Unhealthy diets exact a high health cost, cause environmental destruction, increase the risk of pandemic outbreaks and lead to massive greenhouse gas emissions and global food insecurity. That is why a shift towards more resilient, healthy and climate-friendly food-systems is urgently needed. This is especially true for countries in the Global North,2 where diets rely excessively on animal-based proteins. Unfortunately, healthy diets are neither accessible nor affordable for more than half of the world population. Governments, the private sector, farmers and consumers must all take action in order to implement transformative and ambitious changes in the food system. One troubling development associated with this is the attempt to delineate in universal terms what constitutes a sustainable and healthy diet. In this article, I problematize an increasingly popular dietary narrative—one which calls for people to avoid red meat and dairy, and which portrays the local food movement as a romantic distraction. In contrast, I provide evidence for a range of sustainability and health benefits associated with localism and the inclusion of ruminants—the suborder of mammals from which humans derive most of their red meat and dairy—in the food system. Finally, using the neo-colonial subjugation of Indigenous food cultures as an example, I show how universal dietary advice can result in the promotion of culturally-inappropriate foods to the detriment of community health and sustainability. I conclude with a call for a more pluralist and multi-scalar approach to the multifaceted challenges associated with food production and consumption.     The Journal of Nutrition Issues and Opinions The EAT-Lancet Commission’s Dietary Composition May Not Prevent Noncommunicable Disease Mortality Francisco J Zagmutt, Jane G Pouzou, and Solenne Costard EpiX Analytics, Fort Collins, USA ABSTRACT The recently published EAT-Lancet Commission report on dietary impacts on the environment suggested that their proposed diet could prevent more than 10 million annual premature mortalities from noncommunicable diseases globally. The report did not meet standards for transparency and replicability, nor did it fully account for statistical uncertainty. Our attempt to replicate the mortality calculations for the United States revealed flaws in the assumptions and methods used to estimate the avoided mortalities. After correcting some calculation errors and fully accounting for uncertainty in the avoided mortalities, the mortality reduction effect of the EAT-Lancet proposed diet in the USA is no greater than the impact of energy consumption changes that would prevent under-weight, over-weight, and obesity alone. As our findings call into question the global conclusions of the EAT-Lancet report, futher independent validation is needed before it can be used to inform dietary guidelines. Animal source foods, on the other hand, are regularly stigmatized for their alleged link with disease, environmental deterioration, and animal abuse. Although there is a reasonable case for the improvement of animal agriculture, this discourse leads to a binary and counterproductive view of food systems: plants are largely seen as beneficial and animal source foods as intrinsically harmful. We argue that this animal/plant binary and the promotion of civic responsibility to accept it as such are cultural constructs that emerged in the Anglosphere during the 19th century. The divide has been continuously evolving since and is currently deepening due to a global sense of urgency, under- pinned by various societal anxieties and normative responses. A symptomatic example is provided by the recent call for a Planetary Health Diet and a Great Food Transformation by the EAT-Lancet Commission and its wider network.     PLANT-FORWARD BY THE NUMBERS A Pre-COVID-19 Pandemic Look at a Consumer Juggernaut Metrics and Insights on Consumer Trends, Business Opportunities, and the Evidence-based Imperatives Reshaping our Food Choices Numbers about what to eat and why, and who’s eating what—numbers that frame challenges from environmental sustainability to the obesity crisis, track the state of consumer preferences, and suggest future business opportunities—fly by us all the time. We’ve rounded up some of the recent data points reported by media and other organizations through mid-winter 2020 that we think are especially worth noting and present them here to help us map the accelerating impact of “plant-forward,” past and future. This is a data capture that immediately precedes the COVID-19 pandemic. How people will think and act around these issues and trends once we have a vaccine and can put this tragic and deeply unsettling crisis behind us is uncertain. For now and for many, just putting food on the table—and trying to address our anxieties about the virus, the health and safety of our families, and the economic wreckage this public health emergency has caused— vastly outweighs most other concerns.
