flinders Please keep the sculpture where it is - it provides a beautiful entrance to the township. Flinders Positioning the sculpture in one of the parks in Flinders seems more appropriate. The roundabout position needs are more attractive centrepiece as this looks like a piece of rolled carpet and most uninspiring. It certainly has no impact on a visitor entering the town - in fact, many don't even notice the dingy looking blob. Flinders Possibly locate it near the waste hopper. Not so far for them to move it when it is finally recognised for what it is. Flinders Prefer existing location. Not broke, leave it. Flinders Prefer in park and would prefer of Mathew Flinders 'row boat' in the roundabout, relevant to Flinders history Flinders Prefer the name "We Are" better reflects community, and as "I Am" may offend Jewish folk as this is the name taken by God in Exodus 3:13,14 of the Bible! Flinders Prime location deserving of something better that suits all of Flinders' residents. Not just FCA members. Supposedly commemorating Flinders 150 years? Take the initiative councillors + negotiate with Melbourne City council to get the statue of Matthew Flinders moved to this spot!! I'll put up the first $5000 to help this happen! Flinders probably up the globe wattage Flinders Rather than a rich established artist getting a gig there should have been a competition to give a local a chance Flinders Remove it. Not original. Flinders Sad that the potential for something significant on the site has been missed. Nontheless effort should be made to maintain the original quality and surfaces of the work which is not weathering well and becoming even less of a statement . Flinders Sculpture enhances main gateway to the Township . A work of international significance Flinders Sculpture gifted to Flinders, selected for the roundabout site by committee which knows modern sculpture (a major feature on the MPS - McClelland, Peninsula Link, Gandel Park to open Point Leo, Montalto, Elgee Park). Artist happy that his choice is most suitable for viewing in the round - and enhances entrance to Flinders - wonderful when lit at night. Approved by VicRoads. Flinders Sculpture is an elegant artwork that does not intrude into the overall village landscape and is a low impact centerpiece the the village roundabout. . I highly recommend it stays where is is and the council or community do not incur additional cost to move it. Flinders Sculpture is beautiful and in exactly right location Flinders Sculpture looks like a rolled up piece of carpet. I would like to see something more in keeping with the historical connections to Mathew Flinders/ George Bass . Flinders Sculpture should be I. The park not on the roundabout. There was no community consultation re sculpture in that no other artist was allowed to offer a sculpture no competition was held and an elite small group of residents decided and the told the rest of community that it was done. The process was appalling and the location of sculpture is appalling. Flinders Simple and elegant sculpture, that is well suited to its location and to the seaside character of the Flinders community. Our grandchildren always enjoy it and comment each time we pass.

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders Something needed to be placed on the roundabout. Given that the sculptor is rated in the best in the world in his field, and he is a resident of Flinders, an something of this type that met Vicroads requirements for what could be placed there, it was a unique opportunity I believe that it was a wonderful asset to the community which was accepted after three community votes on its acceptance Any decision to remove is from a small group with very subjective views and if successful will be regretted by the Shire and the community in the long term. Flinders Strongly object to process imposing it on the town without community consultation or public art competition. No relevance to 150th anniversary. Ugly representation/image entering Flinders town. Relocation near seats & walkway to Shire Toilets or children's playground where could be an interesting feature & public can interact - or MPRG. Flinders The chosen site confuses the art work with street signs and is not shown to its best . It has a chance of causing an accident should a motorist take time to 'enjoy' viewing it and if not a motorist why is it placed where it is? Given the plethora of street/ traffic signs in Flinders it is never going to be free of signs unless it is in one of the two parks. Flinders The community of Flinders overwhelmingly voted for the Andrew Roger's sculpture to be placed on the roundabout on the intersection of Wood and Cook street. The sculpture in its garden setting make a pleasing focal point for the village. Flinders The current position is perfect for such a wonderful piece of artwork. Flinders The Flinders Community is fortunate to have residents who donated a world class sculpture. Andrew Rogers is a local resident and has sculptures around the world. The Flinders sculpture is ideally situated on the roundabout, the entrance to the village. May it stay for ever. Flinders The Hall corner, the Cook Norman park corner or the Cook St park would be suitable venues. The sculpture "I am" carries insufficient significance or symbolic reference to the history and development of the Flinders Community to be used in a central pivotal location such as the roundabout. Flinders The landscaping works have made it look particularly good. Flinders The locals of Flinders did not want the sculpture, it was forced on them by pushy individuals who have recently moved to the town and want to change it. These people think thy are important and know what's best for the town. I think it is a monument to their influence and importance. The pedestrian crossings is another example of their interference with things not necessary. Unfortunately most of theses people are recently retired here and they find they have nothing to do and they think they are being helpful. Flinders The location of the present sculpture is ideal for such a fine work of art Flinders The park Flinders The planting and lighting have worked well to enhance it. Flinders The roundabout is not the place for it... Flinders The roundabout is the best location Flinders The scale of the sculpture is too small for its current location; it would be better displayed at the corner of the park opposite the hall. Flinders The sculpture bears no relationship to Flinders, was not selected through an open community based process, is not an original and is located in an inappropriate location. A better location for this sculpture is adjacent to the playgrounds.

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders The sculpture bears no relevance to Flinders and its colourful history. The sculpture looks rather like an elephants' trunk from one direction and a bent piece of metal from another. Flinders deserves a more meaningful sculpture in such a public space which more reflects Flinders life and history. Flinders The sculpture doesn't represent or have anything to do with our beautiful village, just a piece of scrap metal stack into a block of cement! Flinders The sculpture doesn't represent or have anything to do with our lovely village, it's just a piece of scrap metal in the shape of a standing rat stack in to a block of cement! Flinders The sculpture has become a symbol of division. Perhaps Rosebud might like it. Flinders The sculpture has no relationship to Flinders. Further it does not relate to anything else that I know of. It appears to be a generalised concoction that has been used elsewhere, and was used simply because it was available. Flinders The sculpture has NOTHING to do with the 150th commemoration of Flinders. It is an embarrassment, looking similar to a stiff piece of carpet. The community and I were especially appalled about the way it was chosen, well should I say - pushed upon us! Flinders The sculpture is a delight! Flinders is well served having such a fine work of art at its heart. Particularly as it is by a local artist. Flinders The sculpture is a distinctive focal point and creates yet another Flinders "difference" to other Mornington Peninsula villages. Its current location means it is viewed by most motorists arriving or leaving Flinders. Flinders The sculpture is a great work of art and it is an appropriate enhancement to the community and the landscape in general Flinders The sculpture is a significant addition to the street scape of Flinders and should be retained in its present position. Flinders The sculpture is an elegant addition to the quite sophisticated village. It provides a focal point, from whichever direction you approach the roundabout. Now that planting and lighting are complete it is beginning to look as though it belongs. I like it very much. It suggests forward thinking and is perhaps the start of a collection for Flinders. Flinders The sculpture is an excellent addition to the Flinders Village. It is visually interesting and surrounded by a well tended garden and lighting. Congrats to the Flinders Residents Association for perservering through the torrent of ill-advised criticism. Flinders The sculpture is inappropriate in the current location, it blends in with the road colour and is insignificant in terms of size and design for the prominent location. There should have been a competition to choose a sculpture. It would be good to have different sculptures on a rotation basis for the site. Flinders The sculpture is invisible, blending into its surroundings in most lights and from all directions. It is meaningless and unattractive. Flinders Village has a great history and some amazing natural attractions that a great artist could exploit to make this important site a feature. Flinders The sculpture is largely 'invisible' to people arriving in Flinders via Wood St during the daytime,as it's lost in the background of trees. Flinders The sculpture is not worthy of it's position on the central village round-about position due to it's insignificant size and stature and importance. Replacement with a selected tree would be more appropriate. Why not move the sculpture to the park? Flinders The sculpture is totally inoffensive in it's present position. It represents a significant work of art by a local resident and should be cherished by the local community who should also be pleased that local people are prepared to make such a generous donation. Flinders The sculpture is totally underwhelming. It is, to me, ugly and out of proportion for the sight. A small flowering gum would have been much cheaper and more pleading to the eye. I find it's title offensive. Flinders The sculpture itself is fine, however the way in which it was introduced to the town and waste of funds raised by the community in a non-consultative fashion by a few individuals

A7265738 Attachment 3

leaves a lot to be desired. It is a distraction in its current location and no other appropriate town location comes to mind. Flinders The sculpture needs to be up close in the park, possibly in the park. Flinders The sculpture on the roundabout has enhanced Flinders village. The new planting and lighting has added to its presentation. Looking back, one is given to wonder what all the fuss was about. Flinders The sculpture should have some relevance to the town of Flinders Flinders The sculpture sits very well in its present location. Why on earth should it be moved? I do think it a pity there are so many road signs around it. Flinders The sculpture was IMPOSED on the community through a flawed process. As a sculpture it has no relevance to our community and is visually displeasing. Our visitors never see it until it is pointed out. Flinders The sculpture was not provided to identify kelp, but rather one of many for commercial use...I understand some have appeared in America (USA). Not especially sculpted for Flinders. Placement: As a general sculpture attraction, perhaps in the monument park area. Flinders The sculptures location has been greatly enhanced by the planting around its base Flinders The sculpture's location is undoubtedly the right place for such a beautiful work of art. Flinders The shape of the sculpture is also symbolic of Flinders beach and its kelp. It settles well in its present position. Flinders The site should be used as a site for different pieces by young artists. The plinth could be part of the design brief. Submissions should be assessed by a small group perhaps headed by Neil Williams who supervises the Montalto Sculpture annual event. Flinders There are several parks in Flinders which would be a better places to display the sculpture Flinders There is nothing creatively engaging about this 'sculpture'. Rather, it is a depressing, sharpish, metal object, definitely doesn't make the heart sing, unlike Phil Price's for instance. I also object to it being trust upon the community by those who like to be in charge. 'Gifted' is emotive and I presume is meant to make me feel ungracious for not liking or accepting the 'sculpture' Flinders There remain some question marks over the process of installing the sculpture. It is not something that will appeal to a lot of people who visit flinders so there needs to be something which appeals to a wider group of visitors to flinders. Something vegetative may have appealed to a wider group of viewers, both locally and visitors. It could still look good in the park or closer to the beach. It is not too late to use the lighting of a beautiful tree! Flinders Think that there are a lot of hard surfaces around this roundabout, something organic like an advanced tree would be more aesthetically pleasing. Flinders This is a beautiful sculpture which should remain in its current position. Flinders is very fortunate to have it. Flinders This is not a special sculpture and not appropriately located. Relocate in park where it can be seen more closely. If a sculpture is required at the intersection, then have one of Matthew Flinders or other relevant subject. Flinders This metalwork does not lift up my soul. Can't see how it celebrates a hard-working fishing and farming community, now replaced by a suburban one, nor its relevance as a 'Welcome to Flinders '. Flinders This piece of "art" is not original - it can be seen in Bourke Street adjacent to Etihad stadium, and at Canberra airport. What a waste of money. It has become a joke that is used to put Flinders down - visitors always bag it and laugh at local government for their decision to support a powerful minority It is an eye sore and has nothing to do with the history of the town A more appropriate piece would be a statue of Matthew Flinders This hunk of metal could be moved to the park adjacent to the kindergarden

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders This piece of "artwork" does not have any relevance to such a beautiful seaside village. Flinders This process was always flawed...Flinders residents have had their donations, which could have gone to far more important, relevant, club causes, "stolen" and effectively donated to the Council. The sculpture has no relevance to the Village..It is now a blight on the landscape and should be removed. There are any number of replicas available on the second-hand market...The "sculpture" is not original by any means. I much preferred the flowering tree, which had been on the roundabout, and which was summarily removed...An absolute DISGRACE ! Flinders This sculpture is better suited in the community park. A more suitable option for the roundabout is a tree that will become significant. Flinders Village identity is being compromised by this sculpture, 2 ped crossings with flashing lights etc Flinders This sculpture is not original it is a copy of many..it is depressing and not representative of our new vibrant village seeking tourism.. It's top heavy balance generates a feeling of uneasiness and instability.. Rogers should be ashamed of it..and give the money back. A natural tree would be preferable.. Flinders This sculpture lacks artistic merit,it is dull and uninspiring, inappropriate in scale and colour for the current location. There should be a competition to enable residents to choose something relevant for such a prominent location. Alternatively we could have a succession of sculptures on a rotation basis with other communities like on the freeway/Cranbourne Rd corner Flinders This sculpture reflects nothing pertaining to Flinders or it's surrounds or it's history. Flinders This survey is too simplistic. This is an opportunity to ask people what they would like, or not like, to have. Flinders This ugly sculpture does not deserve such a prominent position. Flinders This was a badly managed project that seriously divided the town. The sculpture "I am" was not an original piece created for Flinders, but one of many similar designs elsewhere. A tree or a garden would be preferable in the roundabout. Flinders To move the sculpture would be wicked waste of rate payers money. The sculpture looks wonderful where it is, and seen by the many visitors to the town. Well done to those who were responsible for the gift and installation. Flinders Up Ranald Macdonal's arse!! Flinders Very happy with the sculpture and the location Flinders we are new residents & think the sculpture is fine & location good. Flinders We find it underwhelming in that prime location, but have not voted 'no' above because it could be replaced with something worse..... Flinders We have had overseas friends who have specifically asked to see our sculpture and praised it's position. Please tell undecided ratepayers it isn't a letterbox but a world famous piece of art! Flinders We love it. Flinders We love this art, and are also appreciative of having something to look that contrasts with the increasing uniformity of the ugly & boring box shops being built in the main street. Flinders We think it adds to the town and suits the area beautifully Flinders We think the sculpture and its location is very appropriate for Flinders and totally approve of both. There should be even more public art on display in the Flinders area. Flinders What a wonderful gift to flinders , a lovely entrance to our beautiful town. Flinders what is the sculptures relevance to Flinders? Flinders With all the visitors We have received at this stage no one has commented on the sculpture when asked and shown the sculpture the Park is the preferred site where it would stand out. Flinders Wonderful project. Congratulations to all involved. I appreciate it every time I go around the roundabout.

A7265738 Attachment 3

Flinders Works well there, how about more public sculptures? Flinders Would love it to be even bigger. Flinders You could have some nicer planting around the sculpture. Flinders and The sculpture is a major work of Andrew Rogers and is worthy of placement in the current Brighton prominent position at the intersection of Cook and Wood streets in Flinders. Similar works from the series are held in the NGV and were on display recently. Flinders and I don't know what to make of the sculpture. I don't find it attractive or even interesting. To Northcute me it is an eyesore. It is not even a joke. A modern style statue of Bass and Flinders, their boat and even Flinders'cat would be more meaningful for Flinders. Finally, i recall a lot of unhappiness and resentment as to the process for its selection. Flinders and I think it is great that the council saw fit to commission a work of public art. I would love Northcute there to be more works of public art around the shire and in the Flinders village. I very much like Andrew Rogers' work. I like the concept and the form; a fabric like substance blowing in the wind and the undulating swirling motion is very evocative of the sea, sailing boats, maritime work and marine life. So I want to say that I am very pleased this has happened. However my significant reservation is that it is much too small for the site; it doesn't occupy the space, it should be at least three times higher. If Andrew has such a work available (I have seen examples !) may be he could replace this one with a larger version ! The surrounding buildings, the pub in particular, and the space around it dominate the work itself, it should be the other way round. I don't want these comments to be in anyway construed as detracting from the Shire's achievement in seeing this project to its completion. Flinders and The sculpture appears to be a twisted boot, and is meaningless. Possibly site it near the Ringwood Hall. Flinders and as a piece of artwork I feel it is completely LOST in it's present location. Perphaps in a Rye prominant position in a park would be better. Flinders and The sculpture relates to nothing of flinders, looks like a piece of carpet underlay. I am sure Shoreham something more relevant could be provided. Perhaps something related to the cable station. What a waste of money! Flinders and It doesn't represent Flinders in any way. It is top heavy and ego driven. It would be far The Patch better to have local adults + kids creating something using old wood from Flinders Pier, surrounded by indigenous plants. Then it would really represent Flinders. Whenever I see it, I think of a sardine dying in agony. Albert Park I think it looks fine there, less imposing than I expected but great when lit at night.I would be sorry to see it moved. Armadale Impressive piece of work, appropriately positioned, which enhances the village. Armadale Interesting, partly because of its quirkiness and similarity to kelp ---very "Flinders" as I remember and cherish the village over the last 45 years Armadale It has matured into its position & complements its surroundings. To relocate from its prominent standing will be demeaning to this artistic piece. Armadale it is suitably positioned where it is and has grown on me over time - it is suitably abstract to not be too ostentatious and is made from quality material as best as i can determine Arthurs Seat/ Dromana/ Safety Beach I enjoy the piece where it is, as well as the controversy it has evoked. Arthurs Seat/ Dromana/ Safety Beach I think it looks great. Arthurs Seat/ Dromana/ Please don't cause any more controversy and nastiness of the "Flinders People" to each Safety Beach other.

A7265738 Attachment 3

Arthurs Seat/ The name "I am" is the name of the God of the Bible. It is blasphemy and sacrilegious to Dromana/ use the name "I am" for anything else. It is Unrespectful to believing Jews and Christians. I Safety Beach urge you to take this into consideration in decisding whether to put this sculpture anywhere. All due respect to the skill of the craftsman. Arthurs Seat/ Dromana/ The sculpture is a great work of art for the public and the Cook & Wood Streets Safety Beach roundabout a great place for it to be displayed. Ashburton As a frequent visitor to Flinders, I think the sculpture has great impact as you drive into town. Balnarring/ Although not an engaging piece for me, and with a title which I find rather difficult, Balnarring because of religious sensitivities, (traditionally, it is the name of God, which is used by Beach/Merricks Jesus multiple times in John's Gospel). I am generally a supporter of public art, so I do not Nth object. I find it slightly ironic, in such a wealthy village. Balnarring/ Balnarring Beach/Merricks On the corner of the park so people can see it on the round. With worrying about be run Nth over by cars and will make the rounder safer to negotiated as car driver Balnarring/ Balnarring Perhaps near the park, or on the foreshore where it isn't so "in your face" and those Beach/Merricks interested in observing it more closely can do so, without it being a defining feature of the Nth whole town. Balnarring/ Balnarring Beach/Merricks The sculpture does not represent what it is purported to & has no relevance to the Nth township, I'd ask for a refund. It is depressing, & not skillful. Balnarring/ Balnarring Beach/Merricks Nth the sculpture should remain where it is. Balnarring/ Balnarring Beach/Merricks Until a proposal is put forward for a suitable replacement and for the relocation of the Nth current sculpture, it should in my view remain. Balwyn North Very happy with the sculpture and location- we have holiday house in Flinders Black Rock I have a house opposite the sculpture in Barker Street. It causes me no offence. I think it is an excellent addition to the sense of place and identity of the Flinders township. I would welcome sculpture scattered across the township and rural properties as a feature of the local area. These sculptures could be marked on a trail map. Box Hill Storm in a teacup. The sculpture is not outrageous as some of its opponents would have had us believe Brighton Art is art. People will have different views on the art - that's how art works. But I think the issue here might really be the process for getting the sculpture there in the first place. Maybe there concerns were valid at the time - I don't know. But that should now be put in the past. Brighton I like the location of the sculpture and consider it a generous gift to the Flinders community. Brighton I like the sculpture and think it looks great when lit. Brighton It's a gorgeous opening to the town and a welcome site after the drive from town. It suits the environment and has lifted the round about more than I can describe! Brighton The positioning of the sculpture fails to blend in with the Village/ Country location. Brit Brit The sculpture is perfectly suited to the position on the roundabout as a focal point to the entrance to Flinders village, also it looks superb floodlit at night.

A7265738 Attachment 3

Camberwell I would prefer a simpler sculpture I have seen a very similar sculpture in an exhibition in Sydney (Unfurling) so there is nothing unique to Flinders Camberwell If it must be moved, put it in the town park on Cook St Camberwell The current location does not do justice to an impressive piece of work. It needs to be viewed in an uncluttered location - perhaps near the monument or in the park between the store and Opp shop. Canterbury The art work is not very meaningful, and is best displayed in a location that is more appropriate (related to the subject matter of the art) Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ Rosebud Amazing texture and looks exactly like large kelp Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ I am very happy for the sculpture to stay where it is. It is a wonderful asset to the Flinders Rosebud Village. Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ I think it brings a different element to the town, it's something you discuss as it's a real Rosebud feature. Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ I think it looks great especially now that it has the lights on it at night, It adds a focal piont Rosebud to the village and I think the shire should be very proud of it. Cape Schanck/ It may be very 'modern' and all, but it is simply not attractive. An odd shape, it has no Boneo/ Fingal/ sense of being grounded in the space where it is located. Also, to my mind, the shape and Rosebud its title hace nothing to do with Flinders. Flinders is an historic Peninsula town. Surely a sculpture could be purchased that has a connection with this place. Thank you for listening. Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ Rosebud Its not relavent to flinders heritage Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ Rosebud put it in the park Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ The location is entirely unsuitable for a sculpture such as this as it has no historical or Rosebud other relevance to Flinders, it should be relocated in the gardens. Cape Schanck/ The sculpture is misplaced in that location, a tree would be much more beautiful than Boneo/ Fingal/ something that looks like a remnant from a carpet shop display blowing in the wind, more Rosebud reminiscent of rubbish than the noble glory that is customarily the focus of a town sculpture. It is even a poor example of modern sculpture and a distraction there where traffic is of primary concern. Some years ago we saw the sad loss of mature cypresses from outside the Flinders pub and whenever I enter that intersection I remember how majestic the town looked with those beautiful sculptural forms, could we not attempt to bring about a replacement even if only a single tree to help restore something of Flinders' past heritage grandeur at that intersection. Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ Rosebud The sculpture looks great where it is. Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ Toilet amenities required at playground. Rubbish bins along main street and playground. Rosebud Info board updated including nearest petrol station. Cape Schanck/ Boneo/ Fingal/ Rosebud waste of money, should reflect something from area, looks like rolled up cardboard

A7265738 Attachment 3

Clifton Hill Location at busy roundabout seems incongruent, and lighting at night is not effective as the sculpture is hard to see because of the colouring of the materials. Clifton Hill The sculpture in its current location is viewed by everybody coming into Flinders, everybody in the main street, everybody going to the pub, every body having a picnic on the reserve and and everybody going to the pier. Corio The sculpture is not uniquely Flinders I have seen very similar sculptures elsewhere (in Sydney) and do not feel that it reflects the village of Flinders Cosgrove I think "I Am" looks fundamentally out of place in Flinders. It would be better suited to a metro area. Taking a sculture which resembles scrapmetal, giving it a grand, all- encompassing title, and then putting it in a town like this more resembles a plot from "The Vicar of Dibley" than real life. Crib Point Fantastic sculpture. Beautifully cast. Crib Point My first impression of it was a crumpled piece of rubbish. A better idea for the roundabout would be a canary island palm tree. Darling Point, The sculpture is beautiful and such a great initiative. I know of people that have visited NSW Flinders specifically to see the sculpture (myself included). Doreen It is in Flinders for a particular reason and whatever it is named as it should remain. It has a reason for its shape size and is considered a worthy piece of art in a strategic location as is shown. Great works - keep it and appreciate it. East Melbourne i think it looks great where it is. It adds some mystery and fun to the arrival in Flinders East Sculpture is three dimensional art that enhances its setting if it is tastefully creative. This Melbourne sculpture does that and adds to Flinders being a place of interest and beauty. There should be more such additions to the village to add to its appeal. It is a very positive addition. Well done to whoever organised it- I had nothing to do with it. Fish Creek Looks pretty bad where it is. Might suit outside the regional gallery or somewhere like a modern sculpture park outside Flinders. Glen Iris The sculpture is totally inappropriate for our seaside village. It is incredibly ugly. Hastings Currently the sculpture is in a prominent position in which it looks ugly. A more pleasing work of art should be in this position of importance. This sculpture would look okay in a park situation. Thanks :) Hastings Looks terrible take the traffic lights out too! Location: off end of the pier Hawthorn After all the concerns, we think the sculpture fits in very well in its current location. If anything, it is devalued by all the placards and signs on the south-west corner! Hawthorn I think it is in the perfect position. The focal point as you enter Flinders. Different. Innovative. The lighting is wonderful. Hawthorn It is a progressive look for a small town . Hawthorn The destination that is the round about is weakened by this sculpture and misses a special opportunity of height, to give a sense of arrival. I would like to see a native tree planting that attracts the native bird life and is allowed to become a large canopy tree to provide shade and sanctuary to native birds and a joy for future generations Hawthorn The sculpture is a wonderful entrance statement to the village and is a regular talking point by visitors. Hawthron East I honestly don't understand all the fuss. Hawthron East The sculpture is an inappropriate work in what has been shown to be an important position in Flinders. It reads as a personal expression and in no way commemorate or acknowledges the 150 year history of the village. It is an average work in a well 'travelled' style. A figurative work with links to the area would be more appropriate. Hawthron East this art work, while worthy in itself, in no way represents Flinders. Karingal Would prefer a sculpture that reflects something of the character and history of Flinders. i.e. Matthew Flinders and or a fishing village theme. Thanks folks.

Kew i think it is beautiful, by a local world renowned sculptor, and we should be proud to have it there. I am sorry that the council has to spend money reviewing this decision. Kew The maintenance of planting around the sculpture is very important. The current planting has enhanced the site. Lower Plenty We like the sculpture and would be happy for it to stay in its present position. Main Ridge I have heard said it shouldnt be there I have also heard criticism of it. I guess everyone isn't going to enjoy everything thier loss !! Main Ridge I personally don't like the sculpture at all and find it distracting when driving past. I could however imagine it in a sculpture garden perhaps like the one in Sweden's Carl Milles Garden, which features many works by Rodin. Main Ridge It does not appear to have any meaning . I cannot see that the sculpture has any relevance to anything at Flinders . Perhaps a stately , shady tree might be better ?? Main Ridge This sculpture is a fabulous coup for Flinders and it should be embraced. The artist is a world wide phenomenon and the hysterical excuses to remove the sculpture are an embarassment and indicative of a nimby or small minded attitude. I would love to have it on my road or property..... Main Ridge ugly and meaningless to visitors Malvern I am not opposed to the sculpture being moved as I think the roundabout does not do it justice, eg not easy to view and contemplate. The gardens would have been a more appropriate setting. However, I think the cost of a move would be prohibitive right now, and would prefer to wait until the Flinders Township strategy is finalised eg are we having a sculpture park? Malvern I do not believe the sculpture is appropriate for the village of Flinders. I suggest the sculpture could be moved to the park at the corner of Cook St and Norman St Malvern Perhaps in the park opposite the Post Office Melbourne The lighting has made a material positive difference at night. Duncan Andrews Mornington Flinders is very lucky to have one of Rogers' pieces installed and in such a prominent location. I fail to understand why once it has been installed it would be removed and put elsewhere, it just seems so fruitless. Mornington For people to engage with the work it would be best placed within a park setting. Mornington I would prefer a sculpture that represents flinders history or a connection to the area and or its people at the roundabout. The existing sculpture does not represent the township. Mount Martha As a personal taste, there is much more visually pleasing art that should be displayed, something more reflective of the community spirt Mount Martha Flinders is a historic town who's culture rests on its historic foundations. Why choose a statue that bears no relevance to this? Don't allow Flinders to become the new Portsea by letting the city folk to determine what's best for our country town. The Peninsula has lost most of its identity due to development and Flinders remains one of the only places that looks somewhat like the old Peninsula. Except for the pub. Lord knows how that atrocity got though... Mount Martha Leave it where it is. Don't put it in a park where out won't be noticed and could be vandalised. Leave it where it will be noticed but all that come through the town. New Town, Tas As a previous resident of Flinders coming back recently to see the sculpture was beyond expectations. New Town, Tas wonderful asset to the area No postcode "I am" is not worthy of being displayed at the main intersection of Flinders, as it doesn't provided represent 150 years of history, and quite honestly looks like a roll of carpet at best. It should be replaced with a sculpture more representative of Flinders, something that actually appeals to the public. No postcode Don't believe It represents anything to do with Flinders or the History or Future of the provided community/town.

No postcode Even though it is modern and may not appeal to everyone and I am disappointed by the provided way it was acquired by the community, it has grown on me and I think it should stay. No postcode provided Excellent Thoughtful No postcode I like the sculpture I like where it is and it would devalue Flinders if the great unwashed provided forced it to be removed. It's a wonderful gift to Flinders that the rate payers in general contributed very little too its cost. No postcode I personally love the simplicity and ambiguity of the sculpture and its central location provided makes it a talking point for locals and visitors alike. I work casually at the Flinders hotel and customers are always commenting on the piece. Art is subjective, you can't please everyone! Leave it be. No postcode provided It is perfect as is its location No postcode It looks like a rolled up piece of carpet. Has no replication of the flinders coastal town at provided all. No postcode On occasion it has obscured my view of pedestrians and cyclists when entering the provided roundabout I also consider it an inappropriate structure for the centre of a roundabout. No postcode provided Perfect entrance to the village No postcode provided Put it in Ronald Macdonald's front yard. No postcode the same sculpture is at Canberra airport which diminishes its value to Flinders- it is not provided unique No postcode The sculpture is not an original or ' one off ' It bears no significance to the history of provided Flinders. No postcode We are concerned that there may be a small vocal minority that will oppose the sculpture provided in a negative manner, in the same way that they will oppose any improvements to the Village of Flinders unless the idea is their idea. The Shire does much good work in this area, which is very much appreciated. Thank you ! No postcode provided Why not put it in the park? Portsea The sculpture enhances the streetscape of Flinders & provides a novel attraction for the area,-executed by a local artist. Prahran I like the sculpture in its present location but it could be lager. Prahran I think it is a great addition to the township , street scape and ammenity Red Hill/ Red Haing seen it several times, i find it meaningless and diminishing of the character of Hill Sth Flinders Red Hill/ Red It is an unattractive, meaningless pice of metal charading as 'art'. So some art critic Hill Sth deemed it a notable work and therefore some zeros were added to the price tag. What a shameful waste of money. A lovely tree would have be so much more pleasing and meaningful. Please take that sculpture preferably with a cover over it . Red Hill/ Red Its quite inoffensive, in fact, it should have been taller. Its in place now. Don't waste money Hill Sth by moving it. Red Hill/ Red Hill Sth Selection method still rankles. Red Hill/ Red The sculpture and its location are perfectly fine. What I find offensive is the capricious Hill Sth waste of finite ratepayer dollars and council staff time, unnecessarily reviewing, discussing and prevaricating over issues superfluous to the essential day to day running of local government. If ever there was a "yes minister" moment at Mpsc, this would be it!

Richmond Andrew Rogers is not a significant artist of any merit by any stretch of the imagination. This work is not a unique object, there are editions of it elsewhere in the country, including at Canberra airport. The fact that this work was gifted to the town is beside the point. The fact that the work was donated does not make it a worthy or significant object, and it in no way should it have been accepted simply out of gratitude. There has been no consultation with art experts or art advisors about the cultural significance (or otherwise) of this work. There seems to have been little or no observation of due process in the acceptance of this sculpture. Richmond Good focus on entering Flinders, Keep surrounding planting fresh Richmond I would much rather have a statue of MATTHEW FLINDERS! Thank you. The present sculpture is so dull and, to me, meaningless. My deceased wife had a house in Flinders. I still go there often. Richmond It's not the best sculpture in the world but it challenges people and provides a talking point - and that's one of the purposes of art. It has been improved by the lighting, in so much as you can see it at night and it creates a focal point for the town. Rye/ All good art is contentious and creates discussion. You can't please everyone. However it Tootgarook/ St could also be possible to have rotating art only in place for a set time before being Andrews Beach replaced Rye/ I can't imagine why the council provided funds for a sculpture in the first place, ...but ...it's Tootgarook/ St so UGLY!! Why must councils put flagpoles & sculptures everywhere? The countryside is Andrews Beach attractive without these encumbrances! Rye/ Tootgarook/ St Andrews Beach I really like it, it blends it and would be a shame to move it Rye/ We drove past this sculpture last week with our grandchildren and we all wondered what Tootgarook/ St the heck it was. I think something more relevant to the township of Flinders would be Andrews Beach more appropriate. Shoreham/Poi Definitly a situation of the emperors new clothes. There are many who do know about nt Leo/ international sculptures and are not suduced by the PR.This sculpture has hijacked the Merricks most prominent position in town and given the conciderations of health and safety on our roads and the interesting history of this community it fails on both accounts . Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ I have tried to admire it in that position above, but it still looks like grannies tooth. I think Merricks it would best be exhibited on the south lawn next to the hall in Norman Street. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks I love it where it is. A wonderful welcome to Flinders Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks I think it looks wonderful and really helps to put Flinders on the map, culturally. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ I think the siting of the sculpture enhances the village and is a great tribute to all those Merricks who have lived and worked in Flinders. It will be "lost" if we re-locate it. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks in the park with other vertical elements Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks It is a feature, just get on with it. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks It is very suitable and a generous donation.

Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks It's great to see some public art in a rural area Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks Put it at the end of the pier. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks Ridiculous cost and wanky artistic comments, but it looks good. Shoreham/Poi The sculpture is attractive. Its location is a most appropriate entry centred-piece to the nt Leo/ township. The sculpture has improved the presentation of the traffic-circle, does not make Merricks a traffic hazard & is art form of which Flinders' residents should feel proud. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks The sculpture is so suited to that site - gives a touch of class to the village centre. Shoreham/Poi the sculpture obscures the view of the war memorial from the centre of town. As can be nt Leo/ seen from the old photos of Flinders exhibited in the past it was the intention of the Merricks original positioning of the monument to be seen from a distance. the sculpture interferes with the historical concept of where the monument was placed. (ie the "shrine" is not obscured by other buildings etc. and respect for war dead!) Live in area and shop in Flinders mail etc for over 30 years. Shoreham/Poi This artwork was intended to celebrate Flinders 150th year and its choice with no tender nt Leo/ process created significant community angst. As one of hundreds of works of very similar Merricks design it bears no particular relevance to Flinders or the region, so moving it to another location would help settle community concern and enable it to be better appreciated in more contemplative surrounds. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ This sculpture was decided by a few. It's location is not ideal. At the very least it should be Merricks relocated to a park where it can be enjoyed visually and as a tactile exhibition. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ This survey is a ridiculous waste of ratepayers money. The position of the sculpture was Merricks decided by a majority vote. To survey now is a pure waste of money (our money). Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks Very appropriate entry to Flinders. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ Merricks We would like the sculpture to stay at the roundabout. Shoreham/Poi nt Leo/ What a waste of rate payer's money! A majority vote has already been taken so why revisit Merricks the issue after all this time. NOT HAPPY! Somers Although it"s a shame it's not in a good place to be able to get close to it. If it is moved don't hide it in some no mans land or it will be vandalised Somers Anywhere else Somers I love this sculpture, and where it as a prominent art feature in Flinders. Every time I drive into Flinders I love it. To me it is reminiscent of legs, joyfully dancing in a flowing dress Somerville It's distracting to drivers and people don't have the opportunity to admire it properly when it's in the middle of an intersection. Somerville Put it at the beach with the other kelp. Toilets in the park for families. Rubbish bins in Main Street Info Centre for visitors.

Sorrento I consider this beautiful, unfurling sculpture to be perfectly placed and a wonderful asset for Flinders. I wish other towns on the Peninsula ( such as Sorrento ) would follow the example that Flinders has set. South Yarra Andrew is an internationally recognised artist and we would be greatful that he has donated this wonderful piece to little old Flinders Village! It would be a travesty and a 'slap in the face' to relocate it. Art is controversial and that's how it should stay. South Yarra I have always been totally behind the present positioning of the sculpture at this central location, welcoming visitors to the town. It is great that the town has embraced a modern sculpture by such a highly acclaimed sculptor who lives in the area. Please do not remove it from this site. South Yarra I wholeheartedly approve of Andrew Roger's sculpture "I am" and it's location. The present placement provides a confident entrance to Flinders from the Shoreham approach and a sophisticated view as one approaches the roundabout down Cook Street. Please don't move it ! South Yarra This review is an absolute waste of time and resources and underscores a complete lack of accountability at council. The decision had been made. The sculpture is in place. The people of Flinders have provided something that was lacking. Southbank I find the sculpture too small for its site. The finish is also disappointingly dull. A shame that the community does not feel 'ownership' of the sculpture which a competition would have facilitated. St Kilda I love it St Kilda The positioning of the sculpture provides an unexpected, interesting greeting to all coming into Flinders. A symbol to 'expect the unexpected', in this small vibrant community by the sea. Surrey Hills I think the sculpture is fabulous and wish it's size was a little larger Thornbury I love the seeing the sculpture as I come into the Flinders township. I think it fits in well and should remain where it is. Toorak A very good focal point for Flinders. Toorak I think the sculpture would benefit from much more substantial and artistic landscaping surrounding it, it looks very bare at present. Toorak This sculpture is the best thing that has happened in Flinders in the last 30 years It is fantastic and adds an interesting focus on arrival. Toorak To me, the sculpture is a modern, lyrical and reflective piece. I like arriving in Flinders and seeing it very much. Williamstown It’s a pleasure to drive into Flinders (from my place in Shoreham) and see Andrew Rogers’ I Am, marking the entrance to an historic village. The community has seen fit to embellish this site with a splendid metallic coil that opens golden to one side, and is arresting by day and night. To support so contemporary a public sculpture is testimony to forward thinking and optimism.
