Most teachers, though, have been trained in the belles lettres tradition, and their competence usually lies with fiction Or poetry. Cultural preference has traditionally held that fiction is the most important form of literature. Analyzing a selection of twentieth century non-fiction prose is difficult; there are too few resources, and conventional analytical methods too often do not fit modern non-fiction. The new journalism, a recent literary genre, is especially difficult to "teach" because it blends fictive and journalistic techniques. -
Television Journalism Awards 2021 Criteria
TELEVISION JOURNALISM AWARDS 2021 CRITERIA Submissions are now invited for the Television Journalism Awards. The awards, for both news and current affairs, seek to recognise creative and excellent journalism by organisations whose broadcasts are transmitted on a UK based platform, such as Freeview, Freesat, Sky or Virgin or who create online video content from a UK production base. The 2021 Awards ceremony will be celebrated on Wednesday 24 February 2021, the format of this event will be confirmed closer to the time but will ensure a proud celebration of nominees and winners. If there are questions on the eligibility of any entry, these should be addressed to Jo Sampson at [email protected]. The Juries will be asked to follow these overarching criteria which apply to all categories. • Quality of the journalism. Juries will be asked to gauge this particularly in the context of the type of market where the entry is mainly targeted. • Impact and resonance with the target audience. Evidence should be submitted separately and may be taken into account by the jury. • Enterprise. Juries be asked to give credit for creative, original, resourceful and imaginative approaches. • Technical quality. Juries will be asked to measure this in the context of production pressures; for example turn-round time and the conditions under which an item is produced. 1 NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL NEWS AWARDS News Coverage – Home The Home News Award is for the best coverage of a major news story in the UK. The award is intended to recognise every aspect of coverage including journalistic enterprise, quality of reporting, picture content, analysis and explanation, and comprehensiveness of overall coverage, including speed of reaction in unexpected or unplanned stories (although a separate award, Breaking News, concentrates specifically on this aspect). -
Ethics for Digital Journalists
ETHICS FOR DIGITAL JOURNALISTS The rapid growth of online media has led to new complications in journalism ethics and practice. While traditional ethical principles may not fundamentally change when information is disseminated online, applying them across platforms has become more challenging as new kinds of interactions develop between jour- nalists and audiences. In Ethics for Digital Journalists , Lawrie Zion and David Craig draw together the international expertise and experience of journalists and scholars who have all been part of the process of shaping best practices in digital journalism. Drawing on contemporary events and controversies like the Boston Marathon bombing and the Arab Spring, the authors examine emerging best practices in everything from transparency and verifi cation to aggregation, collaboration, live blogging, tweet- ing, and the challenges of digital narratives. At a time when questions of ethics and practice are challenged and subject to intense debate, this book is designed to provide students and practitioners with the insights and skills to realize their potential as professionals. Lawrie Zion is an Associate Professor of Journalism at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and editor-in-chief of the online magazine upstart. He has worked as a broadcaster with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and as a fi lm journalist for a range of print publications. He wrote and researched the 2007 documentary The Sounds of Aus , which tells the story of the Australian accent. David Craig is a Professor of Journalism and Associate Dean at the University of Oklahoma in the United States. A former newspaper copy editor, he is the author of Excellence in Online Journalism: Exploring Current Practices in an Evolving Environ- ment and The Ethics of the Story: Using Narrative Techniques Responsibly in Journalism . -

Course Description Proficiency with gathering, analyzing and visualizing data is essential in journalism today as commodity content becomes increasingly ineffective in both serving the public interest and engaging audiences. This two-unit introduction to data journalism builds upon the reporting skills you developed in JOUR 207/307, Reporting and Writing I and II. Those courses focused on identifying and interviewing people as sources. This course introduces you to using data as a source, and “interviewing” datasets using quantitative analysis and data visualization tools. In the past, a “data story” was a big investigation produced by a separate data journalist team that included statisticians and coders. However, good reporting always did include using numbers to compare, contrast and other put facts and opinions into perspective. And “[n]ow, the fear of numbers marks a reporter as one who can only do part of the job,” according to Sarah Cohen, New York Times data journalist and the author of Numbers in the Newsroom, the primary textbook that we’ll use. In this frenzied media climate, it’s more important than ever for journalists to gather and analyze data themselves rather than rely on a source’s summary and interpretation. Thus, this course will start with building the fundamental skills you need to find and use data in basic news stories and beat reporting. -

Contact Info: [email protected]; [email protected]; 917.710.1660 Course Description Students will gain an understanding of visual journalism through theory and practical application while exploring current and emerging story forms. Students will learn video for digital platforms, principles of photography, design for web and mobile platforms, and the roles each play in interactive and engaging storytelling. An emphasis will be placed on narrative, documentary-style video and visual stories for web and social media. Students also will learn elements of design related to typography, layout, engagement and user interface as they apply to journalistic story forms across platforms. Social media will also be an integral outlet for photo and video stories. In addition to providing you with skills necessary to produce journalistic multimedia stories, including videos and audio slideshows, we will also cover an introduction to principles of digital news design, interactivity and presentation. Ethical, legal and social issues affecting visual journalists will be discussed. We will take a practical, hands-on approach in this class. An introduction to photo, audio and video editing software will be provided. A modern mobile device or tablet device with a camera such as the iPhone 7 Plus or Samsung Galaxy S8, will be used as a primary content gathering device in the class. The device, mobile apps (shooting, editing and special purpose) and additional equipment are also major topics addressed during the course. -

I understand that my dissertation may be made electronically available to the public. ii Investing in Yourself: Entrepreneurial Journalism in the Digital Age Maggie Reid, PhD, Communication and Culture Ryerson University, 2018 Abstract This dissertation is grounded in a Critical Political Economy of communication theoretical framework in conjunction with extensive, qualitative interviews with eighteen emerging journalists, three journalism educators from different types of journalism schools (academic, vocational, hybrid) and four editors from different types of news organizations (legacy, public broadcaster, digital first media) in order to navigate between institutional structures and the agency of individual actors. This work examines how the current structural configurations of the news media industry are impacting how emerging journalists negotiate the expectations that they develop personal brands online, including their perceived control and autonomy over their work. -

Broadcast Journalism Course Descriptions and Career Recommendations JOUR 402 Broadcast Reporting The class will focus on writing and reporting well-balanced, comprehensive and visually compelling stories. Undergraduate and graduate students research, report, write, shoot and edit stories. During TV day-of-air shifts in the Annenberg Media Center, students learn how to meet the same deadlines that professional reporters handle in small, medium and large markets. They also put together feature packages and could get the chance to do live shots for the nightly newscasts. This class is a MUST for any student who wants to be a TV reporter in news, sports or entertainment. It is also strongly recommended for students who want to learn how to field produce packages. JOUR 403 Television News Production Students sharpen news judgment and leadership skills by producing live day-of-air television newscasts, creating digital content, and using social media. They make decisions about news coverage, stories and presentation while managing reporters, anchors, writers, editors and many others under deadline pressure. JOUR 403 producers will write, copy edit and supervise live shots. Students have used skills learned in JOUR 403 to excel in jobs including local news producing, news reporting, sports producing and network segment producing. This class is a MUST for any student who wants to be the producer of a TV newscast or other type of live program. It is STRONGLY recommended for students who want to be TV news producers and reporters, sports producers or local/network segment producers. JOUR 405 Non-Fiction Television This class introduces students to the process of producing a documentary for digital and broadcast platforms. -

He changed the viewing habits of Americans, transformed the way in which television covers sport, altered the nature and character of American sport, and transformed the way in which television presents reality to the American public. For all of these reasons Roone Arledge cast a large shadow over America in the second half of the twentieth century. Although the marriage of television and sport had been consummated well before Roone Arledge took up his college football post at ABC television, Arledge changed the nature of the relationship between the two. -

MIT 2002 The State of Multimedia Newsrooms in Europe Martha Stone, Jan Bierhoff Introduction The media landscape worldwide is changing rapidly. In the 1980s, the “traditional” mass media players were in control: TV, newspapers and radio. Newspaper readers consumed the paper at a specified time of the day, in the morning, over breakfast or after work. Radio was listened to on the way to and from work. Television news was watched in the morning mid-day and/or evening. Fast forward to 2002, and the media landscape is fragmented. The consumption of news has changed dramatically. News information is all around, on mobile phones, newspapers, PDAs, TV, Interactive TV, cable, Internet, teletext, kiosks, radio, video screens in hotel elevators, video programming for airlines and much more. Meanwhile, also the concept of news has changed to be more personalised, more service-oriented and less institutional. The sweeping market changes have forced media companies to adapt. This new challenge explains why Dow Jones Company, owner of the Wall Street Journal, now considers itself “a news provider of any news, all the time, everywhere.” In the frame of the MUDIA project (see annex 1), an international team of researchers has taken stock of the present situation concerning media and newsroom convergence in Europe. The various routes taken to this ideal have been mapped in a number of case studies. In total 24 leading European media (newspapers, broadcasters, netnative newscasters) were approached with a comprehensive questionnaire and later visited to interview key representatives of the editorial and commercial departments (see annex 2). The study zoomed in on four countries: the United Kingdom, Spain, France and Sweden; viewpoints from other media elsewhere in Europe were added on the basis of existing literature, and throughout the study a comparison with the USA is made where possible and relevant.
