US Fish and Wildlife Service Division of International Conservation Wildlife Without Borders-Great Ape Conservation Fund Project Summary FY 2010

In 2010, the USFWS awarded 58 new grants and cooperative agreements from the Great Ape Conservation Fund totaling $4,541,521.80 which was matched by $5,992,578.80 in leveraged funds. Field projects in seven Asian countries and twelve African countries will be supported.

African Projects

In 2010, the USFWS awarded 33 new grants and cooperative agreements in twelve African countries totaling $3,246,949.80 in USFWS funding which was matched by $3,247,016.80 in leveraged funds.

Cameroon

GA-0629: Capacity Building for Great Apes and Elephant conservation and Natural Resource Management in Mbam and Djerem National Park and its periphery. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This grant will strengthen capacity to protect great apes, elephants, and other wildlife, manage the national park, and achieve the long-term support of local communities who depend on the forests for their survival. GA-0660: The Wildlife Wood Project: Ensuring Responsible Wildlife Management in Timber Production Forests of Cameroon. In partnership with Zoological Society of London. This grant will ensure responsible management of great ape and other wildlife species in timber concessions in Southeast Cameroon. FWS: $51,198.00 Leveraged Funds: $49,896.00

GA-0715: LAGA-MINFOF Collaboration project on Wildlife Law-Enforcement. In partnership with The Last Great Ape Organization (LAGA). This grant will assist the Cameroonian government to increase wildlife law enforcement capacity by identifying large-scale dealers in great ape meat and live great apes; arresting and prosecuting large- scale illegal wildlife exploiters; raising public awareness of wildlife laws and penalties; and serving as a model for action on wildlife law enforcement, NGO-government collaboration, and wildlife crime monitoring. GA-0717: Great ape protection and reduced hunting pressure through participative hunting management and provision of alternative incomes in non-protected forests. In partnership with Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp. This grant will conserve great apes in a non-protected forest area neighboring the Dja biosphere reserve through a community-based participative approach, including the establishment of a sustainable hunt management plan. Côte d’Ivoire

GA-0670: Ensuring conservation of chimpanzees in the Tai National Park, Cote d'Ivoire through high quality capacity building and improved monitoring program. In partnership with Wild Chimpanzee Foundation. This grant will improve the management strategy of Tai National Park with the overall aim of promoting chimpanzee conservation. FWS: $60,451.00 Leveraged Funds: $160,020.00

GA-0671: Capacity building and protection of wild chimpanzees in four high priority protected areas in Cote d'Ivoire and Liberia. In partnership with Wild Chimpanzee Foundation. This grant will strengthen the capacity of Cote d’Ivoire’s forestry agency to undertake biomonitoring and surveillance strategies to protect chimpanzees in the Cavally and Goin-Debe national forests. FWS: $61,322.00 Leveraged Funds: $92,802.00

GA-0672: Conservation of chimpanzees and the tropical rain forest in Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa through a set of awareness activities and a bushmeat survey. In partnership with Wild Chimpanzee Foundation. This grant will fund an education and outreach campaign in local communities surrounding Tai National Park to reduce illegal hunting of wildlife in the park. Democratic Republic of Congo

GA-0647: Bonobo Conservation at Lilungu: Anchoring a Critical Biodiversity corridor in the Maringa-Tshuapa Basins, Democratic Republic of Congo. In partnership with Bonobo Conservation Initiative. This project will identify potential zones for protection within the biodiversity corridor; strengthen community involvement in reserve gazettement; and promote cooperation and support of local, national, and international stakeholders. FWS/USAID: $81,897.00 Leveraged Funds: $45,475.00

GA-0645: The Bonobo Conservation Project: Working Towards Gazettement of the Iyondje Community Bonobo Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In partnership with African Wildlife Foundation. This two year project will gazette the Iyondiji Community Bonobo Reserve; monitor and habituate a select group of bonobos for the purposes of research and tourism; develop a reserve management plan; develop alternative livelihood activities for local communities; and control the expansion of slash and burn agriculture inside of the reserve. GA-0663: Protecting and safeguarding the largest known population of eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthi) in the Ituri Landscape. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This grant will support work to conserve the largest known population of eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthi) in Africa. FWS:/USAID $142,003.00 Leveraged Funds: $67,160.00

GA-0690: Support for the Management of Maiko National Park and the Protection of its Grauer’s Gorilla Population, DRC. In partnership with Frankfurt Zoological Society. This grant will significantly enhance the management and protection of Maiko National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo through wildlife management training, new equipment, and a revised operational plan. FWS/USAID: $99,539.00 Leveraged Funds: $303,243.00

GA-0676: Biological Inventory and Survey of Bonobos within the Lukenie-Sankuru- Lusambo Forest Block, Democratic Republic of Congo. In partnership with Lukuru Wildlife Research Project. This grant will identify areas of high conservation value through field surveys that will determine bonobo abundance, distribution, and existing threats to bonobos survival. GA-0684 Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve: Bonobo Surveys and Monitoring in Kokolopori, Maringa-Wamba-Lopori Landscape in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In partnership with Bonobo Conservation Initiative. This grant will engage local communities in and around the Reserve Naturelle de Bonobo de Kokolopori through information exchange, participatory mapping, field surveys, and threat identification to increase protection of bonobos. GA-0689 Using Digital Media as a Mobile Education Tool in Salonga-Lukenie-Sankuru Landscape in Democratic Republic of Congo. In partnership with International Conservation and Education Fund. This grant will fund the creation and dissemination of videos and radio pieces on a village-by-village basis to decrease hunting pressure on bonobos and other wildlife in the region. GA-0702: Protection, monitoring and habituation of Tongo's chimpanzee population, Virunga National Park, DRC. In partnership with Frankfurt Zoological Society. This grant will increase protection of the chimpanzee population in and around the Tongo Forest through monitoring and tourism development. FWS/USAID: $50,501.00 Leveraged Funds: $47,751.00

GA-0723: Protecting Virunga National Park's Mountain Gorillas Using Aerial Surveillance. In partnership with Africa Conservation Fund. This grant will improve the capacity of Virunga National Park through increased aerial surveillance. Enhanced surveillance capabilities will enable rangers to deploy quickly to combat illegal charcoal production, poaching, and farming. FWS/USAID: $45,000.00 Leveraged Funds: $112,950.00

GA-0729: Capacity Increase: Virunga Biomass Briquette Project — Protecting Mountain Gorilla Habitat in Virunga National Park. In partnership with Africa Conservation Fund. This grant will halt the destruction of mountain gorilla habitat caused by charcoal production through the introduction of an environmentally sustainable alternative fuel. FWS: $45,500.00 Leveraged Funds: $31,430.00

GA-0706: "Ekolo ya bonobo" - Bonobo Reintroduction in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In partnership with Les Amis des Bonobos du Congo. This project will reintroduce a second group of Bonobos from Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary to a community reserve and ensure their continued protection in the wild. FWS: $100,000.00 Leveraged Funds: $305,815.00

Equatorial Guinea

GA-0681: Working with local communities to evaluate, test and implement potential bushmeat alternatives in Equatorial Guinea. In partnership with Zoological Society of London. This grant will support the government of Equatorial Guinea to prohibit the illegal hunting, sale and consumption of apes by working with local communities to develop culturally and economically feasible protein and income alternatives. FWS/USAID: $50,000.00 Leveraged Funds: $77,085.00

Gabon

GA-0719: Protection of ape populations, through monitoring and tourism at important bai sites. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This grant will increase the security of great ape and other wildlife populations in Gabon at Langoué, CEB, and Mwagne baï sites through increased surveillance, enhanced monitoring, and facilitation of eco-tourism. FWS/USAID: $298,361.00 Leveraged Funds: $78,062.00

GA-0720: Improving the effectiveness of anti-poaching in great ape priority areas in Gabon's national parks through improved capacity to monitor law enforcement efforts. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This grant will increase national capacity for law enforcement in Gabon to improve protection of great apes and other wildlife in four national parks: Southern Ivindo, Loango, Lope, and Plateau Batake. Guinea Bissau

GA-0678: Applied Landscape Genetics to Chimpanzee Conservation in Guinea Bissau. In partnership with Cardiff University. The grantee will work closely with Guinean counterparts to use genetic tools to determine ‘demographic management units,’ which will correspond to real chimpanzee conservation needs in Guinea-Bissau. The grantee will integrate the resulting genetic management plan into a national action plan for chimpanzees. FWS: $39,285.90 Leveraged Funds: $27,826.70

Republic of Congo

GA-0653: Great ape research for better protection in Conkouati-Douli National Park. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This grant will fund a survey and monitoring of ape populations in Conkouati-Douli National Park (CNDP); enhance the protection of the at-risk great ape populations in northern CNDP; and build local capacity to conserve apes in the Republic of the Congo. FWS/USAID: $108,940.00 Leveraged Funds: $43,633.00

GA-0685: PALF (Projet d'Appui a l'Application de la Loi sur la Faune/ Project for the Application of the Law for Fauna). In partnership with The Aspinall Foundation. This grant will support the Republic of Congo to identify and prosecute large-scale dealers in great ape meat, live great apes, and other illegal wildlife products and raise public awareness of wildlife laws. FWS: $62,598.00 Leveraged Funds: $54,460.00

GA-0688: Great Apes Public Awareness Project (GAPAP): Using Video Centered Outreach Education. In partnership with International Conservation and Education Fund. This grant will help to conserve great ape populations in the Northern Republic of Congo by raising rural communities’ conservation awareness,using a participatory approach involving screenings and dissemination of video specifically produced to reduce illegal bushmeat hunting, ritual wildlife killings, habitat destruction, and disease transmission. FWS/USAID: $75,185.00 Leveraged Funds: $105,572.70

GA-0713: Ebola Surveillance and Response Measures for Great Apes in Northern Republic of Congo. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This grant will strengthen capacity to conduct Ebola surveillance activities for the protection of great apes and people; improve understanding of the transmission of the Ebola virus; and develop control measures to contain the spread of future outbreaks. Senegal

GA-0677: Chimpanzee Conservation in Light of Impending Mining Projects in Southeastern Senegal. In partnership with Iowa State University. This grant will fund research to assess the status of chimpanzee communities in Karakaene and Koudekourou, Senegal to mitigate future iron-ore mining planned by the ArcelorMittal company. FWS: $17,861.00 Leveraged Funds: $11,102.00

Uganda

GA-0616: Conserving Chimpanzees by Integrating Cultural Values and Conservation Practices in the Albertine Rift. In partnership with Fauna and Flora International. This two year project will conserve the chimpanzee populations in Rwenzori Mountains National Park through strengthening the capacity of local cultural institutions and UWA to manage the integration of local cultural values into park management. FWS: 107,479.00 Leveraged Funds: $112,336.00

Cameroon / Nigeria (Cross River Gorilla)

GA-0699: My Gorilla - My Community. In partnership with PCI Media Impact This grant will develop the communication capacity of NGO partners seeking to conserve the Cross River Gorilla in Nigeria and Cameroon and implement an awareness program targeting local communities, using contemporary communication methods such as radio theatre and community action campaigns. FWS: $99,800.00 Leveraged Funds: $69,586.80

GA-0757: A landscape approach to conservation of the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This cooperative agreement willensure the survival of the Cross River gorilla by 2020 through support to a network of core protected areas and corridors across the Afi Kagwene landscape, managed in collaboration between local communities and government. FWS: $250,000.00 Leveraged Funds: $109,376.00

Regional

GA-0695: Supporting and Strengthening Great Ape Conservation Through the Section on Great Apes. In partnership with Conservation International Foundation. This grant will provide core support to develop best practices guidelines, strengthening communication and collaboration to benefit bonobo conservation, and facilitate great ape strategy workshops and action plans. FWS: $47,473.00 Leveraged Funds: $53,925.00

GA-0686: Central African Wildlife Trade Law Enforcement Initiative. In partnership with World Wide Fund for Nature – International. This grant will support Central African governments to design, adopt, and implement a wildlife trade law enforcement plan for the Congo Basin. FWS/USAID: $86,625.00 Leveraged Funds: $150,331.00

GA-0716: Wildlife Law Enforcement in Central Africa - Model Replication and Regional Enforcement. In partnership with The Last Great Ape Organization (LAGA). This grant will replicate the successful model of collaborative wildlife law enforcement in Cameroon to 4 other central African countries: Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Gabon, and Nigeria. Asian Projects

In 2010, the USFWS awarded 25 new grants for field projects in 9 Asian countries totaling $1,294,572.00 in USFWS funding which was matched by $2,745,562.00 in leveraged funds.

Burma

GA-0632: Hoolock gibbon conservation status review in Burma, Phase II. In partnership with People Resources and Conservation Foundation. This project will strengthen the capacity of in-country conservationists to plan and conduct surveys of gibbons and other primates, monitor species status and define concise conservation needs and measures through training and experience in assessment of gibbons in two additional forest blocks of Burma’s : and Mount Loi Sang. FWS: $49,951.00 Leveraged Funds: $21,730.00

Cambodia

GA-0633: Improved conservation and monitoring of the yellow-cheeked crested gibbon in Southern Mondulkiri, Cambodia. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This project will provide refresher training to Seima Biodiversity Conservation Area staff in wildlife assessment, forest protection, and science-based management of patrols. The grant will also provide support for operation of two patrol teams within the conservation area. FWS: $52,295.00 Leveraged Funds: $52,275.00

GA-0667: The Samkos Gibbon Protection Project, Cambodia. In partnership with Fauna and Flora International. This project will train and equip the staff of Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary so they can protect gibbons and their habitat in the sanctuary. The grantee will also conduct a program of regular meetings to ensure local people are aware of the legal status of gibbons and the sanctuary, and establish a long-term monitoring program of standardized transects and occupancy surveys to monitor gibbons in the sanctuary. FWS: $53,268.00 Leveraged Funds: $190,578.00

GA-0743: Kouprey Express: Pileated gibbon conservation education campaign in Cambodia. In partnership with Wildlife Alliance. This project will raise community awareness among a minimum of 35,000 rural Cambodians living in and around the protected areas of the Cardmom Mountains regarding the primary threats facing the pileated gibbon: deforestation and forest degradation and fragmentation. FWS: $18,277.00 Leveraged funds: $168,740.00

GA-0748: Northern Plains Pileated Gibbon Conservation Project: Phase 2, Cambodia. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This project will strengthen protection of the pileated gibbon by training patrol staff in law enforcement techniques and MIST data collection, improving communications at sub-stations, supplying basic equipment, monitoring gibbons in the most important sites, and ensuring effective protection by patrols. FWS: $55,002.00 Leveraged funds: $55,703.00

GA-0756: Long-term conservation of a priority gibbon population in Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia. In partnership with the Conservation International Foundation. This grant will support a long-term socio-ecological and demographic study of a highly significant gibbon site in Veun Sai District and initiate the establishment of a pilot ecotourism project. FWS: $48,937.00 Leveraged funds: $9,497.00

China

GA-0668: Conservation of the hoolock gibbon in China. In partnership with Fauna and Flora International. This grantee will carry out a hoolock gibbon conservation status review and action planning workshop, conduct gibbon surveys, provide training relevant to gibbon conservation for the Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve (GNNR) staff, and support research on the impact of habitat fragmentation on the gibbons. A large portion of China’s hoolock gibbons are found in GNNR. FWS: $54,615.00 Leveraged funds: $20,614.00

India

GA-0557: Forest Department-Community partnership to improve protection of western hoolock gibbons in Jeypore Reserve Forest, India. In partnership with Wildlife Areas Development and Welfare Trust. This project will improve the protection efforts for gibbons and other wildlife species in Jeypore Reserve Forest by establishing, training and equipping two joint Forest Department-community patrol teams and equipping the range office with the hardware and software necessary to maintain a patrol database. FWS: $16,798.00 Leveraged Funds: $1,540.00

Indonesia

GA-0654: Strengthening habitat protection at Gunung Palung National Park through aerial patrolling, reforestation and outreach, Indonesia. In partnership with Health and Harmony. This project will strengthen habitat management in and around the park through use of a micro-light airplane, reforestation of orangutan habitat, and creation of a “Nature Lovers” outreach organization. FWS: $74,966.00 Leveraged Funds: $72,522.00

GA-0666: Mentawai Islands Gibbon Conservation Program, Indonesia. In partnership with Fauna and Flora International. This project will assess threats to remaining populations and habitats of Kloss’ gibbon, develop a gibbon conservation action plan, raise gibbon conservation awareness among relevant stakeholders, and build capacity of Siberut National Park staff and local civil society organizations in gibbon conservation. FWS: $62,376.00 Leveraged funds: $23,000.00

GA-0693: Human wildlife conflict monitoring and mitigation, Indonesia. In partnership with Yayasan Orangutan Sumatera Lestari – Orangutan Information Center. This grant will facilitate the establishment of a Human Orangutan Conflict Response Unit which will investigate, enumerate, and mitigate conflict incidents in agricultural areas prone to crop-raiding by orangutans. FWS: $36,407.00 Leveraged funds: $42,448.00

GA-0696: Reintroduction of orangutans into Murung Raya Regency, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. In partnership with Yayasan Penyelematan Orangtutan Borneo (BOS Foundation). This project will prepare an orangutan release and health strategy, identify precise release sites, prepare sites for orangutan reintroduction, reintroduce orangutans into natural habitat, initiate monitoring of orangutans post-release, and socialize the reintroduction project with local stakeholders. FWS: $60,905.00 Leveraged Funds: $381,342.00

GA-0734: Using health care incentives including an eco-friendly hospital to protect Gunung Palung National Park and its wild orangutans. In partnership with Health and Harmony. This grant will provide partial support for construction of a waiting/conservation education room for a new hospital. A full-time conservation educator will teach patients and their families about the importance of protecting the national park in this space. FWS: $75,000.00 Leveraged funds: $1,115,000.00

GA-0735: Mobile education and conservation unit program for orangutan survival, Indonesia. In partnership with Orang Utan Republik Foundation, Inc. This grant will provide a vehicle and education supplies, and be used to support a targeted orangutan conservation education program for remote villages in the Gunung Leuser Ecosystem experiencing human-ape conflict. FWS: $34,896.00 Leveraged funds: $36,600.00

GA-0741: Saving the remaining orangutan population and their habitat within and surrounding the Danau Sentarum National Park, Indonesia. In partnership with the Center for International Forestry Research. This project will update information on the conservation status of the orangutan; conduct community/government awareness programs on reduction of forest conversion; and develop a conservation plan, collaborative monitoring system and a participatory land-use plan for the national park area. GA-0755: Conserving orangutans in Gunung Palung National Park through environmental education and increased legal protection, Indonesia. In partnership with Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program, Inc. This project will assist communities on the fringe of the park in building legal protections for their community forests, it will support local communities in developing sustainable management of their natural resources, and will continue an on-going environmental education program with an increased emphasis on the communities key to orangutan conservation. Lao PDR

GA-0558: Continued gibbon conservation through coordinated protection in the Annamite Range Moist Forest Ecoregion of Lao PDR. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This project will strengthen conservation of globally significant gibbon populations in the Nam Kading National Protected Area by engaging, strengthening and coordinating with the newly established Forest Inspection Unit and by increasing current protection measures already in place within the area. FWS: $51,207.00 Leveraged funds: $63,803.00

GA-0635: Feasibility assessment for a REDD demonstration activity to support gibbon conservation in the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area (NPA). In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This grantee will undertake activities necessary to establish long-term financing from REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) including a feasibility assessment, a spatial analysis of deforestation and degradation, and an assessment of the appropriate carbon accounting methodology for use in Laos. GA-0639: Status and conservation of white-cheeked crested gibbons in the Northern Annamites, Lao PDR. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This project will develop an abundance index estimate for gibbons in the Phou Chom Voy Provincial Protected Area, establish which gibbon taxon is present, and build capacity in the Area to undertake field research on gibbons. Malaysia

GA-0634 Conservation of Bornean orangutans through community engagement in Batang Ai National Park and Lanjak-Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, Sarawak, Malaysia. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. The grantee will present an orangutan conservation radio program in the Iban language, broadcast it on a regular basis through Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), and develop, pilot test and implement appropriate methodologies for evaluating the impact of the radio program. GA-0679 The Kinabatangan Conservation Corridor Project: Designing living landscapes for endangered apes in Sabah, Malaysia. In partnership with Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology. This project will identify priority areas that maintain connectivity and ensure long-term conservation of the Kinabatangan Ecosystem’s biodiversity, with particular emphasis on the endangered Bornean orangutan and Muller’s Bornean gibbon. FWS: $43,521.00 Leveraged funds: $13,780.00

GA-0752 Orangutan nest count surveys at the proposed extension areas of Lanjak- Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary and Batang Ai National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia. In partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society. This grant will assess orangutan abundance at five important areas outside but adjacent to the boundaries of the protected areas and work with the government to have these areas included within the boundary of the parks. Thailand

GA-0750 Growing the future for people and wildlife – sustainable livelihoods for ex- poachers in . In partnership with Freeland Foundation. This grant will establish a fully sustainable organic farming alternative livelihoods program for communities living near the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex with a history of poaching. Development of this model will benefit gibbons, tigers and elephants in the vicinity of this forest complex. FWS: $54,410.00 Leveraged funds: $34,363.00

Vietnam

GA-0658 Transboundary planning for habitat restoration for the Cao Vit Gibbon, Vietnam. In partnership with Fauna and Flora International. This grant will establish an international working group which will plan implementation of habitat restoration for the Cao Vit gibbon in China and Vietnam. FWS: $55,782.00 Leveraged funds: $16,417.00

GA-0675 Prioritizing sites for yellow-cheeked gibbon conservation in Vietnam’s Southern Annamites through increased capacity of local Forest Protection Department staff. In partnership with the WWF Greater Mekong – Vietnam Program. This project will increase ranger capacity to undertake surveys by providing training and support for conduct of gibbon and local community surveys; facilitate the identification of priority sites; conduct awareness raising programs; establish a gibbon monitoring system; support wildlife law enforcement in protection of gibbons and their habitat; and conduct a multi- stakeholder workshop to incorporate results into provincial conservation planning in the greater Lam Dong Province area.
