I, 1867) to be the scientific justification of modern socialism; took part in the foundation of the International Working Men's Association (IWMA, 'First International') in 1864; member of its General Council and corresponding secretary for Germany until 1872; his conflict with Michail Bakunin, focussing on political organization and parliamentary tactics as means, and proletarian state power as a middle range goal of the workers' movement, led to the end of the IWMA and preformulated the strategy of international social democracy eventually dominant until the First World War. Engels, Friedrich: born in Barmen, Prussia 1820, died in London 1895; sent to Manchester in 1842 to complete his commercial training in his father's spinning mill, he became familiar with labour and living conditions of the factory workers and made contact with the Chartist movement; convinced communist, he started lifelong friendship with Marx in 1844, shared the latter's political activities and joined the editorial board of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung in 1848; officer of the revolutionary army in Baden 1849 and forced to flee after its defeat; returned to the firm in Manchester first as a clerk, later as an associate, thus able to secure Marx's life in exile by regular financial support; a member of the IWMA since 1864 and wealthy enough to retire, he joined its General Council in 1870 and, as correspondence secretary for Spain and Italy, played in public the main role in the conflict with Bakunist anarchism; his 'Anti-Dühring' 1878 popularized the results of Marx's studies and defined Marxism as opposed to the competing schools of contemporary socialism; after Marx's death he was the undisputed head of the developing Marxist school in international social democracy and influenced it by a vast and widespread correspondence; until his death he spent most of his time editing the unfinished volumes II (1885)

© 2020 Stefan Dmytro Kosovych NOURISHING THE POLITICAL BODY: BANQUETS IN EARLY THIRD REPUBLIC FRANCE, 1878 – 1914 BY STEFAN DMYTRO KOSOVYCH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Emeritus Mark S. Micale, Chair and Director of Research Associate Professor Tamara Chaplin Professor Maria Todorova Professor Jean-Philippe R. Mathy ABSTRACT The most pressing issues of the day in France and in Europe – the place of workers in society, women’s rights, republicanism versus monarchy as the form of government, and expansion of the French empire – were advanced at banquets, ritualized gatherings over food and drink. Drawing on the key historical success of banquets as a means of political mobilization during the prelude to the Revolution of 1848, socialists/anarchists, royalists, imperialists, and feminists turned to the banquet to strengthen their political agendas during early Third Republic France. In Nourishing the Political Body: Banquets in Early Third Republic France, 1878 – 1914, I argue that banquets became a critical site for the construction of political and cultural power and identity by creating distinctive, tightly-knit communities that bolstered a diverse array of causes across the entire political landscape. Using police reports, government documents, accounts of banquet proceedings, newspaper articles, letters, and memoirs, my dissertation analyzes four prominent genres of banquets during late nineteenth and early twentieth-century France: commemorations of the Paris Commune, royalist, empire, and feminist. At these events, different political groups promoted specific agendas that were always ideological, oftentimes subversive, and even revolutionary.

  • Paul Lafargue Y Laura Marx En España

Abstract This dissertation comprises a comprehensive re-reading of Marx’s understanding of labor. In order to make sense of Marx’s emphasis on labor, I argue, we must take his own productive activity seriously. Doing so obviates many of the standard objections to Marx’s critique of capitalism. It does so by redirecting attention towards Marx’s effort to transform his readers from isolated individuals into a revolutionary laboring multitude. I begin with an examination of “concrete labor”—the intentional production of useful things—which reveals that this is the motor of human history for Marx because our products escape from the intentions that formed them. The materiality of production, Marx shows, confounds the idealism of intentionality. This dynamic is greatly exacerbated by capitalism, to which I turn next. The abstract logic of capitalist production is so divorced from its material effects that it threatens to utterly use up the earth and the workers on which it depends.
