Watch for them and have your QR Code reader handy! Once you have a QR Code reader installed on your smartphone, you're ready to scan the QR Code. Doing so is very easy. Just follow these simple steps. (1) Open the QR Code reader on your phone. (2) Hold your device over a QR Code so that it is clearly visible within your smartphone's screen. (3) Two things can happen when you correctly hold your smartphone over a QR Code. a) The phone automatically scans the code. b) On some readers, you have to press a button to snap a picture, like the button on your smartphone camera. (4) Presto! Your smartphone reads the code and navigates to the intended destination, which does not happen instantly. It may take a few seconds on some devices. Message Pinarayi Vijayan Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala, Chief Patron, IFFK I am happy to learn that the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy is organising the 25th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) from 10th February to 5th March 2021. Over the years, IFFK has been serving as a secular platform for ideas and people around the world. This edition is a milestone in the history of the IFFK as it is completing quarter of a century of its existence. Across the globe, the year 2020 has been difficult as the world was hit hard by the pandemic. It has left people devastated and scarred. I wish this festival would be a contributing step in healing and reconnecting with the world around us. The decision to conduct the Festival in three additional venues this year reflects the sense of inclusivity and concerns during the pandemic. By adapting a synthesis of physical film screening and digital festival experiences, the Academy is attempting to ensure that the delegates do not miss any of the exciting interactions which are part of the Festival experience. Film as an art ignites the minds of people and goes beyond the process of mere entertainment. This year, by creating a safe environment of viewership, we are setting an example to the whole world. I wish all the delegates a safe and thought provoking festival experience. Message A K Balan Hon’ble Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes, Law, Culture and Parliamentary Affairs Festival President, IFFK The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) has a qualitative influence on the film viewers and the cultural dynamics of Kerala. The festival has contributed significantly to the Malayalam film industry both thematically and technically. IFFK has a remarkable place in the cultural history of Kerala. It brings together around 13,000 people from across the country. IFFK has become one of the best festivals in the world on account of its participation and the quality of films screened. Many concerns were raised about organizing the festival this year due to the Covid- 19 crisis. But, the Government of Kerala decided to go ahead with the festival by adhering to the safety protocols. The Government was driven by two thoughts. The first is our attitude towards the film fraternity. The second is the soothing effect films have on human beings. In 2018, we have seen how the festival rejuvenated the flood-stricken society of Kerala. This year the festival proposed to be held in four cities to restrict the gathering at the permanent venue against the backdrop of the Covid- 19. This is aimed at ensuring safety and convenience of the delegates. I wish all the participants of the 25th IFFK an amazing magical experience. Welcome Note Kamal Chairman, Kerala State Chalachitra Academy Festival Director, IFFK We, at the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy are cautiously excited of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) turning 25 with this edition. Current pandemic environment has forced the Academy resort to the extraordinary step of cancelling the festival on the normal dates in December 2020. The decision to hold the Festival in four cities has been taken after lots of consultation on how to address the pandemic which is yet to show signs of recession in Kerala. I hope that the conduct of IFFK from 10 Feb to 5 March in four cities will be a right step in the direction of healing the pandemic scars and reigniting hopes of human experience of diverse cultural space. At the same time we have formulated a detailed Covid Protocol for IFFK illustrating that the prime concern of the Festival will be the safety of its delegates. The Academy in collaboration with the Department of Health has made arrangements for antigen tests for the delegates onsite. Needless to say, only those who tested negative will be issued delegate kits. The Festival which has been entwined with the cultural moorings of the Kerala society is completing 25 editions. The festival has been an unofficial Film School for many aspiring filmmakers. It quietly made brave strides in re-examining our convictions. It ensured a platform for filmmakers who did not want to compromise the courage to make films of their choice. This is also an occasion for us at the Academy to critically analyse the course of the Festival and the road ahead. I would like to reassure you that the delegates will remain at the heart of any direction of travel we take into the future. Wishing you all a landmark IFFK in a safe environment. Chief Editor's Note C Ajoy Secretary, Kerala State Chalachitra Academy Executive Director, IFFK The International Film Festival of Kerala has crossed yet another landmark as we are set to ring up the curtain on its 25th edition. Celebrated as the one and only people-centric film festival in the world, IFFK has served as a platform for cross cultural synthesis and assimilation of divergent thoughts.

These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. Spectacle spaces: Production of caste in recent Tamil films To foreground the study of caste in Tamil films and to link it with the rise of ‘caste- gestapo’ networks that execute honour killings and murders as a reaction to ‘inter-caste love dramas’ in Tamil Nadu,1 let me narrate a political incident that occurred in Tamil Nadu – that of the formation of a socio-political movement against Dalit assertion in December 2012.

Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

  • Intellectuals and the Maoists
Intellectuals and the Maoists Uddipan Mukherjee∗ A revolution, insurgency or for that matter, even a rebellion rests on a pedestal of ideology. The ‘ideology’ could be a contested one – either from the so-called leftist or the rightist perspective. As ideology is of paramount importance, so are ‘intellectuals’. This paper delves into the concept of ‘intellectuals’. Thereafter, the role of the intellectuals in India’s Maoist insurgency is brought out. The issue turns out to be extremely topical considering the current discourse of ‘urban Naxals/ Maoists’. A few questions that need to be addressed in the discourse on who the Maoist intellectuals are: * Dr. Uddipan Mukherjee is a Civil Service officer and presently Joint Director at Ordnance Factory Board, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. He earned his PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Department of Atomic Energy. He was part of a national Task Force on Left Wing Extremism set up by the think tank VIF. A television commentator on Maoist insurgency, he has published widely in national and international journals/think-tanks/books on counterinsurgency, physics, history and foreign policy. He is the author of the book ‘Modern World History' for Civil Services. Views expressed in this paper are his own. Uddipan Mukherjee Are the intellectuals always anti-state? Can they bring about a revolution or social change? What did Gramsci, Lenin or Mao opine about intellectuals? Is the ongoing Left- wing Extremism aka Maoist insurgency in India guided by intellectuals? Do academics,
