Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin Looky here! Our two guests at this small plate supper are people you’ll easily recognize! The McKelvys of Beacher fame. We regular supper club members (neighbors Pat Latchford, Eileen Henry and I) invite two guests each time, and I was hostess that evening. We generally meet every two months. The McKelvys are an entertaining couple. That evening they enter- tained us with their Non-Motor Oil Coleslaw (sorry, no recipe for that strange-name concoction, though I’ll admit it tasted grand). Think Sunday mornings in downtown Chicago, and you would think that you would have the Loop to yourself. Wouldn’t you? Of course you would, unless, of course, you were one of some 25,000 souls out there in Grant Park at 9:30 a.m. on April 2, 2006 ready to run the LaSalle Bank’s annual 8-kilometer foot tour of the Windy City known as the Shamrock Shuffle. Thanks to the good offices of my good friends Chris and Linda Pobocik of Three Oaks, I just happened to be part of that happy throng out there on a damply cool Sunday morning waiting to run five miles on the following course: -North on Columbus (from the start near the Buckingham Fountain) to Grand; Traffic was heavy at the start. -West on Grand to State; -South on State to Jackson; -West on Jackson to Clinton; -South on Clinton to Van Buren; -East on Van Buren to Michigan; -South on Michigan to Roosevelt; -East on Roosevelt to Columbus; -North a short ways on Columbus to the finish chute. Got all that?

Crossing the Chicago River on the State Street . Granted, you won’t be alone in Grant Park as you begin your circumnavigation of the Art Institute, but, as I discovered this April 2, you will be in excel- lent company. I, for one, was in the outstanding company of my aforementioned friends Chris and Linda Pobocik. Not only did they register this computer illiterate on-line, but they delivered me to the starting line in style in their new Toyota. And, yes, we knew to avoid Chris Pobocik is checked in the Dan Ryan by taking the Indiana Tollroad to the and ready to run with the Linda Pobocik was all smiles Chicago Skyway to Stony Island to the Drive. cheetahs. through the Shamrock Shuffle. Chris was way, way up ahead swimming with the barracudas, and Linda and I got separated just before our school of guppies forded the Chicago River (for the first of four times), so I was left to my own devices for more than four miles of the five-mile event. But I didn’t mind, because I didn’t run into one unfriendly person out there. In fact, I didn’t run into any one, and no one ran into me. And that’s quite amaz- ing considering our sheer mass and determination.

There was no time to shop at Field’s.

There were lots of great good- ies after the race.

Chris and Linda were similarly exhilarated at the finish, and so after restoring our lost calories at tables, we motored back to Michigan just as a cold, driving rain started to fall. Get your Gatorade right here!! Some (25,000) people have all the luck. So, you are probably asking, what was it like to run around the city with 25,000 pumped-up people from every imaginable runof life? Just wild. That’s what it was -- wild and wacky, and the most fun we ever thought we could have on a Sunday morning. Chris was seeded way up front with the gazelles and cheetahs, so he had to take his fun on the fly. But Linda and I started way back with the “open” group, so we took our pleasure at a more leisurely pace. We real- ly didn’t have much choice for the first mile, because Team Pobocik at ease after running around Chicago.
