Received: 25 March 2010; in revised form: 14 April 2010 / Accepted: 11 May 2010 / Published: 12 May 2010 Abstract: The mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OTA) has toxic effects in animals; the most relevant of them is nephrotoxicity. OTA has also been classified as a possible carcinogen for humans (group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Therefore, exposure to OTA through contaminated food can represent health impairment to humans. The maximum permitted level for this mycotoxin in wine is 2.0 g/L. The presence of OTA in Spanish wines produced using the traditional methods under the Denomination of Origin “Jerez-Xérès-Sherry and manzanilla Sanlúcar de Barrameda” was evaluated by a High performance Liquid Chromatography method with fluorescence detection and immunoaffinity column purification. A recovery of 95.4% and a limit of detection and quantification of 0.009 g/L and 0.02 g/L respectively, were achieved.

9/9/2014 Priorat pioneers celebrate 25 years | Articles | JancisRobinson.com FC Back to all articles Written by Ferran Centelles 9 Sep 2014 Priorat pioneers celebrate 25 years TASTING ARTICLES PRIORAT Those most closely involved in the extraordinary story of the revival of Priorat met in Barcelona last week to celebrate their 25th anniversary. (You can catch up with the story of how Priorat began to change from an almost abandoned corner of Catalunya to a prosperous and well-regarded wine region in Priorat - worth the money and in the Priorat entry in your online Oxford Companion). Five visionaries led by René Barbier (Clos Mogador) started almost from zero, sharing the same facility to produce what can be regarded as the first great contemporary Priorat wine in 1989. They were José Luis Perez (Clos Martinet), Daphne Glorian (Clos Erasmus), Álvaro Palacios (Finca Dofí, L’Ermita) and Carles Pastrana (Clos de l’Obac). Today they are all considered stellar producers worldwide. A commemorative lunch was organised at the outstanding Caelis restaurant in Barcelona. Sadly, just four of the five were present as Carles Pastrana declined to join the festivities. But the four remaining pioneers showed a fascinating miscellaneous tasting of their wines from different vintages and explained the evolution of their wines and the region. • Godello 2017
GODELLO 2017 THE COLLECTION OF SPANISH GRAPE VARIETIES A white grape variety native to the north-eastern region of Spain, probably originating from the slopes of the Sil River in the D.O. Valdeoras... It can be found throughout Galicia, northern Portugal and the D.O. Bierzo. Traces of its production have been found dating back to the 12th century in the areas of Castile-Leon and Bierzo. Outside of these regions, it is grown in the D.O. Abona, El Hierro, La Palma, Ribeira Sacra, Ribeiro, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de Güimar, Valle de la Orot- rava and Icoden-Daute- Isora (Tenerife). Sometimes there is confusion with Verdejo if you don’t see its leaves. Respected for its well develo- ped qualities, Godello shows a complex aromatic profile. It prefers dry climates and low humidity soils. Ages well in barrels. 1.200 Ha planted in Spain TECHNICAL INFORMATION Harvest time: End of September Classification: Bierzo DO Origin of the grapes: Bierzo Grape Variety: Godello Vinification: Fermentation at 12ºC for 15 days and completion of the fermentation at 16ºC. Aging on lees 60 days with daily batonages of 5 minutes Barrel ageing: No Winemaker: Ruben Magallanes TASTING NOTES Superb golden colour, delicate and radiant. Fresh and expressive nose, with a seductive note of lemons, white fruit (golden apple) and early spring flowers and a hint of yeast from the lees. The supple and full bodied mouthfeel is complemented by exquisite acidity. The mid-palate is ample and the lingering finish reveals citrus notes, cut grass and spices. PAIRING Ribs, roasts and cutlets, as well as curried poultry, pasta with shellfish and seafood will all go perfectly with this wine for dinner with friends.

MONTSANT INFORMATION DOSSIER INTRODUCTION The D.O. Montsant (Designation of Origin or wine appellation), despite being a recently created wine appellation, has years of wine-making history to its name. Wine experts and press consider it to be an up and coming region and prestigious magazines such as “The Wine Spectator” have declared it to be “a great discovery”. The quality of Montsant wines is key to their success, as too is their great value for money. The prestigious Spanish wine guide, “Guia Peñin” agrees that “the quality of Montsant wines and their great prices make this region an excellent alternative.” In the United States, “Wine & Spirits” magazine have stated that “Montsant should be watched with interest”. Montsant wines appear in some of the most prestigious wine rankings in the World and they always tend to be the best priced amongst their rivals at the top of the list. The professionals and wineries behind the DO Montsant label are very enthusiastic. Many wineries are co-operatives with important social bases and the winemakers who make Montsant wines are often under 40 years old. We at the DO Montsant believe that youth, coupled with a solid wine-making tradition is synonymous of future, new ideas and risk-taking. To conclude, this is the DO Montsant today: a young wine appellation with a promising future ahead of it. 1 THE REGULATORY COUNCIL The wines of the DO Montsant are governed by the Regulatory council or body.

Volcanic activity has taken place exclusively at the southern part of the island, where Cumbre Vieja volcano, the most active basaltic volcano in the Canaries, has been constructed in the last 123 ky. Cumbre Vieja has suffered seven eruptions in the last 500 years, being the last in 1971 (Teneguía volcano). Since the last eruptive episode, Cumbre Vieja volcano has remained in a relative seismic calm that was interrupted on October 7th and 13rd, 2017, by two remarkable seismic swarms with earthquakes located beneath Cumbre Vieja volcano at depths ranging between 14 and 28 km with a maximum magnitude of 2.7. The frequency of these seismic episodes increased in 2020 with the occurrence of five more seismic swarms As part of the volcano monitoring program of Cumbre Vieja, diffuse degassing of CO2 has been continuously monitored since 2005 at the southernmost part of Cumbre Vieja according to the accumulation chamber method.

  • Conversations with Winemakers in Spain's Penedès Region1
Conversations with Winemakers in Spain’s Penedès Region1 Prepared by Lucia and John Gilbert, June 2015 We have been studying the career paths of U.S. winemakers who are women, mostly in California, for the past three years (www.womenwinemakers.com), and are extending this research to winemakers in Spain. Our first trip, in July 2014, was to the Rioja wine region where we had conversations with several of its women winemakers.2 Our more recent trip, in April 2015, was to the Penedès, a wine region located in the autonomous community of Catalonia and a short drive west of Barcelona. A Parés Baltà Vineyard high above Sant Marti Sarroca We stayed at a small hotel in the town of Vilafranca del Penedès. This location was selected because it was an easy drive from the hotel to the wineries that we had arranged to visit well in advance. Appointments are required. Arranging the Visits and Conversations We were fortunate to be able to schedule winery visits and conversations with five highly impressive women we identified through our research. These five women craft their wines at bodegas having varying levels of production and are involved in producing Cava, still wines, or both. Laura Tragant at Codorníu, Eva Plazas Torné at Vilarnau, Maria Elena Jiménez and Marta Casas at Parés Baltà, and Mireia Torres Maczassek at Jean Leon Winery (and Torres Priorat) are the winemakers with whom we arranged visits and had our conversations. Each and every visit and conversation was truly memorable. The hospitality was exceptional and the conversations thoughtful and informative.
