Saint-Petersburg was founded in 1703 by ; the city was the capital of Russia from 1712 to 1918. The XVIII and XIX centuries are time of brilliant development for St. Petersburg, as well as for the whole Russia. For Russian art this period is called "golden century." During this time were built many remarkable architectural sightseeings: Square, Kamenoostrovskiy and Elagin , the Alexander Nevski Monastery, to Peter the Great - The , St. Isaac's and the Cathedral, the , Mikhaylovskiy Palace, church of the Savior on Blood. In the "Encyclopaedia Britannica" Saint-Petersburg is called "one of the most harmonious and majestic cities of ". From the first decades of its existence, Saint-Petersburg became the center of science and education. The first city professional school – School of Engineering appeared in 1719, and the first secular institution – Academic University – in 1724. The Academy of Sciences was opened in 1725. In the XIX century were built Institute, Saint-Petersburg University, the Mining Academy, Pedagogic Institute, Clinical Institute of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna and others. It should be noted that the Clinical Institute of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, founded in 1885 with the purpose of physicians development based on the latest achievements of medical science, later was reformed into the medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies, and in the form of merger with the medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov was reorganized in North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov in 2011.

During the Second World (1941-1945) Saint-Petersburg was under the blockade for about 900 days. Despite the war, the city was an active work on development and invention of new armaments, improve the industry, researches, experiments and scientific discoveries were carried out. From on the territory of NWSMU named after I.I. Mechnikov (former Leningrad Medical Institute) the evacuation hospital functioned, as well it was continued the training of doctors for the army.

North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov was founded on October 12, 2011 in the form of merger of two the oldest educational institutions of Russia – Saint-Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies and Saint-Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov. Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov (1845-1916) – Russian and French biologist (zoologist, embryologist, immunologist, physiologist and pathologist); one of the founders of evolutionary embryology, the discoverer of phagocytosis and intracellular digestion, the founder of comparative pathology of inflammation, phagocytic theory of immunity, the founder of scientific gerontology. The Nobel Prize Winner in Physiology and Medicine (1908).

Respect towards the historical and cultural traditions is one of the fundamental elements of the University activity: the continued development of scientific schools of such globally renowned professors as V.M. Bekhterev, E.E. Eichwald, N.V. Sklifosofskiy, D.O. Ott and other prominent Russian scientists. A number of departments are named after its founders; memorial plaques on the University buildings commemorate the outstanding scientists who worked there. The following museums are founded in the University: Museum of the History of NWSMU named after I.I. Mechnikov, Museum of Forensic Medicine with the center of thanatology, Museum of Anatomy, Museum of Dentistry. "White Nights" is the period from June to early July, when the sun sets down for no more than 9 °, and evening practically coincide with the morning one. White Nights are a peculiar of symbol of Saint-Petersburg: during this time the city hosts a variety of fests, concerts and folk festivals. In the last week of June is a holiday of school graduates "Scarlet Sails", and Festival of Arts "Stars of the White Nights".

There is also a system of commercial buses, which are distinguished by letters “K” and “T”, and “”- privately owned minivans or small buses, which follow fixed routes, collecting and depositing passengers anywhere along the way. Metro is a very reliable and cost-effective way of transportation. The metro is open from 05.45 to 01.00 (exact information www.metro.spb.ru/en). Work of metro during the holidays can be extended. You can use the PayPass technology to pay for your trip. PayPass readers can be found in all the stations, most commonly next to the operator’s booth. If you have a smartphone with NFC, you can also download the “wallet” app and use it to pay. o Taxi

Most people use mobile apps with their favorite taxi services. You can choose from Uber, Gett, or Yandex.Taxi, which work in all the bigger Russian cities (also available in English), and Taxovichkof, which only works in St. Petersburg (also available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Chinese). It doesn’t hurt to download all of them and choose a service depending on which one is cheaper at the time you want to use it. Price often depends on availability of cars and demand at the time.

ACCOMODATION Foreign students, invited to the University for an internship/traineeship, can be located in the Student Campus "Severnaya" (Prosveshcheniya pr., 45) in a two- or three-bed room. Of course we hope that your stay in St. Petersburg will be without any problems regarding your health or safety. And most likely this will be the case. However, should you need any medical assistance or emergency services (ambulance, police or fire brigade), here is some useful information.

FIRE Please acquaint yourself with the fire instructions displayed in each of the buildings, and locate your nearest fire extinguisher and fire exit. Please evacuate the building immediately upon hearing the alarm. If this happens during the night, one person in each building or on each floor will be responsible for checking that everyone has left the building safely.

SMOKING Your attention is drawn to the fact that smoking is not allowed inside any of the buildings (and that includes all the bedrooms).

ALCOHOL NB! According to the article 20.20 of the Offences Code of Russia, drinking in a place where it is forbidden by the federal law is punishable with a fine of 500 to 1500 . The article 16 of the Federal Law #171-FZ "About the State Regulation of Production and of Ethanol, Alcoholic and Ethanol-containing Products and about Restriction of Alcoholic Products Consumption (Drinking)" forbids drinking in almost all public places (including entrance halls, staircases and elevators of living buildings) except bars, restaurants or other similar establishments where it is permitted to sell alcoholic products for immediate consumption.

PROBLEMS Should you experience a problem of some sort during your exchange at UMTE, please let one of the international coordinator members know as soon as possible. It might be a practical, organizational or domestic matter, and in all probability it can be sorted out without too much difficulty.

COMPLAINTS If, for some reason, you feel dissatisfied with some aspect of your weeks at UMTE and wish to make a complaint, please let the International Office know immediately. If all attempts to resolve the complaint amicably with the party concerned prove unsuccessful, the International Office will undertake preparatory consultations with you and the other party in order to resolve the issue. The matter will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. In the first instance every effort will be taken to resolve the issue informally and verbally. Should this not be possible, steps will be taken to ensure that the complainant and defendant have a full and fair opportunity to present their cases with supporting evidence and more formally in writing, if desired.

In order to avoid a critical situation you need to: o Take into account the peculiarities of your health and other personal circumstances when making the solution to come to Saint-Petersburg. o Acquaint in advance with the conditions and traditions of the host country. NWSMU CANTEEN NWSMU offers a canteen to the staff and students. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared exclusively from fresh, high-quality products. The menu is very diverse, with at least five kinds of salad, hot and cold appetizers, and soups. Hot meals always include a choice of meat, poultry, and fish, vegetables, and side dishes, including a choice of rice, buckwheat, or potatoes. A special healthy choice menu is also offered.

Prices are designed for a student budget: the average cost of a full meal does not usually exceed 200 roubles. The dining room usually has plenty of space, and is a great place to enjoy a cup of tea, prepare for class or simply relax.

The price of the sim card is around 200 rubles, which according to the course is around 3 euro, normally for this sum it is included sms and calls and internet.

ISIC CARD The international ISIC card is more suitable for those who plan frequent travel abroad during their studies in Russia. The card offers discounts in more than 130 countries worldwide, for which Russian university ID cards are not valid. The ISIC card gives you free access to museums, theatres and cultural centres in participating countries, as well as discounts on holidays and air travel, hotel and hostel accommodation, training courses and educational programmes, and shopping offline and online.

In Russia, ISIC card holders are eligible for more than 3,000 discounts, some of which are also granted upon presentation of a regular Russian student ID card. Before purchasing the ISIC card, make sure you read through the available offers on the Russian version of the ISIC website – it’s possible that a Russian student ID card may sufficient.

A FEW GENERAL TIPS

• Bring enough cash for the first few days. Not all taxis take credit cards; card readers and ATMs may not always work when you need them etc. • Before the flight, charge your mobile devices and refill your mobile and Internet accounts in case urgent communication will be needed. • Bring an adapter if needed: Russian electric outlets take round 2-pin Euro plugs with 220V current. • If you take any prescription medication, be sure to bring enough of it for the entire duration of your trip, as some medications may be unavailable in Russia, as such or without a local doctor’s prescription. • Warm clothes and boots, gloves and scarves are always a must.
