THE CHURCH CLOCK

Hopefully, everyone will be aware that the church clock has finally been fixed. It has been a long journey starting with problems with the clock weights jamming which was found to be caused by the timber beam which supports the weights having dropped due to infestation and rot to the beam ends. This beam was removed and replaced with a new oak beam and the weights set further apart allowing unobstructed movement. The next problem was that the hands on the east face had seized up externally and could only be accessed from the outside. It was therefore necessary for a further visit for the engineer to abseil down the face of the tower to remove the hands, remove the dial motion equipment and to dismantle and clean, polishing all pivots and bushes. The outer ends were then cleaned freeing the gap between the minute spindle and hour pipe. All was then reassembled, lubricated and re-greased before being refitted. Thanks are due to Pat Brown who has kept an eye on progress and does a splendid job winding and keeping the clock on time. The final cost of all this work amounted to £5,022. St Mary’s PCC is grateful for the generous donations received from Abbfest, Friends of St Mary’s, AbbPast and especially from the many donations, large and small, from the villagers of Abbotskerswell who have helped to bring this task to fruition.

Monthly Rainfall Totals 2018 mm ins. January 137.0 5.39 February 51.0 2.01 March 238.0 9.37

What an incredible month for weather we have just had. First of all, a caveat on the figures I am sending because of the snow. On both occasions we had so much snow and with the cold and wind there was no doubt that very little of it got into the rain gauge, so I have had to estimate the equivalent rainfall figures for those two occasions based on the fact that 10 inches of snow is more or less an inch of rain. Despite this, March has been by far and away the wettest I have ever recorded and more than 3 times the average of the last 7 years. I reckon that we have had 9.37 ins or 238mm, whereas the average is 3.00ins. Kindly supplied by David Munden

The Chordettes Sing for Arthritis Association On an incredibly wet evening in March over 40 ladies of all ages from this friendly chorus attended St Pauls Church Hall, Newton Abbot. The Chordettes were delighted to perform for the Arthritis Association. The appreciative audience enjoyed popular songs by modern artists including Adele and Pharrell Williams, as well as firm favourites from across the decades and much- loved hits from the musicals. Between each section of songs from the repertoire, new Musical Director, Sue Baxter explained to the audience the importance of each of the four part harmony sections of the chorus in contributing to the overall sound, even though sometimes each part is singing a separate tune. Sue Baxter said “The chorus sang wonderfully well. It was especially lovely to have our 3 new basses and 2 new baritones singing with us. I am extremely impressed with how quickly they are learning the songs.” The chorus is available for bookings at private and charity events. They are currently running free ‘Welcome Wednesday’ taster sessions on the first Wednesday of each month if you would like to find out more and try singing with The Chordettes. The chorus meet 7pm to 10pm in Abbotskerswell Village Hall. You don’t need to be able to read music ‒ new members are fully supported and provided with teacher tracks as well as sheet music. For more details email [email protected]. Chorus members benefit from learning singing techniques, breathing skills, how to sing in harmony, understanding vocal range, vocal warm ups, listening skills, building confidence, making new friends and most importantly, having fun!

Dolphins—A story by Pam Wakeham

“Are we there yet?” said the voice from the back seat. “Nearly” said his father. Sam and Kath had saved and saved to buy a small cabin cruiser for them and their two children, Amy and Pete. Now at last the big day was here and the first voyage about to happen. Just to France and back. Everything checked and re- checked. Lockers full of food and clothing. Clambering on board they waited for the tide to turn, then excitedly they cast off and headed out of harbour. Before long they were enveloped in an enormous bank of fog. They then had no idea where they were. Fog horns sounded now and then but apart from that, nothing. Sam switched off and they drifted on in a completely silent world. “We seem to be going sideways” said Kath. “Be out of it soon” replied Sam. But on they drifted and it was getting darker. They put on the running lights and huddled in the cabin for warmth. On the second day they were still encased in the fog. Sam put out a ‘Mayday’. “We will try and pin point your signal” said the Coastguard, “but it will still take a fair time to find you’. And on they drifted. On the radio they heard a search was in progress for them but still they drifted. On the third morning they awoke still in the fog. Sam tried the engine but it wouldn’t work. Later Kath said quietly “we seem to be lower in the water”. A worried looking Sam disappeared to the engine compartment but was soon back, “we are sinking” he whispered. They quickly launched the life raft, grateful they had bought a good one. They piled in food and clothing and cast off and only minutes later watched in horror as the boat went down and still they drifted. On the morning of the fourth day they awoke to a clear sky and around noon the spotter plane found them and began circling overhead. Moments later they heard a squeaking noise and a sort of tapping. Looking over the side they found they were surrounded by a school of dolphins, all looking up at them with big smiles on their faces. The four lined up behind them, put their noses against the raft and began to push. Others swam along side and kept it straight. “Dad, what are they doing?” asked Amy. “I think” said Sam “they are trying to save us” and they all sat there in utter amazement as the dolphins pushed on. Now and then the four pushers changed over to a new four. Overhead the plane was radioing in the amazing sight below. An hour later the coastguard arrived but Sam waved them to keep back, lest they injure the dolphins, who were not giving up for anybody and pushed on past the astonished crew lining the rails. Three hours later they saw the coast appearing and still the dolphins pushed on with the coastguard trailing behind. Other boats were coming out to meet them now and the coastguard radioed for a clear passage to be left for the raft. By now newsreel helicopters were overhead and beaming this extraordinary scene to the whole world. Thousands lined the cliff tops and millions were glued to their television screens. Hundreds of boats were now lined up on each side of the clear corridor and as the raft entered it, horns, sirens, whistles and cheers rang out as still the dolphins pushed on. They were getting excited now, leaping and jumping, two kept standing upright on their tails but on they pushed right up to the launching ramp where many willing hands pulled the raft in and helped the family out on shaky legs. They turned round, the dolphins were quiet now and all watching the family with just their heads sticking out of the water but with a great big smile on every face. Kath walked to the edge and with tears running down her face she called out to them “Thank you, thank you dear friends, you saved our lives”. The dolphins waited for a few more moments then turned as one and leaping and jumping they bolted for the sea. Sirens and cheers rang out again as they passed through the lines of craft and disappeared.

Perhaps warmer drier weather is almost here. Gardens and gardeners are coming out of hibernation. The sound of lawnmowers can be heard in the village and the spring flowers have recovered from the snow. 2018 will be the eleventh year that the village has taken part in the National Gardens Scheme. This year eight gardens and the village allotments will be open on Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th of June. The gardens range from large to small, traditional to modern and include a new garden with the emphasis on wildlife and wild flowers. There is something for all tastes, with lots of interest for both keen gardeners and those who just like looking at gardens. As usual, Church House will be open on both days for brilliant teas, cakes etc. At several of the gardens, there will be additional attractions of plant, book and produce sales. The village will again be holding a scarecrow competition and entrants will be on display during Open Gardens weekend. See elsewhere in this edition of ABBTALK for more about the competition. The National Gardens Scheme is in its ninety- first year. In the last ten years alone it has raised more than £25 million for the charities it supports. This year over £3 million will go to the scheme’s selected charities. It is the largest single donor to Macmillan Cancer Support, for which it has raised almost £15 million and Marie Curie Cancer Care, almost £7million. Among the other charities which benefit from the scheme are Hospice UK, Parkinson’s UK and the MS Society. In addition to its charity donations, the NGS sponsors work on Gardening and Heath. Every penny of the admission price goes to charity – none goes to the gardeners and the scheme’s running cost are met through sponsorship.

Abbotskerswell Twinning Association

Going back to their childhood was on the cards for members of the Abbotskerswell Twinning Association at their April meeting when the entertainment was a table-top games night.

This followed a meal and a few glasses of wine which helped things along. The final scores reflected the skill shown by members, the scores being much lower than those attained by any random group of 5-year olds. To avoid any ugly scenes all teams were awarded chocolates at the end. The next meeting in May is when our friends from France make their bi-annual trip across the Channel.

To all you photographers out there......

In the last 4 weeks AbbTalk has received so many positive reactions to the wonderful snow pictures we used in the April issue. Quite right too ‒ there were some great photos. And those photos were taken by you ‒ our readers and fellow villagers. Some were taken on high quality cameras, some on simple cameras and many using your mobile phones. So come on, the snow has gone now but our lovely village has so many beautiful views and scenes. Views and scenes that could be on the front page of AbbTalk. We need ‘upright’ format photos of high quality. And make them current scenes ‒ no snow scenes in August, no trees and gardens in full bloom in December. Don’t forget to say where they are, what they show and your name if you would like a mention. E-mail them to me at [email protected] and I will do my best to use them. Or, if the picture is a print, drop them in at 3 Laburnum Court, near Church House.

Ethical Investing for everyone

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)

Ethical investing has been with us for many years, with Friends Provident’s Stewardship Fund of 1984 one of the earliest funds in the sector. In the 1980s and beyond, environmental concerns gained more attention in the wake of disasters such as Bhopal and Exxon Valdez followed by increasing public awareness of climate change.

ESG Funds are growing in popularity, not only with people who have a social conscience, but also for hard-nosed investors driven by the motive for profit.

The Investment Association’s latest figures for ethical funds revealed £1.03bn of sales in 2017 compared with 2016’s £625m and assets under management (AUM) in ethical funds increased from £4.53bn in 2008 to £15.4bn in 2017.

Demand for socially responsible company shares is driven by four main factors:

• First the institutional side of the investment market has increasingly demanded that some or all the ESG disciplines are applied to their portfolios • The second big driver has been government action and legislation globally which encourages (or forces) companies to act ethically. • Asset managers have embraced ESG by building significant teams of managers and analysts to offer ESG- based products but also to incorporate the processes and techniques across portfolios in general. • The final driver is increasing public awareness and higher demand for products that embrace ethical principles and reflected in the substantially increased inflows to ethical funds.

One of the reasons fund managers have increased their ethical analysis is that ESG can help identify risks that other approaches may not and in some cases even identify stocks and shares to hold. For example, much has been made of warnings which were very clear to analysts, using an environmental and governance framework, regarding BP before the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

The increased due diligence applied by ethical funds before investing can also identify more ordinary issues such as accounting errors or fraud, that might escape a lighter touch analysis.

At Hedgelands we have a number of ethical portfolios to suit the needs of investors looking for income or growth, or a combination of the two. These can be incorporated in pensions, ISAs or investment bonds.
