WARBSTOW PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATOR

After nearly three years I am pleased to say that the PAD, located on the front of the Community Centre, is now FULLY OPERATIONAL. Currently it is set up with adult pads which can accommodate anyone on or over the age of 8. At the time of writing the school are investigating the purchase of some children’s pads. The defibrillator will be available to anyone whom the ambulance service thinks may need to use it.

SO HOW IS IT USED?

1. In the event of an emergency dial 999. If the ambulance service feel that the use of the defibrillator is warranted they

will open the cabinet for you or your agent to go and collect.

2. At the same time a SMS message will be sent out to the local team who have been trained in CPR. They will be advised that the cabinet has been opened. One or more of them will meet whoever is sent to collect the defib and offer their services as someone

trained in CPR.

3. In the event of an emergency during school time, one of the trained school staff will hand over the defib to who ever goes to

collect it at the Community Centre gate.

4. After dialling 999 and sending someone for the defib if you are with a collapsed person stay on the line whilst the ambulance service operator will talk you through CPR. Do not delay CPR whilst waiting for the defib. 5. As soon as the defib is with the patient apply the pads and follow the spoken instructions.

Page 12 Cut here & keep Cut here

GGLENTONLENTON BBROWNROWN This really is my last article for your Warbstow and District News and I have little to report, as County Hall activities for us have dropped to a minimum at present due to the Election Campaign. At the time of writing this article I am down to my last two meetings with the East Cornwall Planning and Strategic Planning Committees and then I have completed my work for

Cornwall Council after a 20 year run.

Moving on from the Cornwall Council Elections on May 4th, we are now into a General Election Campaign for early June, and despite all the Brexit emphasis I really think the Prime Minister’s actions are the results of good opinion polls for her, showing Labour at a very low level and the Lib Dems just beginning to rise again, this is the time to boost her vertical strength. However, I am concerned that “Election Fever” will take the spotlight off Health and Social

Care because this presently is a critical issue.

I do hope that Councillor Rob Rotchell is re-elected to the Council as he has a vast experience on health issues having worked for the NHS, and now chairs a committee at County Hall which has to pass on their findings to a special committee made up of Council and hospital authorities. Their findings and recommendations will present a case to Government which I hope will bring positive and lasting results.

Again, I would like to thank everyone for their support to me whilst I have been their local County Council member, and when you know who your new Council member is I extend my best wishes for their success in the future. Also my thanks to Gerry Brown and the Warbstow & District News which, to my mind, is doing an extremely good job in informing the area of all that is happening.

Warmest greetings Glenton

(I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Glenton a happy & healthy, well deserved retirement) Ed.

LLOCALOCAL CCOUNTRYOUNTRY WWALKSALKS

According to the National Trust this walk is the Crackington Cracker. To my mind it’s more exercising than that!! It’s 3 miles distance and 1 mile up and down. It’s worth it though for the spectacular views alone. Walk 3 Crackington, Cambeak headland & the Ludon Valley. Difficulty: Moderate gradients. Steep steps, stick recommended (No hand rails) Distance: 3.25 Miles Time: 3½ hours Footwear: Stout Boots if wet. Can be muddy after rain.

Page 16

2 Look out for the bridges crossing the streams and the steep steps. Some are badly worn leaving them slight trip hazards. Continue along the SWCP and enjoy the glimpses of and Lundy Island on a clear day. As you trek along the path there are several gates with views to Cambeak Headland.

3 At the base of the headland look back across Tremoutha, below, to see why Crackington is called Haven.

A trek up to the headland will afford magnificent views across to the coast and further along towards The Strangles beach. Whilst your getting your breath back at the headland take time to also lookout for the Soay sheep that have made the headland home. The Strangles Beach, popular in the summer has a rocky path down but do check the tides. At the top of cliffs 4 above the beach turn left at the sign post towards the car park approx 200metres. At the lane turn left towards Trevigue Farm. As you pass the farm take the gravel lane down the left side of the farm house and down the steep path to the valley bottom.

5 The Ludon Valley is a broadleaved woodland. Sheltered from the coastal winds it is also a haven of a different sort. Wild flowers in abundance. Follow the valley down to the bridges over the streams and return to Crackington Haven for a well earned Pasty & Chips.

EEDENDEN CCHAPELHAPEL

THE LIONION, THE WITCHITCH AND THE WARDROBE EDEN CHAPEL 6TH APRIL 2017

Young Mathew Parsons, aged 7 yrs old, summed up his visit through the wardrobe to Eden Chapel’s display as awesome.

What better review do we need! A project that started when a wardrobe, used for storage, was being moved through a doorway has developed over the last 18 months. Eden Chapel turning into the enchanted world that

Mathew and others visited.

Working with a ‘Zero’ budget and the goodwill of Team Eden plus friends, donations and loans of props from local businesses and Otterham CP school has helped us raise £145.00 for our chosen appeals. Our own Young at Heart club helped in the purchasing of some essential items for the children and families displaced in Syria.

We are truly grateful for everyone’s support.

Thank you! Alison Hoather

Forty: The age which we all dread reaching and then absolutely hate leaving behind.

Forty: The number of people that found the two and a bit pages of my last article just too long.

Forty: the number of times today that I have asked my darling wife 'Have you seen my reading glasses?'

Forty: The speed at which 'olds' drive. Forty in a '30' which can be truly scary, followed by '40' in a de-restricted zone which is truly frustrating and causes dodgy overtaking manoeuvres. Nb: To 'The Warbstow speed trappers', don't say I didn't warn you about the contents of your net (you'll be Billy No'mates)!!

Forty: The minimum tea consumption (in pints) necessary for this builder in a normal working week.

Forty: The maximum number of pints of beer that an old fellow can drink per year without risk of hospitalization.

Forty: The number of times you have to call BT before getting a fault sorted.

Forty: 'The top forty'. A ranking system for the forty worst tunes of the week; apart from the late 70's and 80's where it was obviously a measure of the best tunes of the week.

Forty: The number of hours worked per week when it's not b****y raining.

Forty: The number of lines in this article. I know I don't generally take much notice of comments (especially from Roger Page) but just this once, concisitude has a place. God knows how books caught on if you lot can't manage 2 and a bit pages!

Forty: The number of times I have misused apostrophes in Warbler articles...... apparently! (Sorry Ed.)

Forty: The number of times a day that I feel grateful for living in Cornwall. (Hear hear Ed.)

Nine years ago Doug arranged with Lifeboat to take his brother Gordon's (late of Knapinlake) ashes out to sea for scaering. The six closest family members went on the boat whilst the rest of us stood on the cliff and saw nothing ‐ due to thick sea fog.

In recent years Doug had spoken of his wishes to have a sim‐ ilar send off so on the 19th of April six close members of the family took his ashes on the lifeboat and once again a ile ceremony was held at Gulland Rock. They had been made most welcome by the crew and thanked them for their care and consideraon.

Preferring not to go on the boat my eldest daughter and I with six of my grandchildren and one family dog watched the acvity from .

The calm sea and beauful weather made it the perfect evening and one which we shall never forget.

London Experience. 4th Feb. Left Warbstow at 7am. Weather conditions good for travelling. 8am. A30 between Launceston and Okehampton, stop in layby. Flashing warning lights on dash. What's going on! Train departs Exeter 8.47am. Called recovery services. Explained we were on A30 having tickets, for train and theatre. Were told someone should be with you in 40minutes. So, obviously we are not going to be at the station in time, and hoping booking form would be valid for later departure. 8.40ish, rang breakdown person again. Someone should be with you in ten minutes. 9.10am Call from driver of recovery vehicle, asking if we had moved, as he could not find us and enquiring if we had moved, as he was almost at Launceston. "WHY"? His instructions were that we were west bound on A30. Wrong way! Another thirtyish cold minutes, recovery vehicle arrives. Obviously not his fault. 20 minutes to load car, and then 5 miles along narrow roads to a garage. Saw parts of west I didn't know existed. Arrived at garage. No car available to continue journey, as only roadside assistance on policy. So, there we were, wondering what to do. Then a bit of luck, as the garage had a call out to a breakdown in Exeter, and a lift in another break down vehicle, a white one this time. We asked the driver if it was likely we would get the 11.20am train. "Depends on the traffic" was the answer. "Can you drive any faster?" "Oh no, this vehicle is restricted to 56mph, and I'm doing that now." was the reply. Arrived at station. Experienced that heart stopping experience, when you see the train on the platform, and you are on the wrong side of the barrier! Asked if we could go through, and sort out tickets on train, just as the whistle went. most helpful, and tickets sorted for 1.10pm. Mean while, Claire has been waiting to join us at Tiverton station since 8.30am. Phoned to say we were finally on route. There is not a lot to do at Tiverton station, except drink coffee and eat snacks! After arriving in London had a great time taking in the sights, and visiting the out of our pockets stores. The show, The Jersey Boys, fantastic! Cont….. Page 23
