British Royal Banners 1199 – Present Geoff Parsons & Michael Faul Abstract The presentation begins with the (accepted) date of 1199, the death of King Richard I, the first king known to have used the three gold lions on red. It continues to show how King Edward III added the French Royal Arms, consequent to his claim to the French throne. There is then the change from “France Ancient” to “France Modern” by King Henry IV in 1405, which set the pattern of the arms and the standard for the next 198 years. The story then proceeds to show how, over the ensuing 234 years, there were no fewer than six versions of the standard until the adoption of the present pattern in 1837. The presentation includes pictures of all the designs, noting that, in the early stages, the arms appeared more often as a surcoat than a flag. There is also some anecdotal information regarding the various patterns. Although we often refer to these flags as Royal Standards, strictly speaking, they are not standard but heraldic banners which are based on the Coats of Arms of the British Monarchs. 29 Minoru Ozawa King’s Rune Stones A Catalogue with Some Remarks Minoru OZAWA For those who are interested in Danish history the Jelling dynasty from the second half of the 10th century to 1042 has had a special meaning. The successive 6 kings, i.e. Gorm the Old (–958), Harald Bluetooth (–987), Swein Forkbeard (–1014), Harald (–1018), Canute the Great (–1035), and Hardecnut (–1042), transformed a small Danish kingdom into one of the most influential states in Northern Europe in the 11th century.1 After Gorm and Harald made steadier the foundation of the kingdom the following kings expanded their stage of activty westward to gain booty with their army. In 1013 Swein conquered England to take the crown into his hand and, after his sudden death, his son Canute reconquered the kingdom to be the king of England in 1018 and king of Norway later in 1028. At the time the Jelling dynasty reigned over three kingdoms which surrounded the North Sea.2 While it is important to reevaluate the rule of the Jelling dynasty from the viewpoint of European political history, we should remember another important activity by the Danes: raising rune stones in memory of the dead. The reader often forgets that he has facts before him, and not the most poetically fanciful or barbarously frightful imaginations of an overwrought brain. Think of the amount of mystery that enters into the life of Mary Queen of Scots; of the death-feuds of the Highland clans; of the wanderings of the Pretender. In Swedish history what can be more romantic than the adventurous youth of Gustavus Vasa, and the imprisonment, madness, and poisoning of King Erik XIV.? Whole periods in the life of Gustavus Adolphus - I here especially allude to his “Brautfahrt” (“search for a bride”) in Germany - are still shrouded in mystery, and now we come to the most romantic King of all, the stubbornly brave, fiery, and thoughtless Charles XII. - not a man who would have been, like Gustavus Adolphus, equally great in the tranquil times of peace, had he ever known them; not a lovable, wise man like Gustavus Vasa, whom the cruel persecutions of his youth did not render bitter and revengeful; but a remarkable man all the same, with something of meteoric rapidity and demoniac splendour in him or rather in his career. For he himself was plain almost to shabbiness, plain in speech, in his food, and in his dress. No strong drink ever passed his lips after the follies of his youth. But his great characteristic was his uncurbed love of war. -

Some Kaylor-Smeltzer Genealogy Two years ago, while attempting once more to extend some of the family King William I (the Conqueror) tree, I found some web-based sources that yielded quite unanticipated break- 1028 – 1087 King Henry I (Henry Beauclerc) throughs. The family involved was Estep – my grandmother Cline’s family. 1068 – 1135 Since they were Mennonites, I had fallaciously assumed that this was a Ger- Empress Matilda (Lady of the English) man family and that they had arrived in Pennsylvania in the 1730-1770 pe- 1102 – 1167 King Henry II (Curtmantle) riod – the first wave of German immigration. I was wrong on three fronts: 1133 – 1189 the family was English, had arrived much earlier, and came to Maryland. As King John (John Lackland) of this moment, I have found quite a few ancestors. But quite unexpectedly, 1166 – 1216 I found very similar results with the Smeltzer family: it had intermarried in King Henry III (Henry of Winchester) 1207 – 1272 Maryland with English and that led to many discoveries. I am still progress- King Edward I (Longshanks) ing on this but I have already entered nearly 22,000 names of our direct 1239 – 1307 ancestors – and maybe a hundred children of these direct ancestors. (Every- King Edward II 1284 – 1327 one discussed in this message is a direct ancestor.) In the process, I found King Edward III Vikings and Visigoths, Popes and peasants, people who were sainted and peo- 1312 – 1401 ple who were skinned alive. Grace Butkowski Victorian Representations of Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I The rivalry of Mary, Queen of Scots and her English cousin Elizabeth I is a storied one that has consumed both popular and historical imaginations since the two queens reigned in the sixteenth century. It is often portrayed as a tale of contrasts: on one end, Gloriana with her fabled red hair and virginity, the bastion of British culture and Protestant values, valiantly defending England against the schemes of the Spanish and their Armada. On the other side is Mary, Queen of Scots, the enchanting and seductive French-raised Catholic, whose series of tragic, murderous marriages gave birth to both the future James I of England and to schemes surrounding the English throne.
