Historical Note
The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, Amtrak, is a passenger rail service in the United States. With the passing of the Rail Passenger Service Act in 1970 to help the declining passenger train industry, Amtrak was able to begin service on May 1, 1971. Amtrak commenced with 326 locomotives and 1,275 passenger cars. Today Amtrak operates more than 300 trains a day and transports roughly 20 to 30 million passengers a year.

Scope and Content
