A TRIBUTE TO CASALS

Thank God for the Maestro. In an age of alienation he stands for affirmation. At a time when materialism seems ascendant he reminds us that the human spirit must always be transcendent. In an era when many feel that the individual counts for nothing, he demonstrates- in his life, in his music, in his everlasting search for perfection of communication- that the individual counts for everything. He shows that the greatest human values cannot exist as dead abstractions but must be given life through the everyday actions of people.

For seventy years he has been known throughout the world as a cellist without peer.. For almost that long he has been an extraordinary conductor. It is hard to realize how long has been Casals' career as a musical artist. It began before most of us were born, before the turn of the century. When Casals was in his twenties he was asked to the to play for President . Nearly sixty years later he played again at the White House, at the request of President Kennedy. Tonight, in his nineties, he has performed for us. And he is still going strong.

The glorious sound called forth by the Maestro, and those who work with him, refreshes tired spirits and restores tattered faiths. The example of his life- and of his works - gives us strength and courage to continue ours.

Don Pablo, we salute you.

- Arthur J. Goldberg, Ambassador )(

I A TRIBUTE TO ALA VEDRA

Thank God for Joan Alavedra . Were it not for him there would be no El Pessebre. He wrote the poem during a period·of exile to tell his young daughter the meaning of Christmas. Ala vedra and Casals shared a home for ten years in French , across the Pyrenees from their Spanish homeland. El Pessebre, set to the music of Pablo Casals, has become one of man's most poignant pleas for peace.

The oratorio by the two Catalan artists was begun in France, completed in Puerto Rico, and first performed in Mexico. It was conceived in exile, finished on an island haven, and first heard in a country whose doors had long been open to refugees from oppress10n.

Joan Alavedra is one of the distinguished men of belles lethes, writing in both Catalan and Castilian. He is a poet, biographer, and journalist who also served as secretary to the two republican presidents of his native country.

Alavedra- born in Barcelona in 1896- has lived much of his life in times of strife not only in his beloved country but also throughout the world. As a journalist he has recorded this strife; as a man he has endured it. Yet outside he is best known for the simple and lovely words that have been sung tonight with such eloquence for "the peace we all desire and wait for."
