Manuscript Overview This Overview Lists All Manuscripts from The Manuscript overview This overview lists all manuscripts from the Arnamagnæan Collection from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries that are known to have been changed physically according to text boundaries. The overview does not claim to be exhaustive. Instead, it is supposed to be understood as a working tool based on the indications found in the major secondary literature. During the research of the project, I was able to check many manuscripts and update the entries. However, due to the overwhelming number of manuscripts that turned out to be relevant, numerous indications still remain to be verified or need further research. Nevertheless, this overview presents the first systematic register over physically altered paper manuscripts in the Arnamagnæan Collection and will hopefully facilitate future studies. Please note the following principles applied: • Manuscripts are referred to based on their current form and shelfmark. Generally, each manuscript occupies one row in the overview. In some cases, however, parts of the same manuscript are registered on several consecutive lines in order to improve the readability. A note following the shelfmark indicates this fact. • In the first column, shelfmarks are given in their complete form. Where considered relevant for the identification, Roman numerals in accordance to Kålund’s printed catalogue (1889‐1894) are added. In the other columns, shelfmarks are abbreviated as follows: When mentioning parts of a manuscript in the same row, only the codicological unit (CU) and – if different – the Roman numeral are given. When referring to another manuscript, on the other hand, the indicator of the collection is usually omitted for Arnamagnæan manuscripts, i.e. the “AM” in front of the shelfmark. • In the second column, the status of the manuscripts with respect to rearrangement is indicated using the terms dismembered, aggregated and rearranged, the latter meaning that at least one part of a manuscript was both dismembered and re‐aggregated by the same person. Wherever known, the status also indicates if the changes were made under Árni Magnússon (“by AM”) or before him. Later changes are only mentioned where they are known to have resulted in parts being placed with another manuscript number (not counting a separate letter under the same number) or in a different collection. • The third column refers to the shape of manuscripts as indicated in Jón Ólafsson’s catalogue compared to the current contents. For manuscripts that have been studied in detail, this column merely points at the manuscript in question in the section A.4, which contains detailed information. For other manuscripts brief mention is made of the described composition and differences compared to they current state. The note “(as today)” means that the items indicated in the handwritten catalogue agree with the present contents of the manuscript. • The fourth and fifth column indicate the context (if known), in which the manuscript or its parts were found when acquired by Árni Magnússon and prior to that, where relevant. If not stated otherwise, the references in these two columns apply to the “List of former codices (t2‐t3)” (section A.5). • The last column lists the titles of works contained by the manuscripts, in order to facilitate the usage of the overview. Most titles are standardised based on Simek/Hermann Pálsson (2007), but employ modernised spelling. For works not mentioned there, the title used on Handrit.is are followed. However, texts without a proper title are referred to by either quoting the rubric as indicated in the catalogues or giving a brief description (in English). Crossed‐out fragments of texts are not mentioned in the contents‐column, and the contents of different CUs are separated by semi‐colons while the individual texts within a CU are separated by commas. • Information taken from Kålund’s catalogue (1889‐1894) and the works referenced within, the online catalogue Handrit.is and Jón Ólafsson’s handwritten catalogue (mostly AM 456 fol.) is not labelled explicitly. The source of other statements that are not based on my own research is mentioned either directly in the overview or in the relevant section of the “List of former codices”. • A question mark (“?”) indicates suggestions and preliminary assumptions that need further investigation. Truth-claims and defensive narrators in Icelandic romance-sagas RALPH O’CONNOR University of Aberdeen Straining the bounds of credibility was an activity in which many mediaeval Icelandic saga-authors indulged. In §25 of Göngu-Hrólfs saga, the hero Hrólfr Sturlaugsson wakes up from an enchanted sleep in the back of beyond to find both his feet missing. Somehow he manages to scramble up onto his horse and find his way back to civilisation – in fact, to the very castle where his feet have been secretly preserved by his bride-to-be. Also staying in that castle is a dwarf who happens to be the best healer in the North.1 Hann mælti: ‘… skaltu nú leggjast niðr við eldinn ok baka stúfana.’ Hrólfr gerði svâ; smurði hann þá smyrslunum í sárin, ok setti við fætrna, ok batt við spelkur, ok lèt Hrólf svâ liggja þrjár nætr. Leysti þá af umbönd, ok bað Hrólf upp standa ok reyna sik. Hrólfr gerði svâ; voru honum fætrnir þá svâ hægir ok mjúkir, sem hann hefði á þeim aldri sár verit. ‘He said, … “Now you must lie down by the fire and warm the stumps”. ‘Hrólfr did so. Then he [the dwarf] applied the ointment to the wounds, placed the feet against them, bound them with splints and made Hrólfr lie like that for three nights. Then he removed the bandages and told Hrólfr to stand up and test his strength. Hrólfr did so; his feet were then as efficient and nimble as if they had never been damaged.’2 This is rather hard to believe – but our scepticism has been anticipated by the saga-author.

  • On Gender, Status, and Violence in Old Norse Literature
    AÐALHEIÐUR GUÐMUNDSDÓTTIR “How Do You Know if it is Love or Lust?” On Gender, Status, and Violence in Old Norse Literature Abstract This article examines attitudes towards behaviour relating to women within Old Norse literature, focusing both on chivalric romances (translated and original, the riddarasögur) and the legendary sagas (fornaldarsögur), texts that were mostly written in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The written chivalric romances arrived in Iceland from Norway and southern Europe, and thus they often exhib- it different values from those found in thefornaldarsögur , which tend to reflect in- digenous Nordic and heroic storytelling traditions. The article explores differenc- es between the two traditions regarding male emotions and attitudes towards women, with an emphasis on texts in which women are abused. In particular, the article seeks to investigate the relationship between social status and gender roles in these texts, and whether a woman’s rank affects her role and status according to gender. It focuses particularly on romances (especially those featuring courtly love) and fornaldarsögur in which women are either idealised as goddesses, or mistreated and even sexually abused because of their gender. The article con- cludes by asking how far the contrasts within the texts reflect a Norse ‘emotional community,’ as compared with continental European values, and whether these textual differences reflect actual difference in the social expressions of emotion- al behaviour. Ketils saga hængs is an Icelandic legendary saga which is usually dat- ed to the fourteenth century. In one episode the protagonist, Ketill, comes to a farm and asks for hospitality for the night from the mas- ter of the house, Brúni.

Unlike the characters of French romances, who express their feelings in highly expressive monologues, the heroes of Old Norse riddarasögur, are portrayed as seldom showing their emotions and acting only after careful consideration of the implications of their deeds. In riddarasögur, changes in the representation of expressions of feelings remain within the Old Norse tradition of family sagas and kings’ sagas; it can be accounted for by the influence of indigenous models of behaviour and by the desire to satisfy the expectations of a contemporary Scandinavian audience. The subgenre of indigenous riddarasögur, which appear in Iceland, the so-called meykongr sögur (maiden-king sagas), is characterized by an inversion of gender roles, influencing the expression of emotions. Feelings are verbalised by men, whereas the heroines of maiden-king sagas prefer to act, verbally and physically humiliating their suitors (in Nitida saga the representation of emotions is used to distinguish a real maiden-king from a false one). The way the emotions of the heroines are implied by their actions in maiden-king sagas can be traced back to indigenous Scandinavian literary traditions.

Í ritgerðinni er fjallað um samband kyngervis og galdurs í sjö meykónga- sögum, Dínus sögu drambláta, Gibbons sögu, Klári sögu, Nítíða sögu, Sigurðar sögu þögla, Sigurgarðs sögu frækna og Viktors sögu og Blávus, auk þess sem aðrar tengdar sögur eru hafðar til samanburðar. Í fyrsta kafla er farið yfir rannsókna- og útgáfusögu frumsaminna riddarasagna og umsagnir fyrri fræðimanna um þessa lítt sinntu bókmenntagrein og eru rannsóknarspurningar kynntar. Í kafla 2.1 er fjallað um ýmis álitamál í rannsóknum á riddarasögum. Færð eru rök fyrir því að líta mætti á frumsamdar riddarasögur sem ævintýrasögur. Hugtakið ævintýri var notað yfir þessar sögur á miðöldum en sögurnar deila einnig að hluta til sama söguheimi og sagnaminnum. Fjallað er um skilin milli fornaldar- og riddarasagna út frá hugtakanotkun miðaldamanna en einnig er fjallað um skilin milli frumsaminna og þýddra riddarasagna og hugtakið riddarasaga rætt í því samhengi. Í kafla 2.2 er fjallað almennt um meykóngasögur, formgerð þeirra, þróun meykóngaminnisins og tengsl þess við germanska ævintýra- og brúðarleitar- sagnahefð.
