Speaker Biographies

Ralph Smith, JD • Senior Vice President, Annie E. Casey Foundation

Along with serving as Senior Vice President of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Ralph Smith is Managing Director for the Campaign for Grade Level Reading, a national effort to increase rates of third-grade reading proficiency, especially for children from low-income families. From 1975 to 1997, he sat on the faculty of the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania, teaching corporate law, securities regulations, and education law and policy. He served on the boards of Leap Frog Enterprises, Inc., from 2005 to 2009 and Nobel Learning Communities, Inc., from 2007 to 2011. He also served on the boards of Venture Philanthropy Partners and the Center for Responsible Lending. Mr. Smith also has held a number of senior leadership positions for the School District of Philadelphia, including chief of staff, senior consultant, and special counsel. He received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University of Los Angeles, and a J.D. from the University of California, and served as a teaching fellow and LLM/ SJD candidate at Harvard University.

Peter Winograd, PhD • Director, Center for Education Policy Research

Peter Winograd has been deeply involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of New Mexico’s major education reform initiatives including: early childhood care and education; statewide longitudinal education data systems; high school redesign and college readiness; and teacher and principal recruitment, preparation, retention, and evaluation. As the Director of the Center for Education Policy at the University of New Mexico, he furthers the mission to conduct independent research on a wide range of education issues and to use that research to strengthen the efforts of policy makers, educators, and citizens in meeting the challenges facing New Mexico. Dr. Winograd’s previous experience includes serving as the Education Policy Advisor to Governor Richardson for two years and the Director of the New Mexico Office of Education Accountability in the Department of Finance and Administration for six years. Dr. Winograd received his doctoral degree from the University of Illinois.

Alan Webber • Author • • Founder, Fast Company

As one of the most widely respected and knowledgeable leaders in business today, Alan Webber brings audiences unusual depth of knowledge and insight into an fueled by information, change, and innovation. An award-winning, nationally-recognized editor, author and , he launched Fast Company, the fastest growing, most successful business magazine in history and winner of two national magazine awards, one for excellence and one for design. He was named Adweek’s Editor of the Year in 1999, along with co-founding editor William Taylor. Before founding FC, Mr. Webber was the managing editor and editorial director of the Harvard Business Review for five years. His columns and articles have appeared in numerous national publications, including The Los Angeles Times, , and The Washington Post. He is coauthor of three business-related books, including most recently, his first eBook,The Global Detective. Speaker Biographies

Deanna Sauceda • President and COO, Cauze Marketing

Best know to New Mexicans for her many years as a broadcast journalist, Deanna Sauceda now develops partnerships between non-profits, business, and the media through unique marketing solutions, tactical philanthropy, and an insider’s knowledge of television, print and social networks. Before launching her marketing firm, Ms. Sauceda was an anchor at the CBS/ Fox affiliates KRQE 13 and KASA Fox 2, where she won numerous awards including an Edward R. Murrow Award, Emmy, and AP awards for continuous coverage of the Los Alamos fires. While working in broadcast news, she founded the Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award and Scholarship after reading the story of Amy’s death on the air. At that time, she was on the Board of Directors for New Mexico Voices for Children, which has since sponsored the award. Over the past 20 years, the award has honored Amy and recognized hundreds of New Mexico youth working to make the world a better place. In 2000, Ms. Sauceda took a five-year break from journalism and worked for Intel as Communication Manager for a new Fab in Colorado Springs. She became a Project and Marketing Manager for an Intel startup, Community Solutions. This team went into stressed communities like the ghettos of New Delhi, hospitals in Malaysia, and the Navajo Nation and identified Intel Solutions to help the people there.
