At least one form of nature protection occurs on 40% of the region's Surface.
In the region there are forest complexes unique in Europe (slightly changed by human activity) like the Białowieska Forest, and environmentally valuable Biebrza and Narew marshes.
„The green nature” of the voivodship requires conducting entrepreneurship in a sustainable way.

Depopulation problems
The main depopulation factors are: negative migration balance and negative birth rate
In comparison to 2013, the number of inhabitants decreased by over 10,000 people.
High level of migration concerns young people aged 25-34.
Inhabitants of the region move to the Mazowieckie Voivodship/ Warsaw (53% of all emigrants in 2013 and 50% in 2017) Low level of enterpreneurship in comparison to Poland
