Firstly six different word-formation processes, including blending, was described. Those were compounding, clipping, backformation, acronyming, derivation and blending. The investigation was done by using a list of blends from Wikipedia. The words were looked up in the Longman dictionary of 2005 and in a dictionary online. A google search and a corpus investigation were also conducted. The investigation suggested that most of the blends were made by clipping and the second most common form was clipping and overlapping. Blends with only overlapping was unusual and accounted for only three percent. The investigation also suggested that the most common way to create blends by clipping was to use the first part of the first word and the last part of the second word. The blends were not only investigated according to their structure but also according to the domains they occur in. This part of the investigation suggested that the blends were most frequent in the technical domain, but also in the domain of society. Table of contents 1. It has been claimed that English words based on Thai are very few because of a lack of Thai-English linguistic and cultural contact in the British/American colonial history. Nevertheless, the power of English in modern Thai media and tourism clearly appears in Thai words borrowed by Thai and foreign writers of tourism magazines because of particular sociolinguistic needs. This study thus aims to analyze and describe the linguistic features of lexical borrowing from Thai in three renowned English language tourism magazines in Phuket and Krabi provinces and Koh Samui district, Surat Thani province, a tourism hub of southern Thailand, to present the magazine editors and writers’ views towards Thai lexical borrowing, and to discuss the extent to which the features as well as the editors and writers’ perspectives reflect Thai English words. It applies textual analysis, semi-structured interview, and an integrated framework of sociolinguistics and World Englishes. The findings show that the six types of lexical borrowing found, namely loanwords, loan blends, loan shifts, loan creation, pronunciation borrowing, and acronyms, as well as the editors and writers’ perceptions provide remarkable linguistic characteristics which mirror an extent of Thai English words in a tourism context. -

As English language learning becomes a hot issue in China, linguists in China are becoming increasingly interested in Chinese-influenced English or Chinglish. Chinglish is an incorrect form of English. The words are ungrammatically strung together, with often inappropriate lexis or literally translated into awkward English. And in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong and Guangxi, the term "Chinglish" refers mainly to Cantonese-influenced English. This paper explores the historical background of Chinglish, the typical features of Chinglish and the reasons of its existence in order to further shed light on its implication on English teaching and learning. 1. Historic Background of Chinglish Definition. Widdowson (2003) maintains that “the very fact that English is an international language means that no nation can have custody over it”. Making a similar claim is Crystal (2003), who argues that “if there is one predictable consequence of a language becoming a global language, it is that nobody owns it any more” and that “everyone who has learned it now owns it … and has the right to use it in the way they want” Crystal,2003:2). Numerous scholars (e.g. Crystal 2003; Widdowson 2003) have argued that English belongs to nonnative speakers because English is widely used as an international language and because there are more nonnative speakers than native speakers. -

PASAA Volume 61 January - June 2021 You Understand I Na Ka?: A Study of Comprehensibility of Thai English to Foreign Tourists Kukiet PHUENGPITIPORNCHAI Prince of Songkla University, Thailand Email: [email protected] Adisa TEO Prince of Songkla University, Thailand Email: [email protected] Abstract The objectives of this study were to explore foreign tourists’ responses to Thai English, a variety of English emerging in Thailand, in terms of comprehensibility, and to identify the linguistic features that made Thai English incomprehensible. One hundred international tourists in Bangkok from four regions including East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America were surveyed after they listened to a set of five authentic speech samples from four speakers in Thai tourism industry. The data were collected and analysed quantitatively and qualitatively to yield multidimensional results. The results show that Thai English was comprehensible to most of the tourists from all four regions. While syntactic and morphological features of Thai English were well understood, the phonological features were a major hurdle for the comprehensibility of Thai English. This study not only proposes pedagogical implications of prioritizing those linguistic features, especially phonological features which mainly impede comprehensibility of Thai English, but also suggests Thais to be more confident in communicating in English for their specific needs and purposes. Speaking Tinglish for Professional Communication: A Reflection of Thai English Used by Tour Guides along the Andaman Sea Pairote Bennui Department of Western Languages Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Thaksin University (TSU), Songkhla Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The local identity of English emerges when non-native speakers express the language different from Standard English. Currently, the term ‘a Thai variety of English’ seems to be marginalized because of the controversial notion of ‘Thai English’. Moreover, many Thais use ‘Tinglish’ or broken English, rather than correct English. However, such ‘rotten English’ is structured for professional communication and implies a range of Thai English. This is evident in the features of spoken English by Thai tour guides in provinces along the Andaman Sea. This study aims to examine Tinglish or the basilectal variety of Thai English used in tourism spoken discourses and the tour guides’ views towards the use of this lectal variety using an integrated framework based on World Englishes by Kachru (1983; 1985; 2005) and the lectal varieties of New Englishes by Platt et al. (1984). It appears that the Thai tour guides demonstrated their unique linguistic features of Tinglish through meaningful and communicative expressions that contribute to a Thai identity of English.
