Often these standards are accepted and held to without question for the rest of a person’s life. However, how many of these fashion myths still apply today? Salaam Namaste’s Ali Fazal clues you in on the answer...

In this issue, Salaam Namaste’s Ali Fazal highlights eight fashion mistakes to avoid at all costs.

Socks with Sandals

Who decided this was okay in the first place? Living in the Northwest, I am unfortunately faced with some of the worst offenders of this major fashion don’t. I understand that when it is chilly outside we all dream of the warmth of the summer sun, but wearing socks with sandals doesn’t make the seasons change any faster. If you want to wear sandals this badly, move to a warmer climate.

Novelty Ties, Shirts, Boxer Shorts, Etc.

Just say no (I’m channeling Nancy Reagan). There is nothing lasting about novelty clothing nor does it project a stylish, put together image. Leave the smiley faces, hearts, reindeer, shamrocks, animal and various other prints on the racks of the store where you found them.

Blaring Designer Labels

This is a personal pet peeve of mine. I don’t want to be a walking advertisement and neither should you. It’s not a sophisticated look. Just because you are wearing a designer’s name on your chest, sleeve, or wherever, doesn’t make you stylish. Keep it understated and simple.

Chunky Shoes

These were okay back in the 90s, but the big chunky shoes, especially those with square toes, should be retired at this point. Choose some- thing classic that stands the test of time.

Shiny or Glittery Shirts and Suits

If you are looking for something to go out nightclubbing in, I can think of much better choices than those that are glittery, shiny and ultimately tacky. If you are at a loss, try a form fitting black t-shirt or black dress shirt which can be worn with jeans or trousers and dress shoes or casual shoes.

Clothes That Are Too Loose Fitting

In a word, sloppy. Unless you are a hip hop artist, it’s not the right look. Choose clothes that fit your body. This might take some experimenta- tion by mixing and matching certain cuts and styles until you find the right fit for your body that is flattering.

Backpacks at the Office

I work in a very upscale high rise in Seattle, filled with lawyers and other professional types and it never ceases to surprise how many men wearing nice suits are schlepping backpacks. Unless you are a student or are hiking up a mountain, leave the backpack at home. If you need something for your gym clothes, buy a nice looking gym bag (and there are options that don’t have big logos on them), or if you need something to carry your assorted papers, cell phone, day-planner, etc., get a nice messenger bag.

Ever since won world wide recognition in the form of Golden Globes, Baftas and the Oscars, the stars of the film, including Anil Kapoor and Freida Pinto are both lining up in what may seem as the quickest migration from Bollywood to Hollywood.

The first to be bitten by the H-bug is the sexy Mumbaikar, Freida Pinto. Having won the hearts of many on the red carpets the world over, the sultry actress who is now linked with her Slumdog co-star Dev Patel is on the verge of signing her biggest date with fame. According to our sources from London, the 24 year old actress was first spotted by producers during the casting for Quantum of Solace. Hollywood’s newest and the hottest property has arrived in the form of Pinto.

What’s more, Slumdog director Danny Boyle is now being asked to direct the next Bond film starring Dan- iel Craig. Now if everything falls in place at the right time, Freida’s chances of staring alongside the blonde Bond may just not look like a distant dream. Why? Because it’s Danny on the director’s chair who’ll may recommend Freida. It is possible to save money and have a great wedding at the same time. Salaam Namaste provides these tips for keeping your wedding day focused on celebrating love, not financial ruin.

1. Avoid buying a “wedding” outfit: Check out regular lehngas or salwar kamizes that you might wear for a fancy occasion like Diwali or Eid. Many retailers will market outfits like these as wedding outfits and simply jack up the price..

2. Wear someone else’s gown: Ask your mother, grandmother or other family member if she’ll let you wear her wedding jora. She will be honored that you asked, and you can’t get cheaper than free. Remember, though, that you will probably need to have it altered.

3. Shop sample sales: You can score a designer dress for less if you hit sample sales, especially if you wear a size 8 or something close to it. Sales are usually held during the winter and summer months.

4. Make your own dupatta: Wedding dupattas are usually just made of tulle and a comb or tiara. Don’t pay $30 or more for something you can make on your own for significantly less. Arm yourself with a glue gun, fabric, and a headpiece, then get to work!

5. Do your own hair and makeup: Unless you’re planning on doing something complicated and ornate, you probably don’t need to call in the professionals. Look to wedding magazines for ideas and instructions, then try it out yourself. Remember to practice your style at least once before your wedding day to make sure things will go smoothly.

6. Buy a dress that fits now: Many brides plan on losing weight before they get married and buy a too-small dress for motivation. However, this strategy can set you up for disaster if you don’t make it to your goal weight. Buy a dress that fits now, then have it altered when you lose the weight. It’s always cheaper to take in a dress than to let it out.

7. Wear family jewelry: You don’t need to spend lots of money on wed- ding jewelry. Chances are that someone in your family has something nice for you to wear on your big day. This saves you money and also takes care of finding “something borrowed.”

8. Rent the tux or buy an affordable suit: Chances are your husband-to- be won’t need to wear a tux on a regular basis. Instead of buying one, rent it or just get a nice suit that he’ll be able to wear again.

Visit www.EverestHeights.com | www.snmonthly.com 37 Feature: 100 Ways Invitations You’ve set the date and figured out your guest list; now it’s time to let everyone know. Follow these tips to send out a stylish announcement without spending a fortune.

9. Announce your save-the-date by email or phone call: If you’ve set your date far in advance or on a busy weekend, you may want to send out a save-the-date announcement. Of course, these cards are an added expense. Instead of paying for paper, printing and postage, send your announcement via email or just pick up the phone to let everyone know. 10. Print your own invitations: There are a multitude of programs and paper packages that allow you to create your own invitations. Use one to save money as well as make your invites more personal.

11. Use thermography: If you like the look of engraved invitations, consider using thermography instead. You’ll get a similar effect for less money. 12. Use standard envelopes instead of square: Square envelopes cost more to mail. Even though it’s just a few cents, it can add up when you consider how many invitations you’ll send out. Choose invitations that fit into standard envelopes and you’ll save on postage.

13. Check office supply stores: Wedding boutiques and specialty paper stores tend to charge a premium for invitations. Fortunately, they’re not the only places to go for quality print products. Check out commercial printers like Kinko’s, Office Depot, and Staples to get more for your money. 14. Post card replies: Instead of including a reply card with its own envelope, use a post card. You’ll save money on envelopes, plus postage going both ways.

15. Skip the mailed reply card: Don’t bother including a reply card. Ask for a phone call or email instead. You can even use websites like www.weddingtracker.com for this purpose. If you think those older aunties or other guests may not be able to handle this technology, have your mother or best friend call to confirm their RSVP.

‘Zindagi’ Goes National!!

In today’s day and age, we are so used to mindless entertainment. People simply turn on the radio as a means of distracting themselves from actual thought when getting ready or doing homework. However, since the inception of Radio Salaam Namaste 104.9’s wildly successful program ‘Zindagi’, hosted by the delightfully poignant Dilshad Dilshad Deyani, Dallas residents are throwing the mindless fare out the window in favor of some more thought-provoking programming. I had the opportunity to sit down for an informal Q&A with Ms. Deyani herself, where she revealed the motivations for her unique show, and what keeps Deyani her going every day. Q: Dilshad, If you had to describe your show to someone uninitiated, how would you do it?

A: I think ‘Zindagi’ is all about our lives and its struggles. Any listener will justify this no- tion as it speaks through different voices of all the people regardless of genders. What we feel, think and the challenges we face as immigrants are getting transparent day by day. ‘Zindagi’ at- tempts to bring the best experts and deal with mat- ters that are either rarely discussed or frequently seeking research oriented answers.

Q: What do you think are the biggest issues facing our community right now that your show talks about?

A: ‘Zindagi’(which airs every Friday between 2-3pm on Radio Salaam Na- maste 104.9FM) stands up and says things which are felt by many but voiced by none. When I say things on ‘Zindagi’, women call and thank me for this platform. It’s great to know that my show can be a sort of safe haven to discuss whatever ‘taboo’ issues South Asian individuals feel are important to them. I feel so fortunate to have touched so many people in a profound way. Since last month, the show has been syndicated in over 11 markets nationwide, so I think South Asians all over are finally breaking the shackles of silence that have con- sumed them for so long, and are now ready to tackle the important issues!

Q: It’s so great to see some entertainment in the market that is actually evocative and thought-provoking. Has it always been your mission to provide such entertainment to the South Asian community?

A: My mission has always been to deliver differently from what is already in the market. I don’t like to duplicate and give it my brand name. I think from teaching to engaging in any endeavour I have always thought of being more creative and need-oriented as to what my target audience desires and really is in the look out for.

Dear Didi, I am totally confused. Recently, my ex-boyfriend came to town, and I went to go have lunch with him as platonic friends. I asked my current boyfriend if he was okay with it, and he said yes. But, since then, he has been really distant and snappy with me.. What’s wrong? Signed, Baffled and Bewildered Plano, TX Didi Speaks: Hello!!?! Is anything in there? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Why would he be acting distant and snappy AFTER you went to lunch with your ex? Could it be because he really wasn’t ok with the whole idea? Ding, ding, ding! Everyone in their right mind knows that they shouldn’t go out with their ex, let alone ask their current fling for permission. Since you obviously messed up, make it up to him by cooking him dinner or make it even by letting him go to lunch with his ex. Whatever you do, though, do not spend time with another ex unless you want your current boyfriend to turn into one!

Dear Didi, g e t I recently got into graduate school in New York, and was super excited about it. However, my long-term boyfriend has been trying really hard to convince me to stay. He even gave me an ultimatum, saying he ‘wasn’t willing to do long distance’. I “ p a c k i n g have some pretty good jobs lined up locally, so I’m confused as to whether I should stay or not... Sure, New York is way better for my career, but what about my boyfriend? Help!! Signed, and Confused and Concerned Forth Worth, TX “ Didi Speaks: Dump him quicker than last week’s GLAD bag, don’t girl! He’s obviously too insecure to let you move to another city, but that’s his problem, not yours. My advice would be to get to packing and dont look back. We dont live in the 1950’s anymore look where a woman has to heed to a man’s every wish. In the words of Russell Simmons, do you! back!! Dear Didi, I’m a college student and I just split with my girlfriend of 2 years. It was a pretty friendly split, and we

still hang out with common friends together. The problem is: I am starting tofall for her best friend, who I’ve also known for two years. Do you think its weird for me to ask her friend out so soon after the breakup? How long should I wait? Signed, Anxious and Amorous Denton, TX

Didi Speaks: Shouldn’t this one be part of the guys code of conduct? What are you trying to do here? Ruin a lifelong friendship for your month of plea- sure? I don’t think its weird for you to ask your ex’s friend out, but I do think that you are pretty dumb for even thinking about doing so. That’s like your ex hooking up with your best friend. Not too hot if you think about it, huh? As for knowing how long to wait before asking the friend out, dont hold your breath on this one, pal.
